God love the Andy Rooney generation of columnists - and I am an occasional bowtie tie-er myself, let it be known - but at this point they ought to catch on that the most culturally relevant thing they can do is assume room temperature.

"Wearing a clip-on bow tie makes a guy look like a dork."

Yeah, it's the clip-on that makes the difference...

He's right. Men should wear real ties (bow or necktie). Clip-ons are for boys and McDonald's managers.

Except for security/law enforcement. Great way to be strangled to death by a nogoodnik.

I actually prefer to look like a dork, and like my clip on bow tie for that reason.

Unlike a reglear (new window) tie, it never falls in my soup, unless I'm extremely drunk.

Bill Wundram smugly refits his typewriter dustcover, having just crafted the best hard-hitting piece of journalism in the Quad-city area for years. With that Andy Rooney out of the way, the growing noospaper industry is Wundram's to conquer.

Bow ties are surprisingly hard to find. You can't just walk into the local clothing store and pick one up. I used to be able to get them at a local western wear shop but they no longer carry them.

I have to wear bow ties a lot. I've never figured out how to tighten them once their tied, or whether that's even possible. So I have to nearly choke myself as I'm tying it, so that it isn't hanging slack once it's tied. Any suggestions?

I flip up my collar before tying the tie. The slider to adjust length is easily accessed behind my neck by feeling for it, then I flip the collar down.

Bowties are not hard to tie at all; they just take a little more practice than regular neckties. And the real benefit comes at the end of the evening - the dork who leaves a clip-on hanging from his neck looks like a total loser, but the untied bowtie hanging from a man's neck leaves him looking like James Bond.

Men should wear real ties (bow or necktie)

You obviously don't live in Seattle. The only guys who wear ties here are the teenage Mormon missionaries.

I once went to a meeting with investment bankers. We thought that we should show maturity and wear a suit and tie. We were the only guys in the room with ties: even the bankers were in sweaters.

Bow ties, real and/or clip on...are the last bastion of the thoroughly gay.

Never could quite get the hang of actually tying a bowtie, so I'm grateful for them. I suppose if I needed them more often than for weddings, that might make a difference. Of course the ones you get with a rented tux aren't really "clip-ons", they do have a band around the neck that fastens at the back. I always thought I could get cred points for actually mastering how to do it.

The only thing cool (timelords notwithstanding) about a bow tie is that it's just one letter away from being "bowie", which is cool whether it's a singer or a knife.

For those outside the Quad Cities, Mr. Wundram is our resident cranky old man newspaper columnist. He can often be seen with an onion affixed to his belt, yelling at a cloud, and his opinions in no way reflect the majority of most residents here.

Whenever I see a bowtie on a black guy (outside of formal occasions), I almost always first think "Nation of Islam". The guy in the pic looks like he's earned the right to wear whatever the fark he wants, wherever and whenever he wants, with no guff.
