From an insurance standpoint, it makes a lot of sense. A lot less lawsuits when there are more windows around the priests.

It's much harder to molest your choir boys in a crystal church.

how many meals/medical supplies/clothes could $57M buy?

Are there enough Catholics in Orange County to fill that thing?

Is that the one Homer Simpson dragged his naked ass across while being pulled by a hot air balloon?

Enough holes to fill the Albert Hall!

"The cathedral's administration and the board have really stripped us of our ministry," said a congregant, Bob Canfield, the Register reports. "In the end, it was all about the money. The congregants have lost their ministry."

Wait, you're telling me that a megachurch pastor basically ripped off his parishioners and got wealthy off of them? Oh lawd.

Yeah but think of all the tax revenue all of their conspicuous consumption will generate.

I just hope they post the video of exorcising the place.

I think I know why business went downhill at the Crystal Cathedral in the past few years:

Link (new window)

There's been a few suicides in that building since then, but I'm sure the Catholics will be good enough to remind everyone that anyone who commits suicide aren't saved.

The renovations include enlarging the glory holes in the confessionals.

halfof33: I know this will stun you but while religions do charitable works, that is not all they do.

You're right. They also spend tax free money on elaborate facilities, private jets, clothing, personal vehicles, and other luxury items. Of course they do this because it helps them spread the message to more people...

... and in turn make more tax free money.

My father-in-law insisted on going to Mass when visiting, so I figured we might as well check out the Co-Cathedral in downtown Houston.

Could have fed a lot of poor people with the money it took to build that thing...

halfof33: I know this will stun you but while religions do charitable works, that is not all they do.

Oh, I know. They also do things like encourage people in areas with extremely high rates of HIV to not use condoms, on top of not fulfilling charitable obligations. They're a busy bunch.

I would love to know the value of all of the real estate, gold priceless art, etc the church has sponged up over the last 2000 years. I always envision the whole of Vatican City sitting atop a Scrooge McDuck style money bin.

I've always been sure that Christ would be pleased by multi-million dollar palaces in His name. He was all about the bling, yo.

Remember. Abstaining from sex is the best way to keep from catching HIV. But if you DO catch HIV, you can get rid of it by having sex with a virgin.

/yes, people really believe that.

Yes, they also do other wonderful things with their money, like shuffling pedophilic priests around, funding anti-gay marriage movements, and encouraging Africans to avoid condoms so they won't get AIDS.

So where's that charitable work you mentioned?

Philip Johnson was famously as queer as a three dollar bill, not that there's anything wrong with that. I wonder if Schuller knew this when he hired Johnson to design the Cathedral. If he did, how did reconcile that lifestyle with the Biblical teachings alleged to tell us homosexuality is an abomination? Was Schuller star struck by getting a genius like Johnson to work for him?

My mother adored Schuller and sent him money for the Cathedral - money I should have inherited. I used to tweak her about how the building contained secret homosexual message in its design.

It is nice to know that a non-Christian group is purchasing the church and plans to keep it relatively unmolested in their converting it to a place of pagan worship.

Doesn't include Catholic Hospital Systems, individual Religious Orders, and several others.

With as much money as the Church makes, they should be #1, and not any lower.

Jesus Christ wasn't big on the whole "worldly possessions" thing. Funny how much of what their founder taught was quickly lost on them.

2011-11-18 01:17:10 PM
People need to stop living for a life that they think exists and start living a life they know exists.
