I may have had a little buzz going when my girlfriend said something last night, but I thought she said, "Oh my god, people are still putting feathers in their hair?" It was in response to some garbage on TV, but I didn't think much of it until I saw the jist of this story.

Stupid coonts. Feathers-as-a-fashion-accessory is creating a shortage for flyfishermen. The local tackle shop is sending their best stuff to California because they get more money from hairdressers than from humble fly tyers.

That whole "rebellious" thing... I don't think it means what you think it means.

Without freaking out your parents? Hello? Missing the point?

Ok, I really think this has gone on long enough. It's called a farking roach clip, and you got it at the fair, if you didn't have enough tickets for one of those stretched out 7-Up bottles full of neon pink & blue sand.

Hi mom and dad.
The Eagle Tribune said that if I put some feathers in my hair, you wouldn't be freaked out, so here goes.

Trends will die in due time. Most tiers I know have watched the market and capitalized on it. I think my Dad is on his third Abel thanks to the stupid prices people are paying.

/just started tying last year
//haven't started using feathers yet and won't bother to do so until the trend dies

They were roach clips in the 70s. Today, they're clamped to your real hair with a pair of pliers and stay in until the hairdresser takes them out w/tools. Otherwise, you're gonna lose a hank of hair.

Did I start this trend?

I remember when this trend first came around - 80's? and wearing feather earings and feathered roach clips. My dad hated it but mom thought is was pretty cool. You know your're getting old when you see "new" fashion trends come around for the second or third time.

It might freak out your parents, if your parents are microbiologists.

Seriously, wearing feathers is like wearing a bag of someone else's toenail clippings. It doesn't say "glam," it says, "I'm a very special boy who went to the beach with my parents and decided to put flotsam on my head."

I've never seen this. I didn't know it was a thing. I'm so out of the loop! However will I be fashionable now?! Though I do remember beading, wrapping, and feathers in hair in the late '90s.

When white women put feathers in their hair, they're imitating and mocking the Other, brown people's ritualistic use of feathers, that's WHY it's considered "rebellious".

Yo, Janis Joplin put feathers in her hair and she wasn't racist but she was rebellious for the best of reasons.

They're feathers from Roosters.

Skarekrough check out DominaNY pictures. I don't know what feathers the Native Americans are using, but I know the display feathers the Papuan gentleman at the top is wearing is the main cause of the near extinction of several species of birds. I realize that no one's lopping off a bird of paradise's head to throw some feathers on an insecure American girl who's trying to keep up with the latest of trends, but several species of birds in Papua are about to be wiped out because they are pretty.

The feathers fly fishermen use are from Roosters. Specifically from places like Whiting Farms. They're bred for qualities fly tiers need when tying.

That's the corner of the world I'm coming from. Everyone else can go take a farking leap as far as I'm concerned.

Oh, take it easy on the white women. It's not their fault they have no culture of their own and they're trying to latch on to someone else's. Personally, I find it flattering that they're seeking it out rather than trying to stamp it out like European settlers have been trying to do for the last 200+ years now.

As I am a hooman, I vote for allowing native cultures to stay alive and vibrant and let a particular bird species die out. Species do die out, whether by human invention or a myriad of other reasons.

Sure, let the Papuans get missionized, wear white people's clothes, worship white people's stupid superstitious gods, lose all traces of their indigenous culture so they can flock to the cities on the coasts of Papua and live in horrific poverty. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

They've been putting bird feathers on their heads for probably 40,000 years. Leave them alone and celebrate how feathery they are.
