Better as a manager than 3rd base coach. He was known as "Send 'em in Sveum" when he was at 3rd for the Red Sox. In one season I swear he was responsible for getting dozens of guys thrown out at the plate.

For some reason that season he set Papi in from 3rd like 8 times with predictable results.

/I really hope he does well managing Sawx Central

Dave Sveum? Is that Dale's brother?

I don't either. I'm not sure if there is a meme that I missed or if submitter is a dumbass and is trying to argue that since the Cubs won a World Series 103 years ago that that somehow makes them better than the Brewers.

'07 was the year Lou pulled Zambrano in the 6th, and then the bullpen cacked up their lead, and Lou said he was saving Z for Game 4...oops.

I will always remember Dale Sveum for this game in 1998. I was in Toronto that day with my dad and we went to the game. In the 8th inning the Yankees were trailing 6-2 with 1 out and runners on 2nd and 3rd. Darryl Strawberry was due up. Toronto brought in a lefty - Dan Plesac. Joe Torre decided to send up switch hitting Dale Sveum and his .676 career OPS to pinch hit for Straw to get the lefty-righty match-up. It was just like that episode of The Simpsons - except real life. Sveum ended up striking out (predictably). Terrible, terrible managing

People like to pretend a franchise matters. The city of Milwaukee had the braves, which went to win a world series in the 57. They use the Brewers because they are jealous of 50 years worth of better.

Subby fails. Hard. No one is worse than the Cubs. Except maybe the Astros.

Teams being sold for parts don't count.

Subby, while we can passionately and subjectively argue the merits of both teams, while reaching no reasonable conclusions, can we at least agree that Dave Sveum is not a coach for the Brewers, and you are an idiot fan of a terrible team?

2011-11-17 01:48:37 PM
If Sveum picks Boston, he'll suddenly become the greatest manager in history and he will be so until he leaves boston and becomes the worst manager in history who got lucky a couple times.

We can claim a role of being a very supportive part of the Packers' geographic family. The Packers wouldn't have survived to today were it not for three regular season games in Milwaukee for many, many years, along with two postseason games and one NFL Championship Game at State Fair Park.

Yup. Before the Old Co., the Packers played their Milwaukee games at the Fair Park inside the racetrack, save a few games at Borchert Field in the early days and one year at Marquette Stadium before the Old Co. was finished. The team moved the title game to Milwaukee in the hopes of making more money.

There's a ton of interesting stuff about the game here (new window). Imagine a Super Bowl not being front-page news in the city it was played in, other than the fashion worn by the fans, in this day and age. Interesting, too, are the comments made by George Marshall, saying Milwaukee should construct a football stadium. The city was still 14 years away from the Old Co.

Interestingly, there was also talk in 2007 about using the Fair Park in a similar way again, albeit for MLS. More on that here (new window).

The Cubs are .513 all-time, and have never in their history been below .500 overall. The Brewers are .471 all-time, and have never in their history been above .500 overall, unless you count when the Pilots went 3-2 to open the 1969 season.

2011-11-17 07:21:04 PM
Cubs record since 1969 is 3388-3598 (.485) Nothing to be overly proud of for a non-expansion team.

Brewers record since 1978 when they finally got their shiat together after 9 years of expansion struggles is 2648-2735 (.492). Cubs 2586-2788 (.481)

I'm not buying more crap about the Cubs being better than the Brewers. Who cares that the Cubs were better before the Korean War?

Anyway, let's face it. This is a retard slap fight.

OK, you get Hack Wilson, Gabby Hartnett, Ernie Banks and Billy Williams on the field for the Cubs next year, you might have a chance.

(Wilson could probably out-hit several of the current Cubs in his current condition)

Let's be honest - put the Cubs teams of the past 65 years in a dull, modern ballpark, and nobody would go to see them.

Not only that, but there was a playoff game at County Stadium in 1967. Lombardi said he was trying to save the Lambeau Field turf for the NFL championship the following week. He needn't have bothered: that game was the Ice Bowl.

DrBear: Not only that, but there was a playoff game at County Stadium in 1967. Lombardi said he was trying to save the Lambeau Field turf for the NFL championship the following week. He needn't have bothered: that game was the Ice Bowl.

1967 was the first year the NFL had a scheduled four-game playoff. Prior to that, a conference championship game would only be played if there was a tie.

The last playoff game the Packers played at home prior to the Ice Bowl was in 1965, when they beat the Browns in a legendary NFL Championship Game. It was both Jim Brown's final game and the game that produced the legendary NFL Films shot of a muddied Paul Hornung, following behind two pulling guards, running the Lombardi sweep to the end zone, daylight and glory.

Thing is, it was a quagmire of mud and muck. That probably played into Lombardi's thinking in 1967. The grass would have been fine for the Ice Bowl if it weren't for the weather. If it would have been frozen solid mud instead, which it probably would have been if they hadn't played in Milwaukee, they might as well have just sprayed an inch of water on the field and had the guys play on ice skates. The footing was bad enough with grass.

For completeness sake, the Packers beat the Cowboys for the NFL title in 1966, but that game was played at the Cotton Bowl.
