Yeah, I heard about this on Facebook. Drew's dad has some brass balls, Itellyouwhat.

"I remember reaching second base. After that, the next thing I remember was waking up in the hospital four days later,"

Yeah, I've had dates like that.

Drew who?

/seriously though very cool

video man: Drew's dad has some brass balls

I know, right? I takes a real man to flop over from a heart attack and be zapped back to life.

Not overly sure why Drew confined the whole set of updates to his Facebook wall and then let it leak onto the Sports page. I'm sure he'd have found all the support he wanted here had he asked for it.

That said, though, great to know his dad's doing all right.

Bill Curtis suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and died ... four times.

I knew Drew had some Cat blood in him.

/take care of the five you got left, Bill

2011-11-21 03:14:32 PM
"They said he died four times ... twice on the field and twice in the ambulance," Neace said.
"That means he has five lives left," Nancy Curtis said.

One thing he's having a hard time adjusting to is the fact that he can't drive.
"I guess the law is that if you die, you aren't allowed to drive for six months," Nancy Curtis said.

Awesome.

2011-11-21 03:14:34 PM
He is sitting on the edge of his chair, waiting to be able to play softball again, you can be damn sure of that.

2011-11-21 03:14:41 PM
No way this goes green. ;)

Best wishes, Drew's Dad!

glad to hear it

I love Drew's mom.

2011-11-21 03:15:27 PM
...ah, it made the main page too. Well then, there you go.

2011-11-21 03:15:42 PM
What the hell would you rule on the field as an umpire after that play? Out? Safe?

Either way, glad he won Drew.

/hoping a baseball nerd will quote the official rulebook with the right call.

Good to know that technology was there and people knew how to use it, and he's doing well. Sudden cardiac arrest outside of the hospital has an abysmally low survival rate.

/mom wasn't so lucky :(

Bravo.

Not much to say except glad your dad is okay and that they had a defibrillator. My job has a couple and the machines really are automatic. You put the pads on the body, the machine runs a quick test. Then it either tells you to clear so a shock can be delivered to the person, or that no shock is needed and to continue CPR. The machine even counts off for you on CPR and tells you when to give a breath.

2011-11-21 03:17:17 PM
Glad he's ok

2011-11-21 03:17:55 PM
And here I thought it was only good for "accidentally" feeling up chicks. Good luck, Curtises.

From the quotes in the article, it seems like Drew's mom could be an active Fark headline writer.

Glad the Hero tag is used and not the Sad tag!

He over ran the base, therefore, he's out.

Bestest wishes.

Awesome story. Early defibrillation and CPR are the keys to survival in sudden cardiac arrests in the field.

/Death ≠ asystole/v-fib
//you only die once

Wishing the best to Drew, and his family.

It started off as another calm November day. However, no one knew -- or did they? -- what was in store. Tom Hendley and Ed Neace saved Drew's dad's life. Prior to the even, Curtis had never had any health problems and had never been hospitalized. Was it a fortunate outcome that these two were there, or was it all part of a larger, more nefarious plan?

What we found out in our report may shock you.

"Senior League's president, had suggested the class for his fellow players and also suggested that they purchase a defibrillator to have at all their games."

saved a life that suggestion did. CPR really can't help you when your heart stops, its utility is pretty much just for keeping someone's brain alive while you go get the shocky shocky machine, or give meds... awesome story, and glad Drew's dad benefited.

They've improved since I last got my training.

Fantastic story. I'll add my own to the list of congrats for the guys who did CPR.

It's pretty amazing how widespread and common place defibrillators have become.

Not so long ago, portable defibrillators were something out of James Bond....

Anyway, my best wishes to Mr. Curtis and to all of Drew's family, and everyone else in here of course, as well.

Probably is. Might as well support her son's business.

will pray for his recovery.

Not sure which I am supposed to do here:

- Pisgah Sucks!

- So what, people die every day?

- Who?

- He'll get over it

- (post a picture of Tony Curtis, saying RIP Tony Curtis in bold underneath)

- Deride him for crapping his pants and blame all of the OWS team for doing it.

\either way, I'm glad the other players didn't use the Ignore feature and saved Mr Bill

HOLY CHRISTWAGONS! O_O

I hope your dad has a speedy recovery, Drew. That... that's scary.

CSB time:

My dad is 61, never smoked, isn't overweight and exercises regularly. About a month ago, he started getting what he thought was panic attacks (cold sweats, slightly blurry vision, short of breath). He went for a stress test and the results were within normal levels, but he was referred to a cardiologist just in case. They go in, have a look, and discover that he has 4 blockages in his arteries... two weeks and one triple-bypass later, he's up and around and on the mend. The panic attacks were actually heart attacks, he just didn't realize it because there was no associated pain. The docs chalk it up to bad genetics, which doesn't bode well for me considering I have all the bad habits he was smart enough to avoid. Anyway, he's home resting and plans on being back at work in the new year. Big shout-out to the fine folks at Sunnybrook hospital here in Toronto, and thank FSM for our socialized healthcare system.

Get well soon, Drew's dad.

Glad to hear it. Here is to a speedy recovery!

Viva Papa Curtis!

Good job to all involved who were able to perform the CPR and respond calmly and rationally to this.

/Going to go see my buddy today that had the same thing happen
// He blue-lined 6 times and got 49 shocks

/seriously, awesome story Drew, must've been hell for you though

Senior League Softball... that's gotta be an interesting thing to watch. And not for the right reasons, either.

Still good on him for being active, and good on his teammates for getting the heads up play.

/would it have been bad form to hit on Drew's mom at the funeral?

Holy Crap. Best wishes to all the Curtis's.

/except Tony Curtis. He always creeped me out.

First, glad your Dad's OK, Drew.

Major pet peeve: Bill Curtis did not die 4 times. His heart stopped. Had it not restarted, then he gets credit for dying. Death is a one time deal, unless you are Hindu, but then there is another birth in between deaths and some sort of business with a blue 8 armed chick.

Wow, that's one lucky (or tough) guy. The chances of surviving something like that are minuscule.

/Best wishes for recovery Mr. Curtis.
