I don't tip because society says I have to. Alright, I tip when somebody really deserves a tip. If they put forth an effort, I'll give them something extra. But I mean, this tipping automatically, that's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned they're just doing their job.

I never tip in restaurants. It's extortion. Those waiters are already being paid, why should I pay them again?

Also, why does this sandwich taste like ball sweat?

Because you're about to demand a full refund for crappy food and a DNA test to sue for assault/battery?

I can understand a society where tipping is not normally done (because the server is actually paid a decent wage), but to actually be INSULTED by it? WTF? You'd actually be angry at someone handing you a wad of free cash?

I'm not tipping cooks in a jar at a takeout register. They're just going to spend it on weed anyway.

I work at my dad's store selling fitness equipment, and of course I also deliver it. We give free delivery and setup, and it's amazing at the rarity of a tip offer. People tip a pizza delivery guy for moving a pizza 10 feet from their car to your door, and I move a treadmill or home gym from the store to your attic, not to mention putting it together. 90% of the time, there's no tip. What the hell is wrong with people?

I just avoid the situation by not ordering from places that charge a separate delivery fee. It would be one thing if I was ordering a lot of stuff for a big group of people, but if it's just me, I'm not paying an extra $5 in tip/delivery fees for a $10-15 order.

blondski: The article says America is the most tip happy country in the world. Maybe if waiters got a living wage we wouldn't have to be.

Which is what almost every American I know wants. We're sick of being responsible for paying the wages of the employees directly and restaurants shouldn't be allowed to do so.

But, and I mean this sincerely, a big chunk of wait staff in the US would still expect a tip. This is a group that blames the increase in the standard tip from 10% to 20% on inflation, ignoring the fact the food prices the percentage is based on went up pretty much in line with inflation. The doubling of the standard tip in my lifetime has no basis in common sense.

Oh, and if the pizza guy didn't look like a pedophile and then start asking about your plans for the upcoming weekend he'd probably get better tips.

20% is a joke. If I get great service, I will tip 15%. Less then great, 5-10%. But I have been known to stiff someone if the service is shiatty. Usually, I will leave a quick note as to why I didn't tip.

What's bs is the automatic 18% tip in restaurants for large dinner parties. I had to get up from my chair and track down my waitress who was watching a football game in the kitchen to get our check and there was that fee added for all her hard work ignoring us.

I lived in Japan for a year. Yeah, they get offended. It's a pride thing. If you tip, you're saying that the only reason they worked hard is because they thought they were going to get a little something extra, and they value hard work in and of itself. I thought it was a dumb reason myself, but hey, it also meant I didn't have to tip anyone but the Philippina "buy me drinky" girls for a year, so I got over it.

blondski: The article says America is the most tip happy country in the world. Maybe if waiters got a living wage we wouldn't have to be.

What about states where they DO get the full minimum wage? California requires that waiters be paid $8 an hour, but they still expect tips. It's so ingrained in the culture that when they are paid like everyone else, you still have to tip.

Really I'm Black: but the delvery guy doesnt actually pocket the delivery fee. the company does right? he does for the tip. its not his fault his company sucks

I work for a major pizza chain and yes, the company keeps the delivery fee. On top of that the drivers get paid $4/ hr while out on the road and only minimum wage when in the shop. We also get a small commission per delivery for gas, but we still wind up using about a quartet of our tips just to fill back up. Lastly, as our tips are reported, taxes on those are taken out of our paycheck. Mine averages about a little over or under a hundred bucks every two weeks. So yeah, we work for tips.

When people buy a $500-$3000 piece of fitness equipment I'm sure they assume that the "free delivery" is built into the cost and that the delivery people get paid and the trucks and gas are paid for by the retailer. A bit different from the pizza guy who's making minimum wage and buying his own gas.

Your post is a prime example of the attitude of entitlement to tips that pervades North America.

