tigerose: Sounds to me like Slim would be honoured if you would get thee to the shelter. Sat down upon the floor and let the love flow over you, until a furline should choose you. I know that Eli the Bitey chose our boy.. Came out of the cage, licked his nose..and I was fillin out the paper work..returned? We'll fix it. We know catz.

I'll be doing it, believe me... as soon as I'm sufficiently on top of my finances again to not feel like I'm being irresponsible. When I took my two great feline loves on, I was in a much better place than I was now, and I'm not adopting another cat until I know I can cover whatever vet bills may arise.

How I'll endure that is a whole other situation.

Dear God.

Dayglo Brown, gglibertine, and James72, I am so, so, so sorry to hear about the untimely (it's always untimely, no?) loss of your beautiful, perfect, sweet kitties. :,(
Words fail me.

Wishing all of you the strength you need to get through. You've come to the right place. *Hugs*

Dayglo Brown: I want to say thanks everybody for cheering me up.

Yesterday I brought Noodles in to the Vet to be put down.
She was 13 or 14 years old (8 of them in my family)
Her health was deteriorating fast, losing a lot of weight and she couldn't hold it long enough to get to the litterbox anymore.

I was a bawling wreck the rest of the day. Today I'm feeling a bit better, but still wishing she'd come lick my hand.

Noodles was so very beautiful and obviously a well loved family member. I am so sorry for your loss, and also glad that you have the other beautiful kitties to cuddle while the hole in your heart slowly heals. Purrs are such magical healing things. Take care

James72: I wish I had better news.

Bernard (my Siberan Forest Cat) was born February 20, 2011.
He was diagnosed with Effusive FIP on October 15, 2011.
He survived only 34 days after that.
He passed away today, November 19th, 2011 at 5:06pm eastern.

[farm6.staticflickr.com image 640x480]

He was started on prednisone and clavamox immediately after diagnosis.
Because he seemed to be doing so well, we started him on vitamin supplements and Interferon about 14 days afterwards.

He was stable for 31 days. Things took a turn for the worse very quickly. He had a housecall checkup on wednesday. I noticed he was wheezing slightly after giving him his meds on wednesday night. Thursday morning, I noticed it it again. After speaking to the vet several times that day, I was advised to avoid syringe feeding him right after giving him his pills, to wait an hour or so. Still he wheezed, yet I often saw him rolling on his back (which he wouldn't do if he had fluid building up in his abdomen or chest). Friday, I took him in for x-rays. He did not have fluid buildup, but he seemed to be building up a tolerance to the prednisone, and his organs were becoming enlarge or inflammed. He was wheezing due to pulmonary edema due to inflammation. They gave him a shot of Lasix and sent me home with some to give him. The Lasix was ineffective, and he got much much worse today. I did not want him to suffer and he was getting close to going into distress.

It was one of the hardest choices I ever had to make. And even though he was in my life for only a short while, he was my best friend.
I miss Bernard already. He was such a good boy.

His videos: Link (new window)

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear about Bernard. He was only with you a short time, but I could see by the way you talked about him that he was a remarkable fellow and very well loved. He was lucky to have such a caring person like you as his very own person.

professional_vampire: tigerose: I am making chicken in red wine sauce, with spuds, carrots, peas and proscuitto ham. Any one want a serving?

Full from dinner, so no thanks. :-P

Could use some suggestions on what to make for my annual b'day party/excuse to use my good china 2 weeks from tomorrow. Don't want to make turkey since the party's not long after Thanksgiving, can't make ham since it's not long until Christmas, can't make lasagna since I had that last year. Any ideas?

And a cat to make up for the threadjack...

I found an amazing recipe for a pork tenderloin roast a few months ago and the flavors are absolutely the best I have ever experienced.

Link (new window)

The glaze has lingonberry jam or sauce and balsamic vinegar in it and the flavors are incredible. I found the lingonberry sauce at a Cost Plus World Market. They also had a lingonberry jam, but I tried it with the lingonberry sauce. I have served this with seasoned roasted fingerling potatoes and a salad, or fresh vegetable.

LadyMech: Is Caturday still going on? I need advice. Okay, so about 4 monthes ago we got adopted by a malti-poo (or as I like to call her, a floofy mutt) who ended up jumping into my mother's car. Twice. Looked for an owner, but no go. We've named her Candy.
So once decided to keep her, we then had to shave her down to the skin due to all the knots. That poodlely fur hid a bunch of them, most between her armpits. They were actually pulling the skin and stopping her from being able to move freely. After the shaving she was finally able to fully move her legs. She's a lover girl, but she's very very clingy. Obvious abandonment issues. I think she would be happy to surgically attached me.

And we cannot get her to eat at the same time as the other dogs. We separate everyone (we have 2 other) but she won't eat when the others are fed. We have her bowl in a gated area, and she waits until almost everyone is in bed for the night and then she will crawl under the gate and eat.

So Farkers, what can I do to help her? She plays with the other dogs like their annoying kid sister, but there's no problem with them. Oh, and by the way, a co-worker found a stray cat-who then had a litter. And now my mother wants to take one. If we do, we'll segregate the house into dog and cat zones at first, but what else can we do? And heaven help me, but I was wondering if it would be better to get two kittens so they have each to play with. Advice please? It's been years since I had a cat.

------

If Candy had to compete with other strays for food, she probably has major issues about eating around other dogs. She will want to (a) wait for the other two dogs to finish eating so she can have a crack at any scraps they leave in their dishes, after they've gone, so as not to risk a fight; and (b) eat her own food when she is 100% sure no other dogs are around, so no dog (or anyone) can steal it from her or try to fight her for it.

