This was kind of sad:

In 1951, legendary Brown Bomber Joe Louis was well past his prime but couldn't quit because he owed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the IRS. Rising heavyweight contender Rocky Marciano didn't want to fight his idol, now outmatched.

Nonetheless, the two boxers signed contracts for an October bout. Marciano went on to win what would be Louis' last professional fight, apologizing to the former champ after knocking him out.

Well, duh, subby. Peter Norman is white. How dare you even imply that whites have ever played any role in civil rights. He only pinned on a symbol of white guilt - didn't mean shiat.

/Tired of that picture. Really.
//If they really wanted to protest the US, they should never have put on its uniform.

He considered doing the salute with them, but decided that it would not help their cause as much as letting them have the spotlight would. So he went with the badge instead.

How tired of it can you be? You spent at least a couple of minutes crying about it, wanker.

Some folks might think that moral and smooth but, thankfully, there are those who don't surrender their principles to manipulative discouragement.

What is less known is that Norman, a white Australian, donned a badge on the podium in support of their cause, the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR). After the race, Carlos and Smith told Norman what they were planning to do during the ceremony. As Flanagan wrote: "They asked Norman if he believed in human rights. He said he did. They asked him if he believed in God. Norman, who came from a Salvation Army background, said he believed strongly in God. "We knew that what we were going to do was far greater than any athletic feat. He said, 'I'll stand with you'." Carlos said he expected to see fear in Norman's eyes. He didn't. "I saw love.[5] On the way out to the medal ceremony, Norman saw the badge being worn by Paul Hoffman, a white member of the US Rowing Team, and asked him if he could wear it.[6] It was also Norman who suggested that Smith and Carlos share the black gloves used in their salute, after Carlos left his gloves in the Olympic Village.[7] This is the reason for Tommie Smith raising his right fist, while John Carlos raised his left.

Australia's Olympic authorities reprimanded him and the Australian media ostracised him; Norman was also banned for two years on his return. Despite Norman running qualifying times for the 100m five times and 200m 13 times during 1971/72, the Australian Olympic track team did not send him, or any other male sprinters, to the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, the first modern Olympics since 1896 where no Australian sprinters participated.[6]

it is not that forgotten. We hear about Flanagan now anytime that moment is written about.
The press made a big deal out of the story when Flanagan died... but it is still a cool story.

Which of those two options do you think would have had the greater impact?

I have that poster on my wall, and no, he is not forgotten.

What pisses me off was the IOC's blasé horseshiat about political statements being out of place at the games. Oh yeah? Well then send all those Hungarians back, motherfarkers. And it's a good thing the Mexicans machine-gunning college kids wasn't a "political statement". Oh, and could you maybe let Jimmy Carter know about this, too? Too late you say? Well then farking choke yourselves to death on all your bribe money.
Scumbags.

Defending your country for its own sake, in the face of its mistakes, is Nationalism. Nationalism is ugly.

Wishing for your country to be a better place, and taking steps to make it better, is Patriotism. Patriotism is beautiful.

You have cornered the thread's market in assholism already.

Yeah, what he said.

And what if its "uniform" happened to be white skin?

I thought the same thing. It was from 1961 too, so they couldn't not have known what that looked like...

She actually had a website up until a couple of years ago (originalskatebetty ?) and it had video of her on Mike Douglas and a commercial she shot.

She was one of the first to do a decent looking handstand, and that trick is still done by quite a few guys and gals.

I know WAY too much about early 60's skate and surf culture for a 40something fom Oregon.

On the other hand, it also wouldn't have gotten any media attention to their cause.

I think the fact that you idiots are talking about this proves them right for doing it... when is the last time you were part of an iconic moment in sports history.

Oh, Peter Norman was briefed by Smith and Carlos well before the podium (it wasn't just the salute, it was also the beads around their necks and going barefoot to signify slavery, so he knew something was up), and was every bit in favor of it.

The reason why he didn't put up his fist also was because, well.... that would just look silly. And almost patronizing. Standing there in quiet solidarity and not co-opting the black power salute is the only correct and respectable thing a white man can do in that situation.