We have some places we go to like that. Got to push a button to scan through a list of names on the intercom. Which is really hard to do as most of the time these people only give us their first name! I'm not buzzing everyone in the building with the same first name at ten o' clock at night hoping to find the right one.

tip Question:

Do you tip at a Bed and Breakfast. I'm confused about the whole owner/housekeeper thing.

2011-11-20 11:02:57 AM
I don't like the idea of tipping. So what I do is, I make my own food and carry my own shiat around rather than expecting it to be done by people whose employers have collectively lobbied for the ability to pay them less than minimum wage.

When I do tip, I tip really well (50-100%). I'm sure it'd pay off if I went out to eat or had food delivered more than once or twice a year.

I really hate it when coworkers have food delivered. They are not only shiatty tippers, they're embarrassingly stingy about it (like, calculating the amount of change they want back to the penny: "my order was 5.34, so I want back 4.16"). I often sit there wondering why you wouldn't just let the guy have the whole 10 bucks. He'll think you're a swell guy, you'll make another $10 in the next 10 minutes, and next time I won't have to listen to you whine for two farking hours about how hungry you are and why's the Chinese place taking so long?!

I think a lot of you have missed the elephant for all those grey posts in the room...

Yes, you should tip either way. But that should never have come up, because you can just order from one of the 27 same-food-type alternatives that don't charge you for delivery.

Now, personally, I have often wondered about delivery/installers, like the sort that deliver furniture and appliances for which you clearly pay $50-$100. But for fast food? Fark that! Your pizza ain't all that, bub.

I love how tipping is built into receipts these days. They try to get you to tip BEFORE service is rendered or food delivered. How about no?

Though I love putting it on receipts as the server then gets taxed on it. Holy crap they hate it and because of that I love it.

Oh wow, yeah. I had a laptop arrive all beaten up and useless. The UPS guy put it at the door, sorta knocked, then ran. I know because I was watching for it, and was looking out the window. I should have opened the door at the first sign of laptop arrival, but I'm too shy.

The thing I find weird is who gets tips:

Dude who opens the front door to the hotel: Tip
Person who bags your groceries: No Tip

The waitstaff who remembers your whole table's drinks, comes round to check up on your table on a regular basis and brings all the drinks to you even though the restaurant/bar is packed: Tip
The bartender who pulls a bottle from the fridge and hands it to you: Tip, probably more than the waitstaff.

Seriously, is there anything more fun and satifying you can do with your money than toss it around like a big shot? Roll in to a hotel and sprinkle a few twenties when you get there, see how much more enjoyable your stay is.

Giant smiles and HELLO Mr. 1729! whenever you come or go. I don't have a lot of money, hardly any really, but I know how to make it count.

GimpyNip: I was at a hotel recently. Much to my shruggin' the only restaraunt in the hotel was offering a buffet. Full disclosure, I find buffets to be repulsive but there was a rare October blizzard going on in CT at the time so it was our only option. Anyway, I knew what I signed up for. $25 a plate, no drinks included. That's cool but nobody ever came by to take a drink order. Water wasn't even provided and we had to take utensils from another table. The only time I ever saw a "server" was when some guy eventually dropped the check off. There was a 22% gratuity charge added to the bill...at a buffet with no drink service. I told the guy to take it off and he replied in broken english, "I wish meal was free but meal is not!" Whatever, I paid it but I won't be back.

/I have no problem with tipping but 22% at a buffet??

Why should he do his job? His tip was guaranteed.

Personally, I like the way they do it here in France. Service is included in the price of the food (and is usually quite good, FWIW), but if you feel that the waitstaff has gone above and beyond in some way or another you can leave a little bit which is almost always appreciated. No social obligation to tip, but you can do so and not be insulting or gauche by tossing money around. The French word for "tip" is pourboire, which literally means "for a drink." So leaving a tip is like saying, "Well done, mate. Here, pull yourself a pint on me." It's a nice happy medium.
