Of course welfare encourages teat suckling. If the only jobs you can get are fast food or minimum wage, you have to work your ass off just to get a pittance and still have mountains of debt. Or, you can go on welfare and still have, an albeit smaller, pittance, but you don't have to do jack shiat.

The problem is caused by both sides. Provide incentive (somehow) for businesses to hire more people, and for higher wages. Then lower the amount you can get on welfare, and suddenly people will be a lot less lazy.

Where is the conservative outrage over government spending on babies sucking on mommy's bazoombas?

Real Republicans don't suck on "bazoombas". that"s the "devils" playground.

Higher wages and more employment opportunity are all that is needed. Welfare is already a pittance.

if i was a broad i'd love to have somebody, anybody suckin' the moo juice outta my titties. they have spontaneous orgasms n' sh(t.

i was thinkin about it just tonight...every woman starts her period at x years, say 12 or you know, it varies as the species evolves ... but x 12 x til menopause, say 60, 12x12=144x48=6912...and further more, more than one of those periods can be fertilized and then the cycle repeats if it's a girl or if it's a boy...

guys blow away about A BAZZILLION half-persons a year into a wad of tissues, times 3,500 million people on planet earth...

Don't forget to factor in impacts on costs of pediatric care which I bet helps the net impact on the budget from this.

As much as I personally support the idea of breastfeeding education, I'm highly dubious that any program was able to increase the behavior by over 70% in a 16 year period. Culture just doesn't change that quickly.

Note that the percentages in the article were for WIC families only and not the general population. If you're on WIC there's strong incentive to save every penny you can because you wouldn't be on WIC if you weren't farking broke. I could see a targeted education campaign pointing making a jump from 30% to 50% over 16 years - that's just 1.25% per year. Given that breastfeeding rated are going up in the general population as well (albeit not as rapidly) it doesn't seem entirely implausible.

/Love the boobies

Nearly a year and still BF.

TN WIC does not support BF mothers after one year. You can still get toddler vouchers. The vouchers for women, even if BF, stops at 1 year.

So what you are saying is that these moms cannot resist the advertising over medical/nutritional advise? Maybe they are too stupid to be allowed to breed. Is the function of the Federal government to protect them form their own stupidity? Does government really have enough money to do that?

If the state of PA wants to waste taxpayer money on this fine but this is not a way to spend Federal dollars.

The mother too. Breastfeeding is a great way to get rid of the baby weight and get back to a healthier size. After a year my wife is now lighter than she was before getting pregnant.

Breast feeding is so important. It makes kids smarter and healthier.

I breastfed all three kids for over a year - not sure how long after that, but probably less than two years. It's not about doing what you feel like doing, it's about doing what you should do, if at all possible. Just make sure you're eating healthily yourself, so your little munchkin gets a high-quality diet, too! And breast milk is all they need, for quite a long time (look it up to make sure how long). So it's less expensive, more convenient, and will improve mother-child bonding. A win-win all around!

hasty ambush: "If the state of PA wants to waste taxpayer money on this fine but this is not a way to spend Federal dollars."

First, WIC is a Federal program. So it absolutely is, and should be, up to the Federal government to determine how the program's money is spent.
Unless you're advocating the end of WIC itself? Feel free to clarify.

Second, If a government is providing a choice between two services it knows to be unequal, how is it at all bad to educate users about the science? Are you really advocating that the government withhold information or provide advertising funds equally to States that achieve unequal outcomes with it? You'd just be *asking* for graft if you handed States equal funds for educational material regardless of whether those funds ever translated into outcomes.

I need to get a grant to promote whacking off, since whacking off is supposed to lower your risk of prostate cancer. Remember to tell your kids to whack off, its for their own good.

/Public advertising coming soon.

My wife did the same. By our sons 1st birthday, she was slimmer than she was even before we married. Come to think of it, that's probably why we had another child.

I still meet people that think formula is better than breast milk. I call these people... uninformed. Seriously, breast feeding is like having your cars oil changed and the engine tuned up by the engineers that designed it. It's how I explain it to people. I love seeing that little light bulb blink over their heads.

(note: I am not bashing formula. Formula has saved the lives of countless babies who didn't have access to their mothers)

I agree with this 1000%. Mother's milk is for babies, cows milk is for calves, and infant formula is for corporate profit$.

My daughter had trouble producing enough milk for her son, I gave her fenugreek, and had her drink tea made with fennel and anise, all of which are excellent Galactagogues. Problem solved.

My mom's a lactation consultant. She gets to sit there and play with boobs all day long, teaching new mothers how to breastfeed. Go ahead boys, now tell me that breast-feeding ain't a wonderful thing.
