nekom: Heh. Reminds me a lot of when they did that in Georgia (the country, not the state) a few years ago.

Was that the one where they overthrew the regime.. then went in and grabbed the president/premier/whatever he's called.. and his wife.. took them to court and then immediately drug them out back and executed them for various crimes against humanity and people in general? If so.. that was a chilling video to see.
Set a hell of a precedent too!

I think that was Romania in 1989, Nicolae Ceaucescu being the autocrat in question.

No, that was Romania. And those people had been ruthless dictators for decades.

And if they did cook up a plan to do just that, at either the political or economic centers of power, the Fark Independents(tm) would be here declaring them dangerous smelly militants who should all be shot and should just get a job. White knighting for the non-job-creating Job Creators appears to be a fun waste of time, though I'm not sure it pays well.

Nope, that was Ceausescu in Romania in '89, but those were ugly Communists...and the guys who that happy crowd ended up choosing as replacements were also all communist party members. Kind of a farked up precedent...

Maybe if you got out of your echo chamber once in a while, you might learn something.

But no, it's easier to think that the movement you don't like has no goals or plan. Saves you the brainpower it takes to care to power other tasks, like breathing.

2011-11-17 11:35:55 AM
you try to "occupy" the floor of the US Capitol and I guarantee you will be thrown in jail for terrorist activity or shot.

And right wing concern trolls will say they got what they deserved, and they should have protested in the free speech zone: a locked broom closet in the basement with a "beware of leopard" sign.

Seriously, I don't think OWS is that great of a protest movement, as far as protests go, but everyone seems hellbent on delegitimizing them because they don't "do enough." And what that 'enough' is constantly changing: Elect a highly charismatic leader who is aligned with all their ideals, create comprehensive documentation of all their grievances, solve the debt crisis and unemployment, or overthrow the government.

OWS has already achieved the greatest of goals, get noticed and force you to think about them. There really isn't a next step for OWS, the next step is for new groups, new ideas, and new individuals to take this new awareness and affect change. OWS is a thermometer, an indicator of widespread aggregate angst at the financial-political system. Rarely do movements "do anything" except get noticed, and stay noticed. That's enough to affect individuals.

Unfortunately I agree. Here it's a big hairy revolutionary deal to dance around in a Bank of America branch lobby for a few minutes, and then only in San Francisco.

What would happen if a big bunch of Occupiers stormed the U.S. Capitol? Unarmed & non-violently I mean, the only people with guts enough to do that armed are scarily right-wing anti-reptilian types.

Personally I think as long as they didn't break anything, poop on the floor or try to set up tents the relevant Authorities would just point & giggle. Most of the protesters would be too busy getting video of each other to be very threatening.

I mean today genius, not in the 40's. The Germans have a long history of government versus the people, extending much farther back then WW1 and WW2. Most Europeans have this instilled in them due to their storied history in this area.

America does not have that same history of revolution and making the government accountable. Today it is a joke to make and laugh at with friends that Americans would collectively have enough balls to do anything like took place in Kuwait.

Depends what "floor". The rotunda? Stand around until 4 all you want. No sitting or laying though that's specifically illegal. The house floor? You'd never get there and the gallery doesn't allow any electronics. Occupy the CVC? The tour groups would shush you so they could hear their guides. Either way a rep would never know of your existence. If you want their attention you need to occupy their offices or the nearby parking garage

paygun: I guess that would be a lot more effective, but the occupy people are pro-government.

Anti-capitalist does not necessarily equal "pro-government", particularly since that's a term laden down with all kinds of American electoral politics-specific folderol. Stricter regulation of financial and environmentally-degrading activities, certainly, but there are also strong tendencies toward civil libertarianism and libertarian socialism, along with statists and reformist progressives who still think the existing political structure is viable. It's pretty rich to paint the Occupiers as all "pro-government" when one of the obstacles to developing the kind of polished platform demanded by mainstream media is the broad diversity of ideological positions held by the Occupiers, combined with the decentralized decision-making methods implemented by many camps. Even the matter of whether to engage existing political parties at all has been a point of contention.

Uh huh. The minute that happened they'd all be arrested or shot. Followed up by FOX news 24 hour a day blasting about how the hippies are coming for you! Half the country would agree they deserved it for daring to break whatever rule they think is important. Then the government would use it as an excuse to crack down harder on all of the OWS movement. Within 48 hours we'll be back to a bunch of farking morons piling in about lazy assholes who don't want to work.

However, I guess we could call up some anarchists to do it since I am enjoying how everything is blamed on anarchists. Sure thing guys. The last time an anarchist got really motivated, he started a world war. Now they feed homeless people and run bookstores, so they're probably not up to it anymore. I guess we'll have to try the Fight Club method. Anyone know a bunch of nihilist angry kids that want to blow up stuff? Send them these pictures.

Wrong.

They are protesting the political change in Italy (Monti). You can tell they are because they have signs everywhere that say "We don't want a banking government, Out with Monti". This is happening right now. Again, completely uneducated and ignorant to what is going on around you.

Do you even make an attempt to validate the bull shiat that comes out of your clueless yap? Germany does NOT want to take on austerity and is openly discussing leaving the EU. I could try explaining to you why it is in Germany's best interests to jump off the bail out bandwagon but i'll let Merkel and the rest of the country do that for me once they DE-couple.

Good question. I think in the end it will change nothing for the immediate future. These guys at the top are pushing this plan through to the point where they will enforce change at the government level (Monti, Papademos and Draghi) before they will ever consider change at the economic level. That is to say, a bank will survive much longer than a government, and if a government needs to go in order to keep the banks and bankers alive, so be it.

It is surreal to watch what is happening in Europe right now but... it's real. Europe has shown throughout history that once the people reach a certain level of "fark this", it's on. They will fight with the police and try and kill their politicians for selling out their future, something that is considered impossible here in America.

If enough of them all go after them there will be no choice but to see change. General strikes have historically be a good indication or the direction and strength of a movement, since that really does hurt everyone (if not for a day).
