Seeing this sort of thing makes me wonder... Do I want to shoot her in the head for buying into the retailer's Black Friday crap, or do I want to shoot myself in the head because our hyper-consumer society is doomed...

2011-11-17 08:05:11 PM
Wow. Priorities.

If she wanted a Black Friday so badly, she could have came to my house.

having worked at best buy for nearly 10 years i can't see why this is news. some years were bad.

the worst was the release of the xbox 360. people were there for almost 2 and a half weeks. even after it was out. the wii was the next worst as far as people camping. mind you those were not on black friday. the whole friday thing and people who shop that day is just pure batshiat. i don't care what it is i am not ever shopping on that day.

What's tragic is that anyone covers these materialistic douches. It encourages them.

2011-11-17 08:18:53 PM
There's stupid.

There's "Camp out for 'Black Friday' because the stores won't have anything shipped on Saturday" stupid.

Then there's this, which deserves immediate euthanasia as too stupid to live.

I suppose dumbass is implied with the Florida tag. Carry on.

How much is Best Buy paying her?

So standing in line for 9 days to save $50 is a good idea? Let's do the math. Assuming she makes a minimum wage (because someone this stupid couldn't possibly make more) of $8/hour, she's spending $1728 (9*24*8) to save that $50.

2011-11-17 08:45:36 PM
Over the next nine days, I'm going to encourage my daughter to walk more (first steps today! 16 total), meet my sister and brother in law, and welcome my dad home after a long week of trucking. I'm going to finish the Turkey Day decor, and feed my visiting family good meals. I'm traveling with my family to see distant relatives that I haven't seen since I was 9. When I get home, I have my girl's first birthday and Christmas to prepare for.

Lady, listen to me: It's not worth it, whatever you're camping out for. These two months are specifically for celerating with family and friends. They will appreciate and love you more for being there than for being away from them to camp out for an item that they will grow tired of fast.

Please, lady, it's not too late. Go to them and spend time with them.

I'm in line behind her now. She's not crazy. Me? I'm actually in line for 2012, the deals are gonna be off the hee-zee!

Fark you, dickwad. I celebrate Thanksgiving in November and then Christmas in Decemer, which makes it (gasp!) two months out of 12!

But, please, enlighten me on how my family's use of these two holidays to gather and celebrate makes us "part of the problem."

Yes, because the cost opportunity of her standing in line is that she doesn't get to work twenty four hours a day for nine days straight.

I'd make a witty comment on Consumerist but they only allow comments from the same 15 people. Everyone else gets denied.

What the hell happened to that craptastic site?

she's probably part time, which means she works 3-5 days a week for anywhere from 4-5 hours a shift. so in reality, it'd be more like 200 bucks before taxes

One of my wife's friends is a "huge OWS supporter" and "hates corporate greed". Then she posts on FB slamming retail workers who want a day off, and some shiat about how the economy "needs us to spend more" (right after her post about getting ready for black friday shopping). She really doesn't see the disconnect.

Ha. Sorry. That was totally harsh. Sounds like you have a nice philosophy - I like the 9 days idea. Think of the things you'll accomplish, the experiences you're looking forward to. You're right - what you've got going is worth far more than saving a few dollars on some stupid tv or a laptop. I guess I just go totally off the rails when someone mentions that for 2 months out of every year - one sixth of my life, I'm expected to shut up and play along with the mostly false urgency of the holiday season. The irritating, repetitive songs, decorations everywhere starting the week before halloween, rampant consumerism, news stories about consumerism, guilt trips for shopping too early, for shopping too late, all that nonsense. I guess the thing is, I see my family plenty throughout the year, and and am generous to them as well. I just don't like the forced nature of the whole thing. Not for two months, especially. That's way too much time. Hell, I see people all year long - I don't get why one particular day means more than any other day. I know.. tradition, right? And the Coca-Cola Company. And Jesus. And America.

But then I've got plenty of reasons to hate the holidays. It sounds like you like them, so carry on. I think we're probably on the same side, I'm just sort of reactionary where the holidays are concerned. Nothing good has ever happened to me in December, not since I was a kid. Anyway, good luck to ya, and hiya buddy..

You want to see absolute chaos? Have those people show up on Black Friday. Not at midnight, but just sometime during the morning when anyone can come in without waiting in line.

2011-11-17 11:36:16 PM
I'm pretty sure last year I heard Best Buy gave the first person in line some sort of prize, but I'm not inclined to search for it. Still not enough to wait that long.

Personally, I'm encouraging people to boycott the early sales in order to show the retailers that they're just being INSANE now. 6 years retail, 8 total at the mall (first two were food court but still sorta count), and the only three days off a year that (almost) everyone could count on were Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Fark the retailers messing with a family oriented national holiday, if they can't figure out ways to keep sales up they shouldn't be in business... much like my former employer, Circuit City.

ladyfortuna: Personally, I'm encouraging people to boycott the early sales in order to show the retailers that they're just being INSANE now

Yes.

I have around 12 years in retail over the years. Most recently, I was a store manager at a moderately sized retailer. In my year and a half, I saw a rapid downward-spiral in the organization. My store, usually, was closed two days a year, Easter and Christmas. This year, they cancelled everyone's Easter the Wednesday before the holiday (and reduced payroll to make room for the extra hours). Actually, "holiday" is a misnomer since they took away associate's holiday pay the very same week (what a coincidence). I also witnessed the end of 401k contributions, restructuring of sick time, vacation time, insurance, and management bonuses. I could go on about the 20% decrease in payroll (by dollar amount, encouraging an increased turnover) while the store was running profit at 10% comp positive and similar subjects but whatever...

Fortunately, I had a backup plan. I wasn't locked into that situation. I did it largely because I enjoyed helping people. That couldn't outweigh the suckfest that it became. I feel bad for those that remain.

I feel bad for everyone that's stuck in a retail position at this time. It's not going to get any better.

For extra lulz, she's also a Wiccan. The only good news is that she married someone as stupidly stubborn as she is, except he's stubborn about different shiat. So, they argue all the time, because they both have to get the last word.
