Why would they let her enlist in that condition?

No, no you're not.

Someone just signed up for 4 years of desk duty I'm betting. The military is real sensitive about repeating anything like the Sullivans incident and she'll end up as an aide at the five sided squirrel cage or something where finding parking is OPFOR.

Good for her, but I fear in 12 months she's going to be bitter and burnt out when she realizes command plans on shielding her.

Exterminate brown people?

"I'm going to finish what he started"

Really? What did he start? A Latte stand in Kabul?

What a ridiculous woman. There is nothing heroic about stupidity.

2wolves: "No, no you're not."

So sad, but so true.
I just hope she finds something positive in the service before she gets sent over there are realizes the pointlessness and powerlessness of the situation.

She would be better off campaigning to get us out of Afghanistan.

"I'm going to finish what he started"

Dying for the profits of the military-industrial complex?

This isn't WWII, there's no need for you to go and fight, don't throw your life away.

2011-11-18 01:43:11 PM
Nope, she's not naive at all.

2011-11-18 01:44:05 PM
That's very romantic; I'm sorry for her loss. Cynicism begins here: Fiance? So likely no spousal support or any other benies you get from being a military spouse/widow. I imagine she joined for the same reason many of us join. She needed a gd job.

2011-11-18 01:44:53 PM
Stuff like this worries me. There's no denying that her actions are noble and romantic and motivated by nothing but the best intentions, but is it really a good enough reason to enlist? I'm having a hard enough time understanding why we're still deployed and I'm in an infantry company myself.

This mentality of "we fight because they fought because their fathers..." is very jingoistic and disturbing. I think that while she's being very brave and strong to become a marine, is it really the best way to honor him?

You are right that thye are going to sheild her, but it isn;t from being killed.

Women are more likely to come back preggo then killed.

The fifties called. They want their mindless "patriotism" back.

Karvey: Dude! Insensative much?

Oh right. Wouldn't want to say anything critical during this difficult time...

Maybe she should ask herself what her fiances death accomplished before jumping off the same cliff like all the other lemmings...

Let's continue a pointless war we can't afford against people that did nothing to us.

Who needs to be in the marines to do that ?

Bootstraps, people.

I find her reaction pathetic.

Best girlfriend ever
You got that right

This sounds like either the begining of and Irish Ballad or the end of an Irish Drinking Song.

No you're not.

Good thing they never got married, she would have turned into an army/navy wife. There is nothing more horribly annoying than that group of people, especially when they are able to access the internet.

In my defense, I meant doing it legally. I suppose you could become a cop, though.

2011-11-18 01:50:59 PM
Yeah, what everybody else said. "Revenge" is not a good motivator in a war with not visible enemy, no boundaries and zero actual, quantifiable goals.

And yes, she will be in a safe desk job. Most likely at the base downstate rather than Afghanistan. This ain't WWII or even Korea or Vietnam. It's far more complicated and far less defined.

Jingoism and Patriotism make us look like rubes rather than heroes.

Incorect use of fiancé/fianceé trifecta in play?

2011-11-18 01:51:51 PM
While I appreciate her support of her husband, I feel the need to point these things out:

a) Subby, fiance with one e indicates the male partner. Fiancee with two e's indicates the female half.
b) Like everyone else said, she's not finishing anything
c) This is why you get married BEFORE the deployment (that and you get a ton of extra money for BAH with dependents).

2011-11-18 01:52:06 PM
I'd say she has more balls than the fark common taters. Good for her.

I think she should have waited longer before making that decision...something tells me it's not going to work out well for her...knowing what to expect and being able to handle it accordingly are two very different things.

As an AF wife with my own hobbies and career I also agree. I want to say stfu but that would be unamerican and feminazi-esque.
