While Ricky Gervais is funnier, smarter, and just plain better than 99.9% of American comedy talent... Should I assume we're never going to get someone as funny and talented as Stephen Fry to host anything significant?

/still hoping he has a cameo on House before the series ends

FTFY

And I like Gervais, although he's got his share of stuff that's just plain unfunny or downright mean (I'm pretty certain the way he treats Karl in An Idiot Abroad is not an act). But I wouldn't classify him with most of the ones you listed and would be surprised to hear anyone trying to. Cleese & Atkinson are more comedic actors than stand-ups (most of their routines are pantomimes), Cooper is kind of a clown/storyteller. I'm not familiar w/Grenfell. However, although I've only heard a few Connolly routines, I'd put him & Gervais in the same category--dark humor, irreverent, humorous stories, some observations. I like them both. But Eddie Izzard beats them all, hands down. And he'd look fabulous doing it.

Actually, you're right about Eddie Izzard. He's brilliant.

Joyce Grenfell is really hard for some people to take. It's 1950s, quite genteel comedy, typically monologues, but brilliantly done.

Rowan Atkinson used to do a one man show that I have on CD. It's a brilliant mix of songs and sketches: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw8dW9Hyno0

I'm picturing the camera paning to a rotting corpse of a raccoon for several silent seconds, alternating between shots of uncomfortable looking celebrities in the audience. This continues for the duration of the show as a screen flashes the names of the winners. Then back to the dead racoon... just flopped out randomly on the stage.

I think it could work.

Thanks for the link--I'll have to watch that tonight. I absolutely love Atkinson and have seen a number of his routines but they're almost all characters and/or sketches (i.e., pantomime). Gervais is a stand-up, so you really can't compare the two. Frankly, I like Gervais' stuff on Extras far more than his stand-up. Izzard is just great in everything, from his stand-up (saw him in NYC last January) to The Riches. Just brilliant.

I stopped watching these 4 hour long borefests when people started posting the good bits (what, like 10 minutes total) on the web. I can read who won, watch that one moment people are talking about, and save myself a lot of time.

I used to be interested in the results, just to see what was worth watching. Then I realised that the they often picked shiatty movies and as long as you had a retard living in the holocaust then you were going to win.

I used to think that as a movie watcher I looked for different things in a movie than people actually working in the industry looked for to judge a movie on its excellence, but now I think it's just the marketing campaign the studios do for the movies. There is also the understanding that movies that are otherwise amazing but don't meet the "serious" criteria are dismissed. Granted I will fully admit that I am an idiot who would give Fassbender an Oscar for playing Magneto. [Not that he didn't earn it with Hunger.]

Don't know whole that is, but I whole-heartedly agree with you that he's really just not that funny. I , for a very breif time thought maybe he wa s comic genius, and then i realized, no, actually he's just a bully and a bit of dick. That show that seems to exist solely so he can show the world what a provincal dullar his PA is is a perfect example. It's not funny, it's mean-spirited, and anytime the poor guy seems to have enjoyed himself or is on the brink of a revelation Ricky cuts him off and with barely contained sadistic glee tells Karl what the next awful thing he's got to do is

I still like Gervais. The British Office was great, and refreshing to watch if only because that it could never work in the US. Extras had its moments too, especially with Patrick Stewart and the scene with the agent getting caught whackin it to a nuddie pen.

Gonad the Ballbarian: Funniest comic alive...

I think the team of Merchant and Gervais are great. Merchant is funnier, but he's too awkward-looking to be successful on screen. They're like the Simon and Garfunkel of comedy and Gervais is Garfunkel.

2011-11-17 11:53:21 PM
I understand people that don't like Gervais, but his hosting was the best in a long time. Anyone that thinks it wasn't funny is too hung up on who was telling the jokes.

Yes, the feigned outrage for months afterwards was really annoying. It will be again, too, but it's easy enough to tune out.

2011-11-18 12:21:08 AM
Yeah, instead they should have gotten...uh...Whoopi Goldberg...or uh....that guy on that one show.... Shut up, hosers, Gervais was the best possible choice. That is, unless you like worshiping celebrities.

2011-11-18 08:51:51 AM
Gervais was funny until he decided to center a lot of his work around the fact that he is an atheist and anyone who isn't is an idiot.

He should take a cue from Ellen. She was funny and enjoying success until she started to center her work around being gay and the people who had an issue with it. Once she went back to just being a comedian instead of a "gay comedian", her career took back off.

I'm not an atheist or gay. But since I'm also not a bigot or narrow minded, I don't have any issue with those who are atheist or gay and dont' condemn their beliefs (or lack thereof). I'd just like the same consideration from them that they ask from others.
