Identity theft?
Fraud on the part of a BofA manager in Florida?

I'm sure it's like John Smith in their native tongue.

Was the branch in Greece? Konstantinos Alexopoulos is Greece's John Smith.

2011-11-17 09:36:10 PM
So that's why the Greek economy is in the crapper now.

2011-11-17 09:40:27 PM
Actually sounds kinda plausible. Lots of Greek immigrants in the US.

2011-11-17 09:41:57 PM
Fake story. Since when do Greeks have savings accounts?

2011-11-17 09:43:21 PM
People still have accounts at Bank of America?

Eh, they're all Greek to me.

There will be a $1500 return of your money fee.

Easy mistake. I know at least 27 guys with that same name.

2011-11-17 10:02:12 PM
I can see how this could happen.

If "John Smith" walks in and asks for his money, there are like a billion of them, so you check the account number.

When "Konstantinos Alexopoulos" walks in and asks for his money, you LOL, and say, "No, seriously, what's your name?" And when he tells you that is his real name, you say, "Oops, sorry," and look up the name in the computer, and then go get his money.

2011-11-17 10:02:19 PM
A couple of items of info lacking from the story that would have really made things clearer: was the older Konstantinos Alexopoulos related in any way to the younger Konstantinos Alexopoulos, and is the older one still alive?

I can see the bank making the claimed mistake - maybe - but considering how hard it is to get money out of banks in most cases, I can't see BofA finding the older guy and volunteering to give the money to him...

On the other hand, it would be a pretty solid scam - have your old uncle with the same name collect the money, then after he dies, go to the bank and ask where your money is.

2011-11-17 10:02:30 PM
More like, this guy must be legit, how many people with the name Konstantinos Alexopoulos can there be in the US anyway?

2011-11-17 10:04:01 PM
take the bad account and spray some Windex on it, that should fix the problem.

If the customer took out money that was in his account due to a mistake BoA would have them arrested.

It's time for someone in BoA to be arrested for this.

2011-11-17 10:11:17 PM
A bank of mine almost did this because they assumed my first name, which had explicitly been written out, was my last name, and they thus put my money in the wrong account. Fortunately it got fixed quickly, but jesus. Why is it even tied just to a name? Don't I fill out my birthday, address and all that crap out for a reason?

Good old Bank of America, proving that once again that they don't give a damn about anyone.

Well, linking to the TBO article, it says it was in Pinellas county, we have a large Greek population here, pretty much the entire town of Tarpon Springs is based on Greek culture, so a greek name isn't surprising in the least. They don't say where they older man is. I am confused that the cops say it is a civil matter. wouldn't withdrawing money you know you don't have be fraud at the very least? If it had been the bank's money they would have been all over the guy who withdrew the money to get it back. I hate BoA and all banks, dirty scum they are!

A proper database has something called a "primary key" used to give a unique identity so that this does not happen such as ss number and / or email address or composite keys. Sounds like they hired someones cousin to create the database

Any decent database programmer (like me) would never use a birthday and address because there is a chance that another person will have that same information (even a small chance)

Why the hell would someone named Konstantinos Alexopoulos even have 59,000 dollars? He/she should be poor as hell with a name like that. If I saw that on a resume I'd think someone was farking with me. I'd rather hire someone named Steve.

This happened to my relative about a month ago, but with Capital One, not BofA. Someone with her same name, but living in Louisiana instead of Maryland, died. They both had trusts. The deceased relatives show up to withdraw the money from the trust, and they end up taking it from my aunt's account instead of the dead woman's account who had the same name. It was a lot of money too -- over $200k as I recall. Basically, the teller and branch manager failed to check the birth date, address, or trust instructions (which state who it can be paid out do), nor did they call the trustee. Apparently some people got fired over that one for not following procedure, and my aunt got her money back, but I assume she moved it all out of CapOne after that.

When I got my first mortgage the employees of the bank - now long merged into some conglomerate - kept asking the stupidest questions. I became convinced that they would fail the Turing test. Has any one stop to consider that as part of corporate hegemony the Imagineers at Disney are supplying banks and cell phone companies with employees?

Imagineer 1: This one fail basic functional test to be in the hall of the presidents.
Imagineer 2: Send it to Comcast to handle billing questions then.

That figure is a little on the high side.
