Forty below is the same on Centigrade and Fahrenheit scales.

And it's brass monkey weather.

Global Warming is so last year. The new term is "Global Climate Bullshiat Disruption" and if you disagree you are a flat earth denier and probably a Republican racist too.

Some damn fine writing there.
"broke the old record of 39 below set in 1969"
then "The last time Fairbanks residents saw 40-below temperatures in November was in 1994"

So the 40-below temps in 1994 were fake 40s? or did they get disqualified for cheating?

What do Juneau? When the cold sink Inuit really tests your resolve. The Canadians will have Nunavut.

The only solution is to stop eating, driving, and heating and cooling our homes, then the weather in Alaska will improve.

/It's November in Alaska. derp.

I wouldn't even leave the house if it was that cold.

That was in the last ice age.

Nine degrees above freezing is a November record low in Alaska?

Nome way!

2011-11-20 02:13:17 PM
After seeing the survivorman ep in Alaska again last week I thought 'Damn, I wanna move to Alaska'.

Thanks for reminding why I won't.

I'm fine with cold as I live in Ohio, but -40 cold is way too damn cold. I can live with 20F and 30F above. -40... no.

I spent a winter in Fairbanks, and I learned that somewhere around 20 below it stopped mattering much.

Ed_Severson: Nine degrees above freezing is a November record low in Alaska?

Yes, that's a little confusing. But people were ill-prepared, apparently, which means some of them went out in a thin sweater instead of a slightly more robust one.

==============================================================

The record of 39 below was the record set on that particular day.

However, other days in November have gotten to 40 below in previous years, such as 1994. Probably days later in the month :)

Reasons why they have to pay people to live there. Only Canadians are crazy enough to live in that kind of weather voluntarily. I was in Calgary once when it was in the 40 below range and that is monkey fark retarded cold. You can't even walk to a mailbox without getting frostbite practically.

2011-11-20 02:16:58 PM

If I had to guess I'd say that "broke the old record of 39 below set in 1969" refers to the record low for that calendar day, not all-time. Poorly explained in the article, but I think that's the thrust of it.

I'm assuming that this was an "on this date" record, and that the 1994 temp was on a different date in Nov., and that the writer didn't explain that because his/her brain is frozen.

Let's look at the whole world over a whole month.

icons.wxug.com

October 2011 was the globe's 8th warmest October on record, according to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies also rated October the 8th warmest on record. The top ten warmest Octobers since record keeping began in 1871 have all occurred since 1997. October 2011 global land temperatures were the 2nd warmest on record, and ocean temperatures were the 11th warmest on record.

It's a normal "40" outside right now, and I'm not terribly keen about the prospect of having to go out in it. Minus 40? I don't think I'd be able to stop laughing long enough to tell you to fark off. Summers in the triple digits don't bother me that bad, but I get a tad pissy once it gets below 60 outside. You can keep your snow and ice, and I'll keep my warm springs and summers where I can lounge in the sunshine in a cute swimsuit while sipping margaritas.

MyNameIsMofuga: And my daughter would still insist on wearing flip flops because she isn't cold.

Well, when her toes fall off, she won't be able to wear flip-flops anymore, so you'll win in the long run. :P

It could be 101 (F) and my ass will be below freezing as soon as I get in the bed.
At least... that's what I've been told anyway.

Huh, I'm in Fairbanks and my outside temp reads -26f. Though to be fair, it did read -34 earlier in the week. You know what I really hate? farking ice fog. Its fog...but its ice. In my particular corner its mostly frozen car exhaust. The shiat covers your lungs. Blech.

A hundred years of "data", which I'm sure is completely reliable, little over 10yrs of which have been "warmer" (although not noticeably to the average person). Gonna use that to prove an inarguable truth about the weather system of a 4 billion + year old planet that humans have only been around for a small fraction of a time on.

Yep, that'll learn 'em!

/I'm sure they won't remember a couple decades ago that we swore we were ushering in a new ice age because of things we put in the atmosphere.

I was in Grand Forks, N.D., a few years ago when the high was -45. I think the low was -59. So cold your body doesn't comprehend. As in, step outside and think sure it's cold, but what's the big deal? Then, about 15 seconds later when your core temp has dropped to hypothermia levels and you're shaking so much it's hard to see, you realize you're in a fight for your life even though the door is three feet away. Barely making it back to safety, next time you promise to wear two parkas.

I don't care who you are, or where you are from, minus 40 is cold cold.

At least it's Fairbanks, where they are used to that sort of stuff, not like it went to minus forty in Miami or Dallas.

Everyone has a block heater on their engine and we plug 'em in at night or if we're in a store for more than an hour or so.

Can someone post the "it doesn't work that way" comic strip?

But seriously, I think that the people who believe in global warming see it as being much worse than it is, and the non-believers don't recognize the fact that the crap we are putting into the atmosphere does indeed have a negative affect on the planet and us. Maybe the truth is somewhere between the two extremes. However, I have not researched the subject, so I may be talking out of my ass.

/effect, not affect
//annoying, isn't it? :)
