When I was getting a B.S. in Criminal Justice we were taught that pepper spray was something used to non-lethally slow an attacker, not something to dole out as punishment without benefit of a trail to people you're about to arrest.

Um, it's not a punishment, nor does the justice system usually have trails in the street. They were told to move..they were blocking access, and they sat there and took it to make a political point. Pepper spray is a tool used to gain compliance, when one is ordered to disperse / move aside, by a lawful officer, and you don't comply? Guess what? You're getting a facefull of pepper spray, if not tazed.

Although i sympathize with what these people are trying to accomplish, don't expect me to feel sorry for you for getting pwned by pepper spray when you shove your ass in a cops face after he gives you a order, nor expect me to hate on the cop who was just following procedure. He gave you a lawful order to move, because you blocked the walk, and you refused to comply. Go cry on another shoulder. You wanted attention, and you got it. Congratulations and enjoy the spray.

Hippie Cookin' by Lt. John Pike.

Most people don't like a lot of pepper spray on their protestors. They may think it overpowers the taste. Not me. I know that by liberally, uh sorry about that word, applying pepper spray to protesters, the flavor will work it's way to the bone. Usually, by booking, most of the spray is gone. But when I apply it, I know, it will last.

Because you never know when a conservative judge will just tell us what we've been waiting to hear. "Take these hippies out and feed them to the masses and cops get the prime cuts." When that verdict is handed down, I know my arrestees will be ready to grill.

Tune in next week when I show you how you can get a decent sandwich meat off an 85 pound conscientious objector. You know, if a judge sentences them to be rendered for their meat.

Yea, HA HA and all, but guess what? After Thanksgiving, when everyone's forgotten about this and moved on to the next meme-of-the-day, Officer Pepper will be brought back from his nice paid administrative leave, everyone involved from the University administration down to the foot soldiers will be able to keep their $100,000+ a year jobs (except for the students, who likely are unable to get jobs in our economy), and we'll all forget about how outraged we were back in November. It's pretty sad.

Someone maybe seeing someone else possibly showering with kids: Firings, hearings, Grand Jury, guaranteed long drawn-out investigation.

A police officer casually walking up and illegally deploying pepper spray onto peaceful, sitting students: Spin, defend, and stonewall until everyone forgets, and life goes on as usual.

What's sad is many cops, including one who used to write "use of force" policies for his own dept. say this cop did nothing wrong, and that it was okay to pepper spray these demonstrators because the cops might injure them picking them up. Spoken Like a man who has never been pepper sprayed.

I have, only once, and it is NOT a fun feeling. I was trying to save a cop's life as I saw one of guys in the fight he was breaking up get behind him a try to draw the officer's gun-so I lept over a counter (this was in domestic relations court, where a custody hearing turned into a two-family brawl) and tackled the grabby guy-just as cops partner got panicky and sprayed everyone nearby (including the other cop). We had to evacuate the entire floor of the courthouse as that stuff began to spread out.

Pain compliance against passive resistance is punishment.

At some point non-lethal weapons became less of a "I feel in danger, but not for my life" tool and more of a "Respect mah authoritah!" tool for forcing compliance. Its sickening.

get over it. There is a way to protest without forcing the police to take action. They chose to disobey and paid for it.

if the cop had a right to arrest them, then he should have done it... until that point, you have absolutely no idea if they would have been compliant while being placed under arrest or not. you can't just pepper spray random people who are quietly sitting on the ground.

The appropriate response to a failure to comply with a police order is to arrest the individual, not to initiate force.

So the officers' desire to "gain compliance" was more important than the right to peacefully assemble?

Seriously, in your messed up head, is there anything in the world more important to you than obeying the police?

Their assembly wasn't peaceable.

Once you start blocking paths you cross that line. the cop had a right to tellt hem to move, and the right to arrest them if they refused, didn't have the right to start in with pepper spray against people sitting there.
