In the report, Patrick's chief legal counsel, Mark Reilly, said there was no electronic record of any Romney administration emails. A Romney campaign spokeswoman last night acknowledged that the hard drives were purchased but said that the former aides did nothing wrong. She also accused Patrick of "doing the Obama campaign's dirty work."

Well. Nothing that we can prove, anyway.

Fun fact: Hard drives don't actually get "erased", they just get written over.

Hey! Those hard drives just fell on a huge magnet. And stuff.

While this is technically true, low level format will clean the platters fairly well.

I don't know, when you take the cases apart, take the platters out and wipe them off, as well as run the internal magnets over them, they are pretty well wiped

/as well as not usable

From what I glean from this article, the situation looks something like this:

Partick: Romney and co. deleted all of the correspondences from their time in office, I'm not saying it was aliens shady, but...

Romney: Nuh uh, we're not shady, you're the one who's shady, you Obama loving... Obama lover! In fact, you're so shady we want you to give us every the record of every single time you looked at, talked to, or even thought about Obama over the past five years!

Patrick: Okay, would you like that for here or to go?

/Is that about right?

We'd have to ask the Australian PM.

No worries.
They keep a back up.
On a University server.
In central PA.
Just in case.

They took their government hard drives?

How is that not highly illegal?

The question is, did these people do anything that intelligent when they removed their records from the drives?

[checks article]

Probably not. Someone call a forensic computer specialist with a current copy of EnCase.

Were there server backups? What was backed up? Were state policies for record keeping followed prior to erasing the hard drives.

It is a fine line between data security and improper data retention.

Yep ... to be followed about 90 seconds later by:
Romney: Patrick's illegal Obama campaign conspiracy STILL hasn't produced the smoking gun emails - why is he stonewalling?!

I suppose they could have the drives declared as surplus government assets, and made available for private purchase. Pretty sure you can't just buy them outright.

I always physically destroy my hard drives and order a cheap one from Newegg before selling a laptop on Craigs. It's not that I have state secrets or anything. I just wanna cover my ass.

So, they didn't do anything wrong, but they realize that it looks bad. Even though it's true, publicizing the truth is a "dirty trick."

Wow.
