Who are these boffins and why are they only visible to limeys?

The True 3D Display apparently works by focusing laser light to produce plasma excitation from the oxygen and nitrogen in the air, DigInfo.tv reports.

1. How many gigawatts of power does it take?
2. What happens if you stick your hand in the beam?

The portable green beam thing is only a little bit underwhelming, but the 2 seconds of footage they showed of the white ball shape floating over a bigger machine was real damn promising.

That's what I was thinking. Even so, the green laser version was still cool. The main problem with the video is that the laser's framerate was colliding with the video's framerate, which made it look choppier than it was.

Came here to post this. But as long as I'm here...

Here's a longer version of the white laser in air video: Link (new window)

That came from this page.

Interesting stuff.

I couldn't believe how much press that stupid special effect got. I can't believe people let them call that a hologram when it was just a well coordinated video overlay.

The display in the article is an interesting idea, but nothing more than that. Give it a couple decades and it might be at a useful resolution.

Until I can stick my pennor in it, I don't care.

Production is always '3 to 5 years away.'
