Uh, what?

The state, demographically, is split. 1/3 is Dem, 1/3 if Rep and 1/3 is Independent. Brewer and Co are trying to gerrymander the redistricting map so they can make their super majority even more super majorityish.

If this is remotely true, that's great. But I'm not really optimistic about it.

Party affiliation aside, if you tell one group of people they are less than people, you will lose their support. Even for the average Hispanic Republican there are limits to how far they will go to vote against their own interests. Sure, they might vote against their economic interests, but when you tell them they should all be treated like criminals just for being brown and existing... you have a problem.

This whole immigration thing the Republicans have done in the last few years is almost like whole civil rights thing. Push the Hispanics a bit harder and they'll lose their votes forever, just like they did with the blacks.

You don't see how telling a large and growing group of citizens they are less-than human will cause them to vote for someone that doesn't think they're less-than human?

I wasn't responding directly to you in my post, just the headline and the article. You are right though. 1070 is having some well placed backlash. But I don't think that backlash is anywhere near enough to make Arizona a swing-state.

I'll believe it when I see it on Tuesday, November 6, 2012

True, and you may get backlash for taking that job away from Florida.

/Lived in Arizona for a bit. The VOTERS are very conservative, but there are a lot of non-voters who, if they are motivated to vote in 2012, could change the landscape. Just ask Russell Pearce.

But in order to target illegals which is code for targeting Mexicans, you have to interrogate all brown people.

Now, if I travel to AZ and don't have my passport and they decide I look illegal, boom... I get to spend the next few weeks in an immigration cell until I can get someone to get a hold of my birth certificate proving I was born in this country.

It's just like the old poll-tax. It was written to say it could apply to anyone, but was used in an disenfranchise blacks. Sure it could have been applied to white people, but was really only used against blacks. Same thing with this AZ law... it says it targets illegals, but will be used to harass Hispanics.

The law targets anyone who looks like they might be there illegally.

Hint: They're not targeting Swedish people.

Yes but to the eye, you can't tell citizenship, and SB1070 allows the police to ask for documentation. As a result, the legal resident Hispanics are being harassed.

The law targets Hispanics indiscriminately and demands anyone who is guilty of being brown produce papers.

It targets citizens too.

Of course not! That would be racist, and since they are clearly NOT racist, they would never dream of it.

They can easily detect illegals by pulling over every 1980-1992 minivan and/or listening for trumpets and accordion music.

As long as the electoral college is winner take all, gerrymandering won't do a damn thing about the Presidential races.

Just more BS from all the America haters who push Illegal Alien Amnesty

The GOPs biggest problem is that they fail to listen to their voters, and, a large number of Democrats and Independents, who want the border sealed and all the illegal aliens deported. Before SB 1070 passed...a state referendum just like SB 1070 passed in AZ with 75% approval.....so it is BS for anyone to say that getting tough on illegals means losing votes

The GOP loses voters on the issue because they play weak...placate to the Illegal Alien groups and the Hispanic Racist groups (La Raza, MEChA, LULAC, etc)...and do not listen to the vast majority of voters who want Border Security and Illegal Aliens deported

Hmmm... Not sure if serious.

I'm an American and my only agenda is to keep the 4th amendment intact and to keep the govt from imprisoning people because they cannot meet the vague standard that AZ determined for innocence of the crime of "looking illegal"

2011-11-16 08:15:08 PM
The surest sign that the Republican party is doomed is that they are taking what should have been their new socially conservative, religious base and shiatting all over them. There's only so many white people left in the country folks, and guess what? They're not making kids anymore.

My niece and her husband (a legal immigrant from Argentina) are currently stuck in Arizona and desperately trying to get out. It's gotten so bad that he has asked her not to speak Spanish to him in public. She was trying to get him in an English class so he could get better at it and was grilled by the person in charge of that more than they were by immigration - and more humiliatingly as well. Why would citizens who may still speak with a strong accent or legal immigrants want to stay in a climate like that?

This. Similar nonsense had the effect in California of switching over numerous can't-be-bothered conservative Hispanics into raving liberals, simply because the WHITE proponents of the various laws refused to distinguish between legal brown citizens and illegal brown non-citizens. The LAW may be targeted at illegals, but the RHETORIC is aimed at anyone who looks like one.

Since the 2000 elections people have been paying attention to this "red state vs. blue state" stuff and drawing hard and firm conclusions based on a sample size of 3 elections. Bill Clinton won Arizona in 1996. Since that time the GOP have won 3 uniquely strong candidates in the state in the last three Presidential elections. Bush, a evangelical bilingual Spanish speaking evangelical christian from the Southwest who had extremely moderate positions on immigration ran twice. If there was any candidate who could unite the warring factions of the angry white male and the socially conservative catholic latino, it was Bush. Then of course the native son McCain. McCain still had to stop his campaign swing in late Summer of 2008 to fly back to Arizona and rally the troops because Obama was gaining so much ground on him. McCain only ended up with 54% of the vote, about as much as Obama ended up winning Colorado by. Even putting the immigration reform off the table, the GOP are not going to run anyone in 2012 as attractive to the Arizona voters as Bush or McCain. If Romney wins, the GOP will most definitely have a "Southwest" problem as his blue blooded northeastern Wall Street persona will win him no favors with the independents there, to speak nothing of his religion among the evangelicals.

Is Obama a favorite to win Arizona in 2012? I would say probably not (although current polling says otherwise). However, it most certainly a swing state and a state the GOP will have to spend time and resources to defend. Historically and statistically, Obama has a better chance of flipping Arizona than the GOP have of flipping Pennsylvania or Iowa, and you'll hear the media punditry go on and on about how they're swing states.
