Meanwhile, F***ing, Austria is still around. NSFW language, obviously.

/went there last year, got my picture in front of the "Farking" signs... residents were laughing as they drove by

Alex Tribick, chairman of the Spelthrone Business Forum, led the campaign. He said: 'There's no doubt Ali G put Staines on the map - but for all the wrong reasons. He put the stain in Staines.

Suck it, Tribick. Property values in your town are going down because of a fictional character? Way to do your thing, business forum chairman dude.

I laughed when Focus on the Family and all the other groups claimed Borat would cause society's downfall. It was Ali G!!

That's a shame. I've been to Staines, and I have to say that it was about as fitting a name as anyone could come up with for that place.

/it was kind of a dump

SBC needed to be at that meeting and do an Ali G bit about it with him discussing his hometown changing names making the entire endeavor pointless.

The Onion is prophetic: /went there last year, got my picture in front of the "Farking" signs... residents were laughing as they drove by

Nice. I took a day trip from Liverpool to go here:
www.thenewsgrind.com

It's a small town in northeast Wales, I had a lovely pub lunch there. Beautiful countryside, and as a Beatles fan, I was happy to have a train change in Bangor, where The Beatles met with that fraud the Maharishi in 1968. Stupid George Harrison and his guru's.

Ali G: [walking, interviewing ATF agent] and what does ATF stand for?
ATF Agent: Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives
Ali G: Safe. What else does you sell?
ATF Agent: [stops walking, and looks at him] well, we don't sell anything.
......
ATF Agent: this is our canine we use to sniff explosives
Ali G: can he smell drugs?
ATF: no
Ali G: [under his breath] thank god
ATF: [chuckling] you're OK
Ali G: I don't have anything on me

I also spotted Alex Tribick's name and found it ironic.

But look at this more closely:

Alex Tribick, chairman of the Spelthrone Business Forum, led the campaign. He said: 'There's no doubt Ali G put Staines on the map - but for all the wrong reasons. He put the stain in Staines.

They should change their name to Staynes, the Town that Can't Spell Straight.

I wonder if Staines has a Junk Alley? Maybe they could create one so they'd be associated with Mr. Stain instead of Ali G:

This is what comes to my mind when I hear of a place named Staines.

Who was it that decided that, "(name of town) on the/upon (name of waterway)" was the way to class up the name of a town? The GF and I were making fun the all the little towns along Hudson River while out with my folks just last month. She was also trying to come comically ridiculous equivalents for the towns along The Hackensack back in NJ with mixed results.

And they're changing it to Staines upon Thames??? How is that better?
