If you attempted to snarl the commute in DC, would anyone notice?

They said on the radio this morning that the Occupy DC folks wanted to call attention to crumbling infrastructure with today's display of stupidity. They plan to do this by marching to the admittedly-decrepit Key Bridge, which will presumably collapse under the weight of all that self-righteousness.

Occupy hood/bumper

OMG, I got a great idea(s) guys. Okay, two words, Tiananmen Square.

It was a little over 20 years when over half of America sat bewildered as one lone Chinaman stood up to the communist forces. That could never happen here, right? Well, it doesn't have to. Outsourcing,,,OMG.

Since we outsource every other able bodied working person to China, why not these guys? There's a possible movie deal in it for you, too. An American Hero in Tiananmen. It kind of rolls off the tongue nicely...haha.

2011-11-17 09:21:40 AM
Aw, in order to save your future, OWS is going to make you late for work.

Sucks to be you.

2011-11-17 09:24:45 AM
The march is scheduled for 2:30 PM. How is this going to screw up the morning commute?

2011-11-17 09:26:23 AM
I guess this is what happens when the police destroy the occupy camps. Stirring up the hornets nest and all.

This text is now purple: If you attempted to snarl the commute in DC, would anyone notice?

I was going to say I could probably singlehandedly snarl traffic in DC from here at my desk in Orlando.

2011-11-17 09:27:39 AM
Maybe this is a way for Occupy DC to bolster their ranks. Commuters are late for work, get fired, then join the movement. It's a win-win situation as the commuters aren't burdened with having to work anymore as an added bonus.

/sounds good on paper

2011-11-17 09:27:45 AM
No they aren't. No they don't... STFU FOX!!!!!

This! Having lived in the DC area for ten years, I can say there is no need to intervene to fark up everyone's commute. It happens naturally every day.

AcneVulgaris: Great. Now they'll get thrwon in the asshole pile with Critical Mass.

No. They jumped willingly and eagerly into the asshole pie. Which I would also like to note is also made up of Code Pink.

I guess your congressman will need to inside trade from home that day.

"Those who profess to favor freedom, yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will."

- Frederick Douglass, African-American abolitionist

What sucks, and this is coming from someone who disagrees with them more than I agree with them, is that the OWS folks do have some good idea that people should listen to. There are some things that they are upset with which are quite legitimate.

The problem, though, is that they seem more interested in making a spectacle of themselves (kind of reminds me of PETA) than of any sort of intellectual discourse.

At one point, they had the nation's attention and, frankly, sympathy. It's amazing that they stupidly squandered that for, what, really? The Tea Party got a few of their ideological allies elected and changed the tenor of the debate in the Republican Party. Does anyone really think that OWS is going to get more Liberal Democrats elected or change the tenor of debate in the Democratic Party?

Greece and Italy are rioting against their false democracies (two unpopular prime ministers replaced with ex-bankers who caused the crisis). And outside of banks and parliaments instead of their own neighborhoods.
In New York, traders can't get in. Thousands of people have peacefully shut down Wall Street merely by occupying space.
Protesters tore down police barricades in front of a police car, put them back up and are standing around the car.
NYPD is refusing to show badges, most are peacefully zip tying or arresting people to be fair, some are swinging batons indiscriminately in a crowd of people with Wall Street workers caught up in the mix.
An woman in a wheelchair and a former Philadelphia police captain have been arrested by the NYPD.
Whine all you want, people are actually having some effect and are fed up with the abuse by the public bureaucrats and private managers who gamble with their lives and try to steal money from people who work for a living to give to wealthy people who facilitated the crisis for their own gain in the name of "austerity".

Who or what is discourse to be had with?
Congress will not listen. The rich people they're mad at will not listen.
The country public, by its very nature, will not listen because dickwads have gotten so much better at framing the narrative in the past 30 years.
Realistically, the best they can hope for is shifting the public dialogue and holding the attention in a specific direction.

ACallForPeace: In New York, traders can't get in.

They're delayed by a few minutes, meaning a bit less (or rather, a bit colder) coffee time. Other than that, I think they're probably more entertained than anything

Another option is to dispense with these unneeded thieves all together.
Organize your local communities with consensus or some form of direct democracy with blocks against the mob rule.
Democratically run workplaces and communities, direct action against police, banks, and austerity on behalf of the people.
We don't need them, they need us. Just stop working for them or addressing them, instead peacefully shut them down or sidestep the system and take control of your lives directly.

Good.

You don't get to be a former police captain from Philly without being deeply (and usually stupidly) corrupt.

They plan to do this by marching to the admittedly-decrepit Key Bridge, which will presumably collapse under the weight of all that self-righteousness.

And yet no one is asking why we're not investing in said crumbling infrastructure- a move that would, in fact, create a whole lot of jobs in a country that badly needs them, not to mention that it'd solve a pervasive issue in our country that's coming to bite us in the ass pretty badly at the same time. Last I checked something close to 60% of out bridges (just the bridges) are in DIRE need of repair. I guess sorta like Nuke plants we'll just keep lowering the standards when we don't meet them. Hey-ho! De-regulation!

I guess self-centered short-sighted jackholes won't be thinking about any of this until another big bridge collapses during rush hour, killing scores of people. And perhaps not even then unless one of their loved ones is among the dead.

OH NOES! MAH COMMUTE DIS MORNING! DEEEEERRRRRRP!

Jesus Christ.
I can just see the headlines if this was 1963 and the internet and Fark were around.

img1.fark.net In the name of fighting social and racial inequality - The Southern Christian Leadership Conference is going to F up your commute to work this morning Birmingham.

Because you know that the same right wing shills here on Fark that are demonizing the occupy movement would have been doing the same thing in the 50's and 60's with the civil rights movement. Not because they are necessarily racist, but because they are brainwashed and will believe all of the lies that the power elite would lay out about the movement.

2011-11-17 09:53:09 AM
I don't think most people realize how often protests occur in DC. When i lived there a few years ago, it was pretty much every weekend. I didn't go into the city during the week, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone was protesting something every other day.

That's why protesting in NYC was so effective, it was a shock. The people of DC will just shrug it off like they always do.

If those idiots worked as hard at finding jobs they wouldn't be out protesting.

String together a bunch of misleading pictures because you don't have the IQ to type your opinions and back up your facts. You sir, are a tool.
