That's amazing. That'd be a great place to chill after an apocalypse.

At first glance I thought it said "librarian porn". As in hot librarians, which are like kryptonite to me. And then I was mildly disappointed.

2011-11-18 11:48:26 AM
That's not my kind of library porn. Fancy bookshelves never did anything.

For pure book lust, read The Swerve.

/Can a single book really change the world?

There are plenty of candidates, including Lucretius' "On the Nature of Things," and W.W. Norton has reissued Frank O. Copley's translation of this wondrous poem to coincide with Stephen Greenblatt's "The Swerve: How the World Became Modern," an equally wondrous book about how this classic was nearly lost and why Western civilization would be much poorer if that had happened.

I'm heading off to get a new library card in a few minutes so I'm really getting a kick...

Would have done it hours ago but the local branch doesn't open until 11.

They managed to not name the institution, which is Trinity College in Dublin.

Troy: Why does being a librarian make her even hotter?
Abed: They're keepers of knowledge. She holds the answers to all of our questions. Like will you marry me? And, why are there still libraries?
Troy: I want to be a book. She could pick me up, flip through my pages, make sure nobody drew weiners in me.
Abed: Hey maybe if we're too loud she'll shush us [Troy nods]. BOOKS! [Mariah looks at them and they panic].
Troy: Pretend like you're asleep.

Whew.

When I was in high school, I was paid as a intern at the local college library. I found the 'human sexuality' section, and never looked back.

... and I manage to not include the word "final" in my post, as in final institution.

I've been to University of Washington's Suzzallo LIbrary.

Pictures doesn't do it justice!

There's statues that melds with the building. I was going to use carved but I think that implies something was cut away. It's not a relief but more of a statues that becomes the building.

The glass windows had a definite cathedral feel to it and the doorways has a elegant arch to it.

The stairways that goes up to the library, dang, it goes around 4 huge columns.

You're correct; the statues are terra cotta sculptures of great thinkers and artists.

/went to grad school at UW. Spent a lot of time at Suzzallo. Beautiful building.

The library I work at isnt quiet as spectacular but I suggest anyone who does Boston's Freedom Trail to stop by the John Adams Court house and check the building/library out. And you can drop by and say hi.

ahumrmllllrmarguhammmmannn ahhhhh h h .

as one with more books in boxes than on shelves... I would love a library 1/1000 as brilliant as any of these.

/ although, I also love just plain old stacks, like a university library with every book imaginable... and forbidden sections that you need to apply for.

Every plan I've ever had for a dream house has started with a library.

2011-11-18 03:30:29 PM
I've only been to one of these before... the one in Dublin. The thing that I found striking about it was the powerful smell of old books and wooden beams. Cool place.

Then I went out and got stinking drunk on Guiness.

Sister is a librarian, so we usually hit libraries in any city we travel to.

Cybernetic: Every plan I've ever had for a dream house has started with a library.

Yep. I didnt quite manage a true library, but I like my den with the huge bookshelves I have installed.

OMG yes. It was amazing. Suprised no one has mentioned it was the basis for the Jedi Library in the prequel which will not be mentioned.

We spent a couple weeks in Dublin this spring ( with the Queen and POTUS, way to pick the worst week, sis), really enjoyed it. Stayed in a nice apartment down on Cork Street. Seems like a cool place to live.

Thats awesome. One thing Ive always wanted to do if I got rich was build a house with a library/study/leave me the fark alone room. Something similar to that picture would be a good place to start.

Can you imagine the HERPA DERPA meltdown that would occur if someone tried to build as something as grand as the UW library or the Iowa State Law Library on the taxpayers' dime today?

I'm not particularly old-fashioned - in fact, I have quite the gadget collection - but I still prefer books.

Trinity College sells a DVD copy of The Book of Kells. Cost me about $35.
The time one can spend just looking at the panels ---- forgot where I was going with this.
