U8D1EyedSnake: Mr Rusty Shackleford : You should volunteer for one of the side noted items and do the specifically prohibited thing while pretending like you didn't.

That's the plan. I'm also a big fan of making these Swedish meat filled rolls (a recipe that has been passed down in my family) and watching as people prepare to split them open and apply butter only to realize that they are not regular wussy rolls but magical rolls filled with meat and sauerkraut and onion.

I will trade you my family recipe for Glogg for your family recipe for meat filled rolls. EIP.

legion_of_doo: Praise Cheesus: A teetotaler at a St. Patrick's Day party is not likely to get up in arms about folks drinking. Hell, I don't drink alcohol, but I'm just fine at a party as long as the host has extra mixers. Hell, even if there's only tap water available, I can have something to drink. Bonus: you can always ask the teetotaler to be the designated driver.

Are you alcoholic? We have a family member who is. It sucks to not have a drink when too much family is around, but it would suck worse to wave a drink in an alcoholic family member's face, so we just abstain.

I come from a long line of alcoholics. I had my first beer while still in diapers. I went through grade school with a hangover because I shared a room with my grandmother, who absolutely loved to while away the night playing gin and drinking whiskey. I would get blackout drunk in my teens, which is how I ended up pregnant after being sexually assaulted while drunk at 15.

I've been sober for 31 years. I do not refer to myself as an alcoholic. I just don't drink. However, I do keep a full bar in my house for guests.

: Can I have that recipe?
Sure thing. We call them "Aunt Jo's Meat Rolls."

Dough:
2 large potatoes, peeled, cooked and mashed- save 1 1/2 cups of potato water for dough
1 tsp yeast
2/3 c sugar
2 eggs, beaten
2/3 c oil
7-7 1/2 c flour
1 1/2 tsp salt

Place 1 1/2 c potato water in bowl. add yeast, stir until dissolved. Stir in sugar and salt, add mashed potatoes, egg and oil. Mix well. add flour. Let stand 10 min. Knead until smooth. Refrigerate for 24 hours in greased bowl, covered in plastic wrap. Remove and let stand at room temperature for 1 hour.
Divide dough into 3 parts. Roll 1/4" thick and cut into 4" squares. Pat 1 tsp (or more) of filling onto each square. Pull corners together and pinch. Place rolls pinched side down on a greased cookie sheet. Let raise 15-20 minutes. Brush with egg yolk and water mixture or butter. Bake 375 degrees for 30 minutes.

Filling:
1 1/2 lb ground beef, browned
1 16 oz can sauerkraut, rinsed and drained
1 package dry onion soup mix
a dash of cayenne pepper

Because I am a kind daughter-in-law, when I made my first Thanksgiving dinner for my kosher in-laws I made every possible attempt to avoid dairy and pork products in the side dishes. And I promptly discovered just how farking impossible it is to do that and still have a gluttonously delicious Thanksgiving Day meal. So I made two of every dish -- one without the forbidden products and one with. total PITA. This year they're in Florida, and I've three pounds of bacon ready to go.

There is not a single large land animal(in its natural habitat) that does not ingest animal protein of some kind. If you think herbivores don't get a few insects with each mouthful of grass or leaves, then you're just retarded. I've seen cows eat those tiny field mice that hide in tufts of grass. They're not seeking them out but they're not avoiding them either. A hippo is cretainly not gonna be all like, "Oh fark, a tadpole. *spit*" Wildebeests aren't gonna be all like, "Shait. Grasshoppers. Keep going."

Pretty much this. I really hate the fake allergy people, because they are the reason that many people do not take allergies seriously.
Although I think that justice would be better served by letting these people drown in a vat that contains the byproduct of reactions from celiacs who ate contaminated food.

YES SO MUCH THIS!!!

I also hate fake allergy people. Yes, I can tell there is a small amount of milk in bread by the way my stomach churns in less than 20 minutes and the rash the grows across my chest and face. Don't say you are allergic if you don't like it, say you don't like it.

IMO elk are only good for jerky, or hamburger if you add some other fatty meat to it.

Cover in bacon strips so it won't dry out. Very lean.

As with any other game the taste depends upon what it was eating. A deer that's been eating from a corn field or orchard will be very different than one munching on thistles.

It's from an abandoned website called fugly.net. Last time I saw it around was in 2004. Admittedly, I haven't checked since then, so it could have been abandoned last month, for all I know. Regardless, all the wonderful goodness that was that site is no more. It took me a bit of time to even find that little gem; fortunately someone else had posted it on a forum, so I was able to snatch it. Also, it was fortunate that I was able to remember enough of it to find it. :)

Have any of you read Food in History by Reay Tannahill? (new window) It's been years since I read it, but I couldn't put it down. She also wrote an equally fascinating Sex in History.

Have to pull those off the shelf and blow the dust off. This thread has gotten me interested in the origins of vegetarianism which, if I recall, she covers.

I'm a fan of meat, in moderation, myself. 21 lb Butterball in the fridge, and plan to make drippin' gravy, and green beans with bits of thick sliced fried bacon and onion mixed in. Butter and cream in the mashed potatoes. Among my guests are two I have not seen in years - if they oppose turkey, we'll have enough other stuff to fill them up, I guess.

You know what I think would be good (but have never had the courage to try)? Bacon-wrapped peanut butter bites.

My idea would be as follows:

Roll creamy peanut butter into 1/2-inch balls.

Wrap each ball in bacon.

Coat exterior of bacon-wrapped balls with parmesean cheese.

Deep fry.

Does anyone else think this would work?

Are you sure that combo of flavors is tasty together, first of all? I like them all, so I'd be willing to try it, but I think the cheese might melt off. It gets gooey if it's added to food that is too hot. Maybe roll the peanut butter balls in parm cheese, then bacon wrap them?

I'm pretty sure bacon and peanut butter go together, as I've seen people eat PB&B on toast; the flavor of the parm is pretty muted, so I don't think it'll detract (add a bit of saltiness, though). Parmesan is good to act as a fry coat if you want to avoid breading.

My main concern is that the peanut butter would melt during frying. Maybe the balls should be frozen first. . ..

I'd say precook the bacon, cut it into smallish lumps, mix the cheese with the peanut butter and use the bacon as a core. Chill, then batter and fry, so when the pb starts to melt in the oil it'll be contained.

My wife been a vegetarian for more than 20 years. My family makes lots of sides that are veggietarian and we do not put the gravy spoon in to the potatoes. Its simple... She has sweet potatoes, mashed taters, green bean casserole, salad, pie w/ ice cream , biscuits, mom makes enchiladas for her and various chips. There is plenty to go around..

I grew up with the cranberry cylinder too, and I will happily take a serving. Not for lack of culinary knowledge or taste, but for the same reasons as the previous cranberry cylinder fans; family of modest means, that is what we had, nostalgia etc. I'll dive into the cylinder if I am a guest, and nary a complaint will cross my lips. It's called good manners. A very refined lady I knew turned me onto an easy and delicious way to do cranberries nowadays, so that is what I do. A bag of fresh cranberries, an orange or tangerine, a lemon, and a cup of sugar. Put them all through the food processor (skin and all). Let it set a day. Fantastic cranberry relish.

If I am a guest, and the food sucks or is not to my liking (and it has happened) I am gracious and thank my host for having me over. I invite them over and cook next time.
