Fire and Ice by R. Frost

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

The Deccan Traps have been looked at for a very long time and it was determined they weren't enough to kill everyone off, and a thick quartz layer around this Indian crater hasn't been found to exist, like the Yucatan crater, which is proof of high impact. I'm unconvinced. The Traps helping the Yucatan impact is probable, but the Indian crater is highly unproven.

Fire and Ice by P. Benatar

Fire and Ice
You come on like a flame
Then you turn a cold shoulder
Fire and Ice
I wanna give you my love
But you'll just take a little piece of my heart

You'll just tear it apart

Despite Michael Crichton's best efforts, the dinosaurs are still dead after 65 million years.

No word yet on Generalissimo Francisco Franco.

I hope Pat Benatar is ok with all this fire and ice bs.

Here's how it really happened

The series finale of Dinosaurs depicts the irresponsible actions of the dinosaurs toward their environment, and the ensuing Ice Age which leads to their demise. The episode "Changing Nature" begins with the failure of a swarm of beetles to show up and devour a form of creeper vine. Charlene discovers that Wesayso has constructed a wax fruit factory on the swampland that serves as the beetles' breeding grounds, causing the extinction of the species (saved for one male named Stan). Fearing a public relations fiasco more than any environmental threat, Wesayso quickly puts Earl in charge of an attempt to destroy the vines, which have grown out of control without the beetles to keep them in check. Earl proposes spraying the planet with defoliant, which causes the destruction of the vines, but also kills off all plant life on the planet.

Richfield assumes that the creation of clouds will bring rain, allowing the plants to grow back, and so decides to create clouds by dropping bombs in the planet's volcanoes to cause eruptions and cloud cover. The dark clouds instead cause global cooling, in the form of a gigantic cloudcover (simulating the effects of what the viewer would recognize as nuclear winter) that scientists estimate would take "tens of thousands of years" to dissipate. Later, Earl apologizes to his family for his actions. The episode ends with Howard Handupme as he finishes his broadcast, grimly saying "Goodbye" to the audience.

Reminds me of Preston/Childs The Ice Limit (new window)
Super-dense meteorite punches through the Earth's crust to make a volcano, and the lava flow pushes it back to the surface to be discovered.

I thought one of the leading theories was that the meteor impact in the gulf triggered the massive volcanic eruptions on the other side of the globe... FSM crapped so hard on one side of the planet that the toilets on the other side backed up...

I was watching a bunch of dinosaur shows recently, and that occurred to me, since that the deccan traps are roughly on the other side of the planet from the chicxulub crater (and maybe were 65m years ago?), sorta like tapping a water balloon, you get a ripple around to the other side... but i couldnt find any materials with theories linking them, got any sources?

At the present time, the Deccan Traps are considerably offset from the antipode of the Chicxulub crater (over 15 degrees in longitude and 40 degrees in latitude). Sixty-five million years ago, the latitude difference was smaller (India has moved northward), but the longitude difference was greater (North America has moved westward). In addition, the Traps eruptions occurred in several pulses over millions of years, both before and after the Chicxulub impact. On the other hand, the main eruptive sequence in the Deccan Traps) was roughly coincident with the Chicxulub impact, and it's possible that the impact may have affected the timing of these eruptions. However, they probably would have happened eventually even without an asteroid impact.

"On a distant planet, descendants of a crashed spaceship are subjected to mysterious forces that cause them to age and die in just eight days. They must also live in caves to escape the bitter cold of night and the killing heat of day. One young boy is determined to find his way back to the ship that brought them there. But how will he accomplish this in the short time left to him?"

Wrong, biatch.
It's fire.

Not mine, just a Fark classic.

I Havent Killed Anybody Since 1984, Fire, Ice, & Dynamite is perhaps the greatest bad movie of all time. It's the Hanna-Barbera Wacky Races cartoon in real life, except stupider, with Roger Moore.

Sadly, sadly underknown.

Gerta Keller has been out to disprove the Alvarez hypothesis for years now. She overlooks the influence of reworking on her supposed evidence, has mistaken dolomite crystals for foraminifera, and has argued that multiple impacts occurred in the exact same location on the earth (Chicxulub). Pretty much a nutjob that's only concerned with disproving a theory she doesn't like, regardless of what the evidence suggests.
