I suppose that's how the nano-bot swarms of the Singularity will look to us... before we're disassembled...

It kind of reminded me of a BIE thread.

Not CGI. Flocking starlings are an incredible sight. [YouTube Link]

Mr. Potatoass: Boids ^

Boids! I loved those little guys. When I did my Comp Sci degree I had the privilege of taking a few courses by someone who had worked with Craig Reynolds on boids and the Breaking the Ice film. Neat stuff; simple concepts, but crazy hard to do right and efficiently.

Did anyone ever figure out how boids-like behaviour works in nature (birds, fish, etc), or otherwise "solve" the boids problem? At the time I learned about boids it was thought that there was some super simple optimal algorithm birds used that would be (relatively) computationally simple, but that we just didn't understand it yet.

I wish they'd made the video without the music. It'd have been cool to hear the rush of all those birds. Very cool clip though!!

Headline should have read:

To the left, a mumuration of starlings. To the right, a whineation of farkers

Cool video, but could've done without the idiotic mugging at the camera at the beginning.
