'Cause if there's one thing this world needs, it's a bigger bomb to kill brown people faster.

FTFA:

"The Massive Ordnance Penetrator - the Air Force has ordered 20 from Boeing - is nearly five tons heavier than any other bomb in the military's arsenal and is made to pulverize underground targets."

I have a new euphemism for my penis.

There are plenty of bombs that kill brown people as fast as you'd ever want.

These kill brown people buried deep under tonnes of concrete.

/try that with a daisy cutter or fuel-air bomb

This doesn't detonate until it's deep underground. It probably has successive charges that dig a hole before the main payload goes off and truly farks up somebody's day

And the never ending cycle of offense vs defense continues. We design a bigger bomb capable of penetrating deeper, countries start burying things even deeper or put them under underwater, etc.

These are weapons normally reserved for the times of war when the enemy thinks he is out of reach . But with a little foresight you can have a few of these weapons ready to take out the enemy bunkers in the first days of a war, hopefully averting a drawn out conflict by getting the brass on day one.

and then it open up and a smaller bomb comes out and then an even smaller bomb comes out and then an even smaller bomb comes out followed by a flag that comes out and says BOOM?

I'm in need of info from someone who knows more than I do. If it has 5,300 pounds of explosive, why is it called a 30,000 pound bomb?

REO-Weedwagon: I assume the Teabaggers will protest this wasteful government spending?

Military spending is always OK, as long as it doesn't go to the soldiers.

Also, military spending isn't wasteful, since that money goes straight to job-creating defense contractors. If we gave it to poor people, they would just stick it under their mattresses or smoke it, not stimulating the economy at all.

Finally, not buying $500 hammers from contractors would infringe on their constitutional right to make a profit.

etc, etc.

I never understood why we glorify this bullshiat.

Can we instead buy better facilities for our children to learn in, better and more nourishing food to eat, and better-paid educators?

Can we instead help the poor and needy, provide better and more affordable health services, and provide housing?

What about using the money to improve infrastructure? America could use a high speed commuter railway to connect major cities.

Or how about focusing on positive research that may improve human lives?

"Green" urban development?

They base explosive power for bombs in terms of TNT. So it's equivalent to 30,000 pounds of dynamite.

This is part of a scaled response to Iran's nuclear weapons program. If we were not trying to get them to peacefully stop the insanity, they would have found out about it after the drop. Israel is basically saying "if you don't, we will". An attack, unilaterally by Israel, would ignite the Arab world. Depending on your opinion, we are doing what the Arab world should do if they had the resolve. I would hope they get on board publicly and take the lead. The likelihood of that happening is small. Iran has stated that the destruction of Israel is their priority. Iran is seeking to dominate the region. Development and deployment of nuclear weapons can be used to that end. Let's see - threaten to drop a bomb on a weapons facility or wait for a "bigger bomb" to be dropped on civilians and potentially touch of all sorts of global chaos (politically, economically and militarily). Doing nothing will be paid for in spades in the future.

Obviously never had to work under a government contract. The hammer costs the company $20.00 to make, the government requires reams of paperwork for that hammer. You would be amazed at the silly documentation requirements for mundane items. Go read a toilet paper specification. The Government did it buddy. We contractors are just complying. I will say that changes are being made to buy commercially available items.

Explosive blast compared to pounds of TNT.

What I mean is, when they are telling you how that it's a 2,000 pound bomb for instance, that's just saying it will explode with the same energy as a pile of dynamite that weighed a ton. The bomb is using some sort of special plastic explosive I'm sure that would weigh much less. Think of how they describe nuclear or hydrogen bombs in terms of kilotons. TNT is just what they use for comparison so you can imagine the energy.

Make sense?

So, do you think that Obey is planning to keep any of these for the US, or just hand them over to Netanyahu like he secretly did with 55 other US Bunker Buster bombs back in 2009 ?

FTA: "At a total cost of about $314 million, the military has developed and ordered 20 of the GPS-guided bombs, called Massive Ordnance Penetrators. They are designed to be dropped on targets by the Boeing-made B-52 Stratofortress long-range bomber or Northrop Grumman Corp.'s B-2 stealth bomber.

Oh, looks like we'll have to give Bibi some B-2's as well.

Yeah I remember working on a howitzer simulator back in the 90s. The document put together to test the thing stood 13 inches tall.
