I've seen a lynx twice in the wild, which is pretty unusual given that they're pretty shy animals. I suppose keeping one as a pet is safer than a cougar, tiger, or lion, but they'd still be hard on the puppies and kitties in the neighbourhood if they ever got out.

So, they just took her pets from her, and won't tell her where they are? After everything's been OK for twenty years?

Fabulous. Just fabulous.

Here's my niece sitting next to her pet lynx.

The cat was awesome. It thought chihuahuas were a snack food. My brother found her in the city, half starved. She had been declawed and defanged, then abandoned. Some people suck.

Yeah, this sounds like a "you-didn't-pay-us-the-renewal-fee-so-we-repo'd-your-cats" deal to me. Although I'm not a big fan of people keeping large exotic pets, twenty years with no problems is a pretty good track record.

/should at least tell her how they're doing

CSB time

My dad and I were driving up the Al-Can to move my sister back down to the Lower 48. And on the way we saw a couple of moose, a herd of stupid sheep standing in the middle of the road and a metric ass-ton of broken down RV's but the coolest part was in the north part of BC. It was probably 10:00 pm and the sky was still bright and we were driving up a long low grade when right at the top, this animal trots across the road, perfect silhouette, huge paws, tufted ears, as big as a German Shepard easy. And it was gone in a second. my dad goes "what is that!?" and my brain kept wanting to say "bobcat" but then I was no, in Canada they're called "lynx!" Best part of the drive.

I think she should be charged with animal cruelty for dressing it in a feather boa and taking a picture.

Nobody looks good in a feather boa. Well, except for space aliens.

What a space alien in a boa might look like.

/yeah, yeah, it's not a feather boa

A Canadian lynx, although named for it's native country, do not have a chip in their necks that explode upon leaving said country.

Well, I hear that Ohio has pretty lax laws on exotic animals other than bears, and my daughter does want a pet.

This headline reminded me of my drive up and down the Cassiars. I had a staring contest with a lynx by the side of the road. (I was inside the truck). Aaaahhh - memories.

I found mine about 40 miles south of the Cassiar/al-can intersection. Lots of amazing wild country up there!

Clearly, karma is re-establishing a balance, as that looks like one content kitty now. And hopefully the people that made her defenseless and homeless are now deep in the digestive system of some other more powerful feline.

Rufus Lee King: So, they just took her pets from her, and won't tell her where they are? After everything's been OK for twenty years?

My reaction exactly. If that were me, I'd be all over the courts for an injunction of some kind. Or sniffing out every last animal refuge/care facility, pretending I was a reporter working on the story and asking if they'd taken the cats there and what their temperment was like.

The British have a word for the type of woman who dresses a lynx in a feather boa: daft.

It's an eloquent word when used with skill.

I'm not sure I've seen a Canada lynx in the wild but I believe I have seen bob cats (Lynx rufus, etc), which are a economy model lynx. There's a lot of variation in the fur pattern and colour. Up North here they tend to be drabber and less spotted. Further South they can apparently look like mini-leopards. I imagine snow and the amount of dappled sunlight in their habitat plays a role in the natural selection of coloration as well as the various species and varieties being slightly different.

2011-11-18 04:37:54 PM
So it's just like an American lynx except that it drinks bagged milk and says "aboot."

Rufus Lee King: So, they just took her pets from her, and won't tell her where they are? After everything's been OK for twenty years?

I'm against private ownership of wild cat--lots of badness, and not just "they might get out" (lower the gene pool for endangered species, wild cat trade, etc.).

But I'm also a pet owner. Given that, at the moment, it's a paperwork thing more than an abuse or endangering the public thing, I would think letting her know the status of her animals (location, well being, etc.) is far from unreasonable.

Yeah, me too, on both counts. Jokes aside, I'm guessing anyone who loves their pets enough to take glamour shots of them is probably taking decent care of them and deserves more than a "lol fark you" from the state.

I inherited a leopard from a friend who died. It was a very nice cat, defanged and declawed and overfed to the point it looked like a little beer keg. Poor thing could barely hop onto the couch.

I finally found her a home at a sanctuary in California, but after that Ohio thing blew up, I made a bunch of phone calls to make sure she was safe.

2011-11-18 07:04:00 PM

How are all you people getting bobcats? I've always wanted a bobcat. Yes, I realize it's far more work than a simple kitty cat but I think the experience would be rad.
