I honestly had no idea the Russians were so homophobic.

That said, this is an odd photo:

Ugh. My boyfriend is Russian and can't be out because of this sort of crap. And he can't move here (to the US) because my own government is still anti-gay in its marriage/immigration laws as well. Yet if I were Canadian this would not be an issue...land of freedom and equality, indeed.

There are a few gay guys in the company I work for. One does venture out to gay bars every once in a while, but the others have just decided its easier and safer to remain celibate while they are here, and they only tell the other foreigners that they are gay. However, this is Moscow, which has less right-wing extremism than Petersburg, so I honestly don't know how much trouble they could get themselves into.

Back-asswards country with a history of authoritarianism? I'd be surprised if they weren't a pack of homophobes.

Sad.

It was 2003, or 2002 anyway right before we invaded Iraq. A friend of a friend that was from Yemen had to leave the US and the worst part was he was gay and his father was going to make him marry some girl. I never understood why he couldn't stand up to his father but well politics made sure he couldn't do it from here: (

This bill is rather ambiguous and seems aimed at keeping gay people off the streets, anyone who committed "public acts" promoting homosexuality, bisexuality or transgender identity to minors...

Kids these days just have no attention span, what with their video games and internet. It's just getting harder and harder to push the gay agenda the old-fashioned way. I keep saying we should start one of those internet websites. Only one that traps kids and makes them gay. (like Fark)

To me it looks like the guy on the left ran up and did a running face punch to the sign holder, and everyone else is looking stunned, like that moment just before you get run over, you see it coming, but your too slow to get out of the way, so you just stand there with a stupid look on your face...

Guy on far left is homophobe attacking group, he is throwing a punch and is most of the way through the swing. The person he's aiming at turned away and ducked, so you're seeing him from behind. The person with the awkward stance is just reacting to the sudden violence, he's getting into a better position to fight or flee. The pregnant man is just at an odd angle.

Wat.

Never been to Russia, but I've always heard they're fairly homophobic and even more racist. If you aren't a straight white male, they aren't a big fan. Then again, the country in general seems like a toilet.

Totally agree, those straights should take their wedding rings off in public, stop showing pictures off of their spouses at work, and not show any form of public affection (holding hands, peck on the cheeck, etc.) These things make a homo like me uncomfortable. Stop shoving our heterosexuality down my throat. It is a strange and unnatural concept for me.

It all depends - but my general rule is that unless I'm in London or Amsterdam (which isn't as open as you would think either) - I typically keep my sexuality to myself. Fly into the country, do the work, deal with bad dinners hosted by the company paying me and even worse female strip clubs that my host insists on going to, and get the hell out.

/although in Tokyo - I'll fake an illness to get away from my host for a night and head into Shinjuku Ni-chōme - which is quite fun

No surprise. At MIT Sloan School of Management some Russian grad student freaked out when he got an email about a gay MIT student event and proceeded to spam the email lists ranting about how in his country gay would be killed, etc.

For some strange reason he was not expelled or suspended.

If the bill passes it "will spoil the reputation not only of Russia but of Saint Petersburg as a European city," according to Igor Kochetkov of the city's LGBT Network rights group.

He's absolutely right. Based on the article and this thread alone it would seem to me that Russia still sadly has a long way to go before joining European civilisation.

Yeah, their gov's tolerant of some pretty nasty stuff. Russian immigrants have also been involved in some pretty brutal gay-bashing incidents along the West Coast in the last decade, though those cases seem to be partially motivated by membership in a rather extreme Pentecostal movement as well.

Well, most of them drink themselves to death before they reach the age of 30, so there's that.

2011-11-18 10:02:19 AM
So, Russia has its own version of the Republican Party, I see. I'd say that, hey, if Russia were still Communist, they wouldn't be allowing religion or religious "excuses" to hate on gays; but people being people, they'd find a different excuse, intstead.

Believe it or not, Canada does have a few immigration laws of their own. It MIGHT be possible, but it's definitely not just a simple matter of moving there. Otherwise, I really love Toronto and would be perfectly fine with that.

Russia is such a bleak place, no one wants to have children. There are more abortions than live births there. The country doesn't have the luxury of allowing an "I Gotta Be Me" attitude for people who won't help repopulate.

If you are the leader of a country in which people X are routinely oppressed, if you are "neutral" regarding X, you are basically against them.

True, but at least he's not proactively fighting them. He's insanely powerful and it's fortunate he's not so much of a "typical" Russian.
