Sad to hear the manatee calf passed away.

It's amazing to see them in the wild. While snorkeling at King's Springs in Crystal River, the 12-year-old daughter of my girlfriend's brother attracted the attention of a baby manatee. Guess the little guy thought she, dressed in a wet suit, was a baby manatee too and wanted to play.

/Good times.

It was stable in the inlet...they took it out...it died. They killed it. Should have left it alone

Yeah...no. More than likely there were health reasons why the calf was abandoned. Would have died in either instance, but you don't know until you try.

Years ago while in Fla, we had some manatee come up to the boat and rub on our feet - awesome! They are such cool creatures.
Florida should have a law requiring boat motors to be covered so they don't cut them.

We snorkeled there in January. Manatees everywhere! I even made a new little friend!

Years ago I was swimming with my niece and nephew in Naples. We were one of maybe 20 people on the beach that day when three manatees came swimming by. We swam out, but kept our distance as not to scare them away. They came close enough for us to touch them and stuck around for about 5 minutes or so. It was an absolutely amazing experience. When I got back to my sister's house we told her about it and she was very jealous.

She's lived there 15 yrs now and has yet to get as close to a manatee as we did that day. I honestly thought it was a common thing to happen on the beaches.

I remember reading somewhere that manatees are so slow to reproduce that some zoologists suspect they may have never been plentiful.

"Oh, the new manatee" was too hard to work out? :)
