"Many of the children don't even have TVs in their houses because of religious beliefs."

Ah, downstate Illinois. Bastion of normalcy.

2011-11-16 11:01:43 PM
Those poor kids are scarred for life.

2011-11-16 11:06:37 PM
Meanwhile, Channel One still pumps tripe into classrooms unabated...

LOLWUT?

/my 13-year-old brother watches the Daily Show occassionally
//I'm more of a Colbert kinda guy

Suspended? These people are terrified. Pathetic.

/which segments?

2011-11-16 11:39:01 PM
That was probably some of the most realistic views on politics they're ever going to receive.

"Many of the children don't even have TVs in their houses because of religious beliefs."

Bullshiat.

2011-11-16 11:44:08 PM
I don't understand why they're upset. Isn't it prudent to know what your enemy is thinking?

2011-11-16 11:47:47 PM
Meanwhile, when my kids were freshmen in high school, they required them to watch The Patriot, a movie so violent that it was rated R.

America is weird. It's OK to watch people on TV being killed a hundred different heinous ways, as long as a tit doesn't pop out in the process.

Fixed for accuracy.

These kids have been fapping to porn for 4 years already.

Pathetic.

And there is the real danger.

The worst part is that this horrible, evil teacher may be teaching these children to think!

We can't have that! Why, it might even affect standardized test scores!

The movie The People vs. Larry Flynt, while mostly an excuse to see fictionalized porn shoots, had an interesting segment where Flynt speaks to an audience.

Paraphrasing it went something like:

Obscene... What do we define as obscene these days? You mean to tell me that THIS (picture of tits) is more disturbing than THIS? (picture of Vietnam War) Something like THIS (picture of lady-ass) is more obscene and disgusting to you than THIS? (picture of bloodied soldiers probably in WWII)... Sex is a beautiful thing, and sometimes it is portrayed as worse than war. Oh sure, it's fine to put dead people in our children's textbooks, but make it a criminal offense to show them even a breast. America really has to define what obscene is.

I might have gone off-topic here, but I felt that was interesting to share.

We watched The Ten Commandments in public school. Look at me now! I mean, I am level-headed and somewhat sane. I learned the school staff were snakes and my snake frequently turned into a staff.

Home school your f*cking snowflakes if you're that opposed to having them exposed to views that don't fall 100% in line with your whacko political beliefs. Seriously, why does everyone else have to accommodate your opposition to things like evolution, climate change, and human reproduction? It just keeps getting more and more ridiculous.

That right there is when I decided I couldn't continue to read their derp. Too depressing to think how ignorant and isolated those kids must be.

"Certainly politics are playing a part, but my main concern is they are showing inappropriate material with language and dealing with sex to minors in a school setting."

Ya, because the best way to deal with sexual issues is to ignore it.

2011-11-17 06:51:38 AM
Teachers should be able to show important subjects like Herman Cain and his assorted past. Good job, Teach!

2011-11-17 06:51:48 AM
I like how they openly admit that they suspended a teacher for the heinous crime of teaching because Jesus. I haven't yet decided if it's "Ha-ha" funny or "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" funny, though.

"I did, because of the language and the sexual overtones that were included in the show that were being shown to sophomores in high school," Punke said. "Many of the children don't even have TVs in their houses because of religious beliefs."

Those are the very people who NEED the Daily Show the most.

"We're a very conservative community here in the city of Eureka,"
The school board listened to parents and held a two-hour executive session during a meeting Monday night.

No filthy liberal TV allowed!

My God! Won't somebody think of the children?

Maybe he wasn't talking about the Daily Show. Maybe he was talking about getting fired for showing political commentary in a "government and law" class.

2011-11-17 06:55:11 AM
doesn't every public school classroom in the country have a television in it?

if television is against your religion, public school is not the place for your child.

2011-11-17 06:57:08 AM
Don't want your kids to drown?

Then for the sake that of anything that may remain holy, KEEP THEM AWAY FROM ANY KIND OF WATER!

Do NOT under any pretext even consider teaching them to swim!
It's FAR TOO DANGEROUS!

/ OK, so as an analogy it's kinda forced, but it does make the point...

You do know that most news programs are scripted, right?

on the one hand, ya'll with "no tv at home because of religious beliefs" are a bunch of morons.

on the other hand, how god damn lazy does a teacher have to be to just screen television instead of teaching? i know it's common, but it's still pathetic.

Some, new, unstainéd, colourful and gay,
Some, torn and tattered, maculate with blood"

"I did, because of the language and the sexual overtones that were included in the show that were being shown to sophomores in high school," Punke said.

The irony is that sophomores (generally age 15-16) are some of the most vile, vulgar, perverted creatures on the planet. (I know, I used to be one.) Hang around a group of sophomore boys and you'll hear foul language and lewd sexual discussion that would make the baby Jesus spontaneously combust.

As opposed to an entire scripted tabloid channel that pretends it's news?

I'm not even a regular watcher, and I have to tell you, there's some pretty hardcore irony in the fact that the website for Cracked Magazine- you know, that funny book you used to read if you were a pre-teen in the 80's?- provides far more insightful journalism and opinion pieces than most big brand "news media" these days.

...and no, I'm not just pointing my finger at Fox. MSNBC and plenty of other big broadcasters- are patently complicit in appealing to the lowest common denominator.

My junior high school showed a movie in the main auditorium as a reward to the graduating seniors (16 years old). Cookies, drinks, etc. were served. They had a student vote to determine the movie. The winner?

People should be encouraged to think for themselves. The only thing we need to teach young people is how to tell the difference between reality and fantasy, the rest will come naturally.

Our asinine government is trying to control the population through censorship and unnecessary bans on free speech and free thought. If we don't fight back we will continue to be a nation of sheeple.

... and for all you people crowing about tenure ... this is why it exists. It doesn't exist to protect genuinely lazy or wicked or criminal or stupid teachers. It exists to defend teachers in manners of scope, programming and material. It's to make sure that the teacher isn't canned because he gave Janey, the daughter of the schoool board president (or the mayor or the town's sole major employer) a 'C' (or an 'F').

At 16, these 'children' are old enough to fark and drive in most places. School is exactly the place they need to be discussing this material; in the presence of responsible adults who can cogently express considered opinions. The considered opinion about this teacher is "oh hell no, you don't stick up outta the crowd or I will cut you down faster than a whole state full of riding mowers!" What a great lesson to teach your children.

The teacher wants to show politically adult material to these children? Good. That's his jorb. At 16, many such children around the world are workers, soldiers, parents and even slaves.

And yet, Stewart and co. are more informative, hard-hitting and balanced than damn near anybody in the 'real' news media these days.

Sad, ain't it?

Great comment....I personally hate the word children. Unfortunately in the US and other nanny states the word child has become a term for a second class citizen. Absolutely NOTHING should be based only on age. People are people regardless of age and deserve the same respect. Maybe if we started treating young people like humans rather than caged animal they would start acting like civilized people.

Well, it's not just laziness in teachers - this kind of "incorporation of technology in the classroom" is encouraged by pedagogical good practice. That is, if you just lecture to kids so that they have to learn how to pay attention to another human being speaking (using language, the practice to which the mayor objects), you are considered a dull teacher who can't communicate to kids these days. Use of "technology" for the sake of the use of technology helps bump up your evaluations.

/as if adults these days didn't create kids these days
