That's some freaky shiat right there. I was almost expecting a hunting human game thing. Not far off.

No shiat. I thought I was reading Deliverance.

The same thing happened to me when I showed up for my first day at that sex farm.

My thoughts too. Then I got the notion of John Muhammad and Lee Malvo. What would these guys do next? wow!

Reminds me of the movie Breakdown a little. Scary idea. Adding the kid makes it a little bit like the DC Sniper killings.

Fark yeah Ohio

The crime notwithstanding, the craigslist ad was terribly misleading. The two men were hired as laborers on a farm, yet the employer had little or nothing for them to do. Considering how far the two traveled for the job, he could've at least made them dig their own graves.

2011-11-18 11:32:03 AM
Wow. that's Messed Up.

The older dude needs to go away forever. I hope the younger one can be salvaged, but I fear he can't. No normal person could do those things.

I'm not sure what it says about me that I end up reading local news on fark before I read it in the local news...

/hadn't heard about this at all until just now and I live in the area.

The guy who survived is lucky he immediately hit the gun away and ran. Imagine how many people would have just stood there staring at the gun asking "uh.. whats going on?" thinking worst case it was a normal robbery, and not the murdery kind.

/Which is why you dont just do whatever the robber wants.

"Go to to where the jobs are," Fark told me. "Go work on a farm instead of whining," they said.

Well, now I'm not only broke and unemployed, I'm also traumatized and dealing with a gunshot wound with no friggin' insurance.

Thanks, assholes.

I always thought those two got caught because they didn't move out of the general D.C. area. If they had moved around the country doing what they did then it could have been years, (if ever), before anyone made the connection.

And if this guy had been killed, how many more possible victims they may have had.

Didn't Belle Gunness (new window) run much the same scheme, only promising wealth via marriage instead of work?

Law enforcement wasn't much to speak of back then, but I would've thought after the first 40 or so people vanished within a small area, that it might have raised someone's suspicions...

Pretty much. On top of that, one man actually ESCAPED after seeing Gunness standing over him with a knife! And the police STILL didn't investigate until after she had faked her own death.

Of course. Murdering lonely men is one thing, but they just weren't going to stand for someone faking their own deaths. That was right out.

Something doesn't make sense here. This guy escaped on Nov. 6, but the police didn't investigate until someone else was reported missing five days later?

2011-11-18 11:56:07 AM
Scary shnit indeed. Rednecks barely living on the grid, miles and miles of rural places where nobody ever goes. With all the "missing persons" there's gotta be hundreds of murders going unnoticed everywhere.

That's the last thing I expected to happen in Licking County.

/seriously?

2011-11-18 12:03:43 PM
Ohio.

Serial Killer Capital of the USA

Neal Bradley Long and Charles Manson were both born and raised in Ohio. Then there is Jeffrey Dahmer, Larry Ralston, Thomas Dillon, Michael Swango, Gary & Thaddeus Lewingdon, Alton Coleman & Debra Brown, Moreland Family Juvenile Baby Killer, Eric Elliott & Lewis Gilbert, and the Cleveland Torso Murderer (who has never been caught and probably never will be given that his crimes were committed so long ago that he likely dead already.) Terry Shepard is suspected of being a serial killer. Now there is Anthony Sowell who is wanted on assault and rape charges -when police went to his house to arrest him, they discovered 6 bodies in various stages of decomposition hidden in and around his house and yard.

First thing I thought when I heard "gullible." If you'd just hit him with your bootstraps, you'd be fine now! Real workers don't mind being shot at, it's just part of the job.

It's a farm. The men who answered the ad were needed as fertilizer.

Reminds me of the Sheila LaBarre case. Hire young men to work on the farm, seduce them, kill them.

matt the cat: Scary shnit indeed. Rednecks barely living on the grid, miles and miles of rural places where nobody ever goes. With all the "missing persons" there's gotta be hundreds of murders going unnoticed everywhere.

I can tell you that you are completely correct. I lived in a very rural, very hick town in AR - not nearly as backwater and off-the-grid as some places, but still. A decade or so before I was born, there were serious family/drug wars in the area. Two clans of sorts were both selling drugs, and they started having clashes.

My father was friends with someone who was on the outskirts of the conflict. The guy was always strapped with a pistol and would draw it whenever anyone drove up. One family had a man get blown away at their dinner table by a shotgun blast through the window. People on both sides disappeared.

Not a single arrest was made. Our singular law enforcement officer, the local sheriff, understandably did not get involved or even investigate.

Of course, both sides were murderous drug pushers, so I don't really shed tears for them, but it's still pretty scary the stuff that can go out when you're far enough from civilization.

Reminded me of the movie Red State a little. Crazy shiat!!!!! Instead of sex it was work. Instead of being religious, they were just the blacks!

I like the part where they had breakfast with the guy first. Do you think they picked up the bill?

"He said he saw the house all lit up and thought it looked like a friendly place," said a woman who answered the door yesterday at the residence where the man sought help. She would not give her name because she said she was still shaken by the incident."

Dude has clearly never seen a horror movie...

Has there ever been a legitimate ad on Craigslist? You hear something about an ad on there at least every couple of weeks where something is hinky/off/illeagle about a Craigslist offering. Answering an ad from there seems to be the new version of Russian Roulette(sp).

Never been on the site, sure as hell don't plan to in the future.

Glad they caught these asshats, and with help from the FBI hopefully they can find out if there are any other victims and/or perps.

We've gone to many a farm/ranch looking for a job, but all were recomendations from friends or family so we weren't just blindly wandering into a totally unknown situation with complete strangers in hells back pasture.

There's a whole job market in the making; Craigslist investigation.

More recently, in Missouri, you had Ray Copeland (new window), who lured men to their cattle farm to kill them after committing fraud. Closer to the scene of this crime, you had Thomas Dillon (new window).

I just wanted to point out the completely relevant fact that 688 acres is nowhere near enough land to run a "cattle farm", much less one that is large enough to have full-time hired help. You city boys sure are dumb!!

Americans aren't afraid of hard work, after all. Once again, an employer was attempting to exploit the fruits of their past labor.

I agree and have experienced similar things. I posted some of my experiences from living in Siskiyou County (CA) in another thread and people unanimously responded saying I was making it up. But there are lots of unincorporated rural areas that contain a mix of dangerous dudes: loner miners, paranoid loners, tough-guy ranchers, and criminals escaping from the big city or who are operating meth labs and grow operations. I guarantee that if you wander around in many mountain parts of California that you'll be shot at by some paranoid loner or some criminal hiding out or protecting their crop. Most of the time they are warning shots, but still is a scary reality of being remote -- if they did shoot to kill you'd simply disappear.

I think when people think of rural communities they tend to think of some cute, well organized, town with a nice Main Street and friendly people, but there are lots of weird unincorporated communities that nestle along remote rivers and out-of-the way roads, that aren't really even communities but just an occasional dwelling filled by anti-social types.

A county judge has just issued a gag order. No reason why.

I hate these rural officials. I dreaded dealing with them when I worked at the law firm. They act like they're the king of the county.
