Unfortunately, so would my cats.

We had a screech owl as a pet when I was a kid. He was born with deformed feet, and he was pushed out of the nest. We fed him hamburger and chicken innards from the butcher.

Cute and all, but the screeching in the middle of the night wasn't fun.

We eventually gave him away to a nature conservatory. He had a good life, especially considering he was supposed to die, with his gnarled feet. He'd never be able to hunt.

been attacked (twice) whilst pedaling through burrowing-owl territory
they dive-bomb, then screech and grab the back of your head at the same moment
believe it or not, this will surprise you
the bloody scalp is nowhere nearly as traumatic as the trail-snax in the drawers

That reminds me of...

youknowwhereyouare.com

...which was a surprisingly good movie. I was struck by how authentic the owls felt in it. Obviously they had a number of consultant ornithologists on that show because they really moved like birds and they never used their wings like hands as is typical in these anthropomorphized movies.

And the combat in it... way cool.

Check out the Guardians of Ga'Hoole if you haven't yet.

Very cool indeed. We had a cat that was an excellent hunter. She totally reminded me of an owl.. the eyes and ears always active.
I've only seen 2 owls in the wild. I guess really only 1 because the 2nd time I only heard and felt the wind of the wings flapping above my head as I was mtn biking. My friends said it was quite a scene to see an owl appear to try landing on my bike helmet.

A friend of mine had to wear a hard hat to work because a particular hawk kept messing up his head. The hawk only picked on this one guy.

Wonder whether Little Owl is genuine breed? Calls for a GoodSearch!
One of comments attached to subbied tale/tail said don't pet their backs, it messes up the oils needed to lubricate feathers. Top of head & under chin are much better skritching places.

You know what would be nice? IF THEY TOLD YOU WHAT KIND OF OWLS THEY ARE. Just a little bit of details would be nice so you know what critters you're looking at. I mean, it looks like a baby burrowing owl, and maybe a jealous horned owl and a barn owl thrown in. Is it too much to ask for just a little bit of detail if you're going to write an article??

2011-11-20 10:42:13 AM
Not really surprising. My parents had a cockatiel, and it loved having its head scritched.

Very cute pictures. Very irresponsible article. Owls should not be kept as pets.

You know that Johnny Werzner kid - the kid who delivers papers in the
neighborhood? He's a fine kid. Some of the neighbors say he smokes
crack, but I don't believe it. Anyway, for his 10th birthday, all he
wanted was a burrow owl, just like his old man. "Dad, get me a burrow
owl. I'll never ask for anything else as long as I live". So the guy
breaks down and buys him a burrow owl. Anyway at 10:30 the other night I
go out into my yard and there's the Werzner kid looking up in the tree. I
said, "What are you looking for?" He said, "I'm looking for my burrow
owl." I say, "Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick! Everybody knows that a
burrow owl lives in a hole in the ground! Why the hell do you think they
call it a burrow owl, anyway?!"

I have mixed feelings on owls. On one hand, it was cool when they used to live near my home. On the other, I feel much better now that I can leave my cat outdoors without worrying.

I typerd further up the pg: Wonder whether Little Owl is genuine breed? Calls for a GoodSearch!
I did do that thing, & Little Owl is a breed, Athene noctua, lives in Europe, N Africa & into Asia. So now we know, sorta; GS linked to a Wikipedia article.
Then: One of comments attached to subbied tale/tail said don't pet their backs, it messes up the oils needed to lubricate feathers. Top of head & under chin are much better skritching places.

This is a Virtual Skritch, concocted & contrived for Caturday where it's needed/used now that it exists. Attempt to show earlier was Too Big & called Unloadable.
All posting editor said this time was too many nested italix tags. Can live with that!

Which reminds me, I still need to finish the book series. I've only read up to #6. I was quite pleasantly surprised by the movie, too.

Baby Owl is a Pygmy Owl and is full grown. I raised one to maturity about ten years ago and they're that cute and more.

Planning on getting a Little Owl sometime in the next few years; I'd like to start with a Barn Owl first so that (a) I have more owl-specific experience (b) I'll have a nice smaller aviary ready after the larger one outgrows it.

They are adorable.

/that sentence does not need to be more complete.
