Thanks to the first commercial being JLO, I think they have become the new VW Beatle. It will be a car for teenage girls, gay men, and 40 year old woman who want to appear hip.

No, the ads Fiat runs in this country are JLo driving a car, which I'm sure she never does, back to her "home" in the ghetto.

The only people who will buy a car because of JLo are girls, gay men, and older women.

In other news; FIAT owns Ferrari and Maserati; continuing a long line of automotive excellence at nine times the cost in repairs and maintenance of the average Japanese, German or American vehicle.

Also; kiss your insurance goodbye. The Fiat 50o in Europe is the single most stolen vehicle (in America, it's the Honda Accord LX).

The question is, would you really want to spend close to $30,000 on a car that's got the power and handling dynamics of a Honda Civic?

I'd rather have a used BMW 1-series.

They should have led with Alfa Romeo like they promised, or at least brought in more models

Also, I think they should have maybe tied their image to their halo marquees

not sure what they were thinking there

Shouldn't it weigh less though?

If i were less lazy I'd see what Top Gear did with the car.

This. She drives the newish Fiat into the Bronx while explaining that you may think the Bronx is scary and bad, but she likes it.

It's not a good ad for the Fiat, her, or the Bronx. They sucked all the cool out of that car in a 20-second spot. Only Droid ads are worse current ads.

The car itself is OK, a bit overpriced here, and technically superior to the original while losing most of the coolness. But, then, that describes the old New Beetle, too. Judging by the New New Beetle, it takes like 15 years for one of these reintroduced iconic cars to actually capitalize intelligently on the design strengths of the original.

But that's OK, because it means eventually BMW will produce a cool version of their lame retro roadster.

Living in Omaha, I don't believe I'll see very many Fiats on the road. Hatches are the minority here. This area likes their trucks, crossovers and sedans. I think it'll be a product that sells better in larger cities.

2011-11-19 01:07:30 PM
There aren't many hatches offered in the US, and most of the ones that are offered are de-emphasized, or adamantly called something else. Manufacturers and dealers in the US are convinced that hatchbacks don't sell, even though referenced against their advertising index they outsell almost all other motor vehicle formats.

Mazda took a chance and advertised the 3 halfway aggressively, and they sold more than expected. Nevertheless, the logic has failed to penetrate.

If you watch a show like Top Gear, you'll see lots of hatchbacks that make most of the small cars sold in the US look like crap by comparison. And most of those hatches won't be sold here, chiefly because of the notion that Americans won't buy hatches.

Still, it's not like the car industry is overflowing with management genius, so . . . no surprises.

I see this same logic when it comes to wagons also. Hatches and wagons are by far more practical in terms of utility when it comes to hauling around kids, groceries, tools, suitcases, etc. Yet the US auto industry is insistent on crossovers and sedans. I like a good sedan as much as the next guy, but most car buyers want something as a utility, not luxury or performance. A hatchback or wagon can capture all three of those characteristics though when designed properly.

Top Gear did a small car challenge with a Toyota iQ, Skoda Roomster and Alfa Romeo MiTo At the very end, they drive the cars through a town filled with dozens and dozens of Fiat 500s reminding them that they forgot all about the "best" car in the class.

The first time I saw that commercial my initial thought was that she's perfectly safe parking it there in front of the tenement since no self-respecting car thief would ever steal a Fiat. Sort of like when Lewis Grizzard talked about leaving his Chevy Vega in a rough part of town with the keys and a set of jumper cables on the hood in the hopes that he could use the insurance money to buy a better car but the Vega was always there when he came back.

Actually, let me correct myself. According to Wikipedia, Lancia and Chrysler are work as "co-developers", and some Chryslers will be sold in Europe as Lancia's...and vice versa. Apparently at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, there was a rebadged Lancia Delta on display.

So they may be coming - just not as Lancia's. Interesting!

The Abarth? Jeremy Clarkson basically loved it - compared it to the first Golf GTI, which is high praise from him.

I've long lamented the lack of good hatches in this country. I like small cars but am a working musician, I still need to carry moderate loads. Hence why I bought a GTI...nice car, performs great, can haul tons of shiat, very comfortable and quiet, very well equipped, not too expensive either. Sweet car, and its a hatch.....and nobody understand why I bought it. They all think its a stupid little car. I don't get it.

Subaru just does not build a quality automobile anymore. They have cut corners on engine internals in the past few years and reliability has suffered. Not to mention that they still use that horrible old 5speed in everything but the STI...

I own a 2006.5 VW Rabbit and I couldn't agree more. Fantastic car, plenty of room for 4 and I haven't had a problem hauling anything. While the Jetta may have a bit more room in the boot, the hatch is much better for boxes of larger size, step ladder, 8' long pieces of lumber, etc. I find it to be much more utilitarian than my Jetta PLUS it is very reliable, comfortable and decent economy.

Paid 11k for it 3 years ago with 24k miles on it. Best car I have ever owned.

Yay for hatchbacks. Our car co-op has two Honda Fits... and holy crap you can fit a fark ton of stuff in the back of one of those little things. Good luck getting a giant metal filing cabinet home in a sedan of the same size. Or a carseat/stroller combo in the original box. Both fit in the Fits with acres of room to spare. They're like a TARDIS that you drive.
