The former write-in candidate for Arizona governor travelled to Ukraine looking for love. He ended up hungry and sick in a homeless shelter - the victim of an internet dating scam.

Well, okay, so his judgment is demonstrably not much worse than the sitting governor's...

"He is not really my type," she said.

Who wouldn't want a guy so lonely he'll travel around the world hoping to find a woman desperately poor enough to marry him?

C'mon the guy's a great catch.

The mullet and beaver hat are just bonuses.

I dated a girl with a ton of Slavic blood in her. Delightful wouldn't be the exact word for that experience. She was cold, shallow, selfish, cruel, and I don't think she has a soul.

Did this guy not see Hostel? Starving in a homeless shelter is the least bad thing that could have happened to him.

It's too cold already. Gotta lock that shiat down before the winter comes, bro. Like end of summer

Well, you said that she had a ton of Slavic blood in her, not that she was of a Slavic ethnic background. Was she some kind of serial killer?

With nowhere to go and no money left, Mr Dolego spent days roaming the streets of Chernivtsi with other homeless men until he was picked up by social workers and taken to a shelter. He spoke by phone on Wednesday from a hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia.

"I was looking for a Ukrainian mate, a partner, somebody who would stay with me, be my wife," Mr Dolego said. "All the Slavic ladies in this part of the world are absolutely delightful."

1) Do not show up to your internet bride's home penniless. That's just tacky.

2) If reporters ask you about your idiocy, you should probably not comment.

C'mon, give the guy a break. Haven't we all been there at one time or another?

Well, except for being lost and broke in a country where you don't speak the language. But other than that . . . .

Exempting the mullet, I could totally see Zach Galafanakis in this role.

1) claims to be working on a degree that has nothing to do with anything he has done or wants to do
2) dreams of being a nautical or aeronautical engineer to save lives
3) was a write-in candidate for governor
4) fell in love with a fake person in a different country
5) travelled to that country to meet her, lost all his money, got very sick, winds up in homeless shelter
6) still thinks he has a chance with the woman whose identity was used to lure him there
7) she's a doctor, he's a lunatic

A woman who acknowledged being Yulia says she had been unaware of Mr Dolego's existence during the internet fling.

Holy cow, there actually was a woman? It's usually some boys in Lagos or Abidjan sending random pics off a modeling site. Guys get lonely enough, they'll believe *anything*.

I think that Stalinism bred most of the better parts of human nature out of them 70 years ago. Anyone with enough honor not to sell their neighbor for a liter of vodka went straight to the gulag, after all.

If a dude has such bad issues that he has to go to a foreign country to find a wife, he needs to understand that those same issues follow him to the foreign country. I was reading about these pensioners going to Thailand and marrying impoverished women and convincing themselves these women loved them.

I've never really understood the appeal of Slavic or East Asian women (*). The ones I've dealt with over here just seemed cold and aloof, and for every story that turns out well, I've heard of a couple where the woman assumes every American is made of money, etc.

Maybe they sensed I was poor and overweight at the time, which is fine, but isn't that the sort of shallowness the foreign women fanboys complain is rampant in American women?

(*) For some reason women from the Philippines were (on average) nicer to me during my single years. I don't quite know how that worked out.

Meh it's just a popular sterotype, I'm afraid. One of my closest friends is Japanese and I have never seen her act that way.

But sadly there are stereotypes for all cultures:

All Americans are fat and stupid

All Irish are drunks

All Mexicans are drug pushers

All French are rude

And so forth....

It took a while after I left for me to realize it, but they are shallow everywhere. But at least they don't have that nails on a chalkboard American Co-ed accent.
