The car in the last wreck looked like they were trying to play pachinko with the trees.

I love the well-placed handrail that was probably put there 60 years ago. It finally found a use. Love these vids. Rally racing is such an awesome sport. Wish it would take hold in America.

The one at 2:36. The guy filming it is damn lucky he didn't end up squished.

Why the hell was there an ATV on the course? I thought these things were all marked off and cleared beforehand.

2011-11-20 01:15:47 PM
I enjoyed that very much.

ATV wouldn't be that bad. How about this (new window)

It's a tiny comparison, but I'm chief marshal at a Soapbox Derby in the south of England. We spend all of the sunday setting up the course with plastic barriers and huige hay bales. All spectator areas are taped off, signs are put up and regular tannoy announcements are made on the day, alerting the spectators to the dangers of getting on the track while the races are underway

Doesn't stop the brainless morons wandering all over the road, pushing buggies with kids in, walking dogs across and driving mobility scooters up the hill.

Sounds trivial, but some of these soapboxes weigh up to 80kg and the fastest ones have been clocked at 53mph

Video is useless without this guy.

I'm a huge fan of Formula 1 and believe that it's the best form of motorsport, but I firmly believe that the best rally drivers are the best racers in the world. Immense talent, incredible skill and complete and total insanity. It's a wonderful combination.

The less-than-best rally drivers are mostly just insane. It's great.

Actually, video is useless without this.

Absolute farking madness. Complete disregard for spectator safety and the most powerful rally cars ever made.

That last one was like a game of Plinko

Oh, I understand where you're coming from completely. I've been to autocross events where spectators have done insanely stupid things, like walk across the course just as a car is leaving the gate, or mistake the line for getting in a run for the line to leave the mall parking lot. But with insurance the way it is, especially at motorosports events, you'd think they'd have the place a little more locked down.

Is it bad I was rooting for them to plow through 80 people?

Because when EVERYONE was gathered at the bottom of the hill, everyone deserves what was coming to them.

/I get rally racing
//I don't get rally racing spectators
///or idiots, as I call them

Finally, a use for West Virginia back roads. However, the lawyers would screw it up, you know they would.

Well, if you watch that video long enough, exactly that happens.

I'll never understand why people got that close though. I guess it was sort of similar to the running of the bulls.

Is there a reason a few of the guys run out at the wrecked car like an umpire calling a runner 'SAFE!!!' ?

2011-11-20 06:50:21 PM
PacManDreaming: The car in the last wreck looked like they were trying to play pachinko with the trees.

Came to a stop with the rubber side down though.

I saw one a couple years ago where there was a big rollover crash and when the car finally came to a stop and was upright the driver was trying to restart the car and signaling for people to push them out of the field. It took a while but someone finally got through to him that there was only one wheel left on the car and he wasn't gonna be making it to the finish line. He was just totally focused on losing as little time as possible.

Is it me, or did the car at 1:42 look like it was sticking its tongue out at the camera?

TheMega: Is there a reason a few of the guys run out at the wrecked car like an umpire calling a runner 'SAFE!!!' ?

Rally spectators get really hands-on after a crash. They'll roll a car over and give it a push-start if the thing still runs.

2011-11-20 07:39:14 PM
So I guess people only watch this for the wrecks?

2011-11-20 08:53:39 PM
Anyone know if the guy at 2:45 was ok? Looks like they went over the edge.

That's a BMW E30 3-series...looks like it's got some reflective tape or something on the license plate housing. Shame to see that car die.

Anyone else notice that 1:12, 1:42, and 2:28 are the same turn.

Fish in a Barrel: Anyone else notice that 1:12, 1:42, and 2:28 are the same turn.

Yup. As i saw the turn, again, I knew exactly what would happen. I'm sure that's a popular spot to watch the race. heh...
