Less cool w/o any ability to zoom in.

Heh, there are some counties in WV and KY that have no net movement outside of the few surrounding counties.

skinnycatullus: Heh, there are some counties in WV and KY that have no net movement outside of the few surrounding counties.

My wife's family is from one of those counties in southwest VA. She's one of the very few people from her high school that managed to get the escape velocity needed to move far away.

Since I moved to my location, no one has moved in or out

hmm, its actually surprisingly even for my area. Not exact, and currently we have more moving away than staying, but not much more.

Dead for Tax Reasons: Since I moved to my location, no one has moved in or out

Perhaps your neighbors are dead for tax reasons.

/data from the IRS.

I'm just north of NOLA... we've had a slight, but constant increase for the duration of that map.

What's up with all the activity in San Bernardino County (San Bernardino), Calif?

Cuchulane: What's up with all the activity in San Bernardino County (San Bernardino), Calif?

Lots of people there and they were hit extremely hard by the housing collapse.

Fascinating. Any map of migration in and out of the US?

2011-11-21 02:38:56 AM
Map is legit. It's interesting to click on the counties with Army bases, like Pulaski County, MO, Pierce County, WA; El Paso County CO; Richmond County, GA, just to name a few.

One thing that depressed me was the income levels in counties with large cities.
Most single income levels were under $30K.

I noticed in the county I live in there was an increase in population until 2009 when things stabled off and those leaving and coming were about equal. The housing collapse has all but stopped the developers for now.

Geez, Detroit (Wayne Co, near the base of the "thumb"). Why did I even look.

Pretty cool, subby.

Fun how you can tell the military counties, as they tend to have long migrations to the same places. Check out places like Jefferson County, NY, Fairbanks/North Star Borough, AK, Onslow County, NC.

I've been clicking around for a while now, and every major city I've clicked on has had a LOT more inbound than outbound.

You can't explain that.

People are moving TO Spokane? What kind of sick person does that?

STAY AWAY! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

Los Angeles County has a greater 'outbound' value for all five years.

/just sayin'

That makes sense for major cities.. people tend to move into metropolitan areas. Kinda been happenin for the past century or so..

The map doesn't seem to account for non-U.S. immigration. But yeah, please leave, there's too many people here.

Duuuuuuuude, King CO., Washington is like this gigantic blue-hole of lines...

Seems like a lot of the counties I clicked on showed increases in population, but had larger outflows vs inflows. Miami Dade, in particular, showed a 5% increase in population with an outflow of almost double the inflow over 5 years.

Try Philadelphia.

As I already knew, nobody moves here. 10.5 percent unemployment will do that for ya.

I was the line that went to Vegas. Ran into a lot of displaced NOLA folks there.

I knew we had net growth. I was unfortunate enough to be in staffing and got to deal with the masses who moved here convinced the job market was just excellent here.

It wasn't.

Birth rates, I assume.

It's interesting to click on LA/Orange/San Bernardino counties and see that it's true - southern Californians really are fanning out across the western US like plague rats fleeing a town of desiccated corpses.

Interestingly, outbound migration from Orange County (Orlando), Florida, is heaviest to several surrounding counties, and then to LA County, Orange County (CA), and San Diego County. Maybe it's all of those boy-band hopefuls moving to SoCal to get their big break in showbiz.

Custer County, Nebraska shows no inbound or outbound migration on the map at all. There are some stats in the bar charts, but nothing at all on the map.

This map would be a lot more fun if you could look at it by income range.

This map would be even more fun if you could look at it by income. I'd like to see whether the rich are really leaving high tax states or not. Seems as though the IRS (or Forbes) could have made that available if they chose.

2011-11-21 09:21:32 AM
Hmmm, More outbound than inbound for Montgomery Co. MD until 2009 (with the administration change). Can't wait for the conservative outrage about "fat cat government bums" on that one.

More likely: outrageous housing prices drove many young people and families out, now some are moving in as the prices are settling (still high, but not mind-boggling anymore in the outer suburbs).

Miami is like LA in this regard. Don't really need to say why

In a shocking turn of events, (white) people in Gwinnett county are moving north and east of the county (up 85, farther from Atlanta). At the same time, there is a heavy pattern of movement TO the county from southern California and Florida.

Oddly enough, there is a high pocket of movement from Gwinnett county to south east Texas.

sgtbarthel: Map is legit. It's interesting to click on the counties with Army bases, like Pulaski County, MO, Pierce County, WA; El Paso County CO; Richmond County, GA, just to name a few.

Thank you for pointing this out. I've had exactly half a cup of coffee and was boggled when I clicked on my own county (New London CO CT) and was baffled at all the movement. With the sub base and what not it made much more sense.

Stop coming to Texas damnit. Stay where you are. Don't come here. It sucks here. You love the rust belt, remember? There's no jobs here. Rick Perry will eat your children.

I think it's largely the propaganda. But the propaganda isn't unfounded- Pittsburgh is a really nice town.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: It sucks here.

You need to post this in Spanish on elfarko.mx. Yankees don't want to move to North Mexico.

My area has a greater percentage of incoming vs outgoing. The problem is the majority of immigrants are poor; one county had a per capita income of -100. On the other side, the people leaving the area are mostly young college grads that actually might have a future. This is a know problem here in Wisconsin. We have great colleges, but the graduates don't stay here. We also have great welfare benefits, so we have a larger number of people moving into the area that need benefits. It's an unsustainable trend, but the best study to date that pointed out this problem was attacked as "racist". The study, and the study members were picked by Governor Doyle (D). They didn't mention race, but just just looked at the economics of a situation when taxpayers were leaving, and new residents demanding services were moving in.

...and people are consistently leaving King County. Kinda makes a mess of the stereotype don't it?

I see a lot of the effects of real estate bubble. A lot of urban property was overvalued, and with no job growth during the bubble a lot of people moved out of the cities. Some moved to get away from inflation, others because they couldn't afford to live there anymore. That gap has narrowed significantly or reversed in the last year. Exceptions are areas where regional issues overwhelm national ones, such as SoCal and Detroit.

P.S. Egads why the fark did they have to make it red vs. blue. As if the media hasn't raped that color scheme enough.