It may take her months to realize that she has a consistent, safe, reliable food source. I think you're doing the right thing by feeding her in a separate location until she can relax a little more. Try letting the first two dogs eat their fill while Candy is in her gated area, then one person can take those two to play outside or for a walk, while the other one gives Candy her food, with the gate to her room open, then sits quietly somewhere else in the house. Hopefully Candy will then realize she's alone and thus safe, and take the opportunity to explore the other dogs' empty dishes to her satisfaction, then go ahead and eat hers in peace.

If she buys into this, try giving Candy her food at the same time as the other dogs, but in her area with the gate closed. She'll probably expect to wait until the other dogs are finished, and once they have, if she's not already eating her own food, open her gate after the other dogs have left so she can check out their empty dishes to make sure nothing's wasted. In the wild the alpha canine eats his fill first, the other adults after him, and finally the children and/or the lowest status canines get whatever's left. As long as your other dogs don't "save" food in their dishes to eat later, they probably won't care if Candy licks up what they leave behind. But I would supervise until you're absolutely certain they won't bother her.

Hopefully, eventually Candy will realize that her food is hers and the other dogs aren't going to fight her for it, and she'll also learn that no matter what happens she'll get her chance to check out their dishes once they're done. Once she is confident of these two things, hopefully she'll just start to eat as soon as she's given her food. And once all the dogs have totally finished all their food to everyone's satisfaction, take all of the dishes away until the next mealtime.

She might always need to eat in a different room than your other dogs do, but with time and patience, you never know what might happen. My two dogs, each with their own rescue dog "food issues", have lived together with me for over 6 years, but I still have to feed them at opposite ends of the kitchen or they will fight. Not cool since Sarah is 1/3 the size of Buddy, and has no teeth, so even if she wanted to put Buddy in his place, she couldn't. :S But it's a huge improvement from having to hand-feed Sarah every meal, in her bed, while Buddy eats in the kitchen, which I had to do for nearly a year before she got brave enough to try eating in the kitchen too.

Anyway sorry if this is tl;dr but if you read it all I hope it helps. Sorry I don't have much advice on integrating cats into the household, except for making sure there's always someplace safe that the cat can get to but the dogs can't reach. Good on you for rescuing Candy, she sounds like a real cutie who wants to be your ultimate BFF and I cannot wait to see some pics. :)

Mah doodz (Buddy on the left, Sarah on the right the night after the dentist took out the last of her teeth):

Timid Goddess: akimbotoo: Timid Goddess: akimbotoo: syzygy whizz: akimbotoo: Here is a picture of Sexy Sadie (the floozie) feral momma kitty I have been trying to catch for over 2 years with her 2 newest babies (#18 & #19). The babies are about 3 months old or so and she is nursing them before they take turns eating the food I leave out for them. They are a tuxedo and a black tabby, just like the two I found when they were a week or so old. Those two were taken to the lady who does the bottle feeding for the local no-kill shelter. I am going to try catching these two and momma next week when the weather warms up a tiny bit. I don't want to be trying to catch them when the temperatures are in the teens at night. Plus we are supposed to get snow tonight and tomorrow.

[i51.tinypic.com image 639x479]

Sadie is keeping her eye on me peeking out the window. She is such a cautious girl, and a great momma. I really do need to stop this baby factory. Can you imagine how many more babies there would be on this block if I hadn't caught all of these little ones?

I've heard from some of the angels-disguised-as-humans who do TNR that original recipe KFC is almost foolproof as bait for hungry feral kitties..

Yeah, that is how I caught two toms this year. I am going to start baiting a trap at each entrance with KFC on Monday. Hopefully it will be a bit warmer and not snowing.

Just a thought, but what if you enclosed the trap so it was a nice, cozy, insulated den? Combined with the chicken, of course.

That is a good idea. I have been covering the trap with a vinyl tablecloth to keep any wind and rain out, but should try a quilted moving blanket over that for the colder weather. Thanks!

One of the feral males I caught actually shredded a whole vinyl table cloth into pieces no larger than 2" by 2" and they were inside the trap with him. He was scary. He was probably the baby-daddy of at least one of the litters.

Just seems queens especially would be looking for nice cozy dens for her kittens and herself.

That is so very true! Unfortunately, she has claimed a nice cozy den for herself and her many litters of kittens under the back deck at my office. I knew that rock chucks (yellow bellied marmots) had made a den under there, but then the kittens started appearing too. I also discovered that there is now a passage way from under the deck to under the 80 year old house because I found two crying 1 week old kittens just inside one of the crawl space air vents. I say crawl space, but on that side of the house there is only about a 10" to 12" space between the floor joists and the dirt.

I actually trapped Momma Cat last year, but she broke my trap escaping from it. My husband had to re-solder some of the joints. She is very smart and resourceful too.

I seem to recall a several Farkers saying that they trained their cats to accept a carrier by leaving it open. Which makes me think something along the line of a live-trap sized non-trap that is insulated and under the house near her current den. Wait a week or so before switching for the real trap. Perhaps then she would be partially comfortable and not freak out, and break out, of the trap?

Keep tripping over akimbotoo's recipe(s) & mention of lingonberry sauce & jam getting back down to The Posting Box. That hollers Scandahoovia again, like Saint Lucia & the worn candle wreath in Haruko_'s Christmas art, back in the daylight. Kept thinking Ikea also does lingonberry goo, & a fast consult of the pantry reminds me that they do. Preserves for sure!
