To be fair, the officer was sort of bound by the new law. Stopped by the lack of a plate, no license, no passport, yeah, he did exactly what he was supposed to do, thanks to the way this law is worded.

Congrats, kids. You got EXACTLY what you wanted. Enjoy that.

This. I can't honestly say that this scenario would have gone differently in any other state: car with no tags being driven by a foreign national with no ID? Seems the standard anywhere would be to take him in until they could establish his identity, which was all they seemed to do here

I've travelled a lot overseas myself. And I keep my driver license and passport close while on the road. But, I've never been arrested in foreign countries when I didn't have them, even in the Third World.
