Social Networking is sooo 2007

That's just sad.

I'm surprised they didn't acquire myspace.

Microsoft is just a bunch of old guys, crossing off the days, waiting for their pension to pay up.

You know who else liked to be late?

Unlike Google they'll be smart and never release it to the public.

Hate on M$ all you want, they'll never go away.

Where the Googles of the world believe "the early bird gets the worm", Microsoft has always believed "it's the second mouse that gets the cheese".

They were that way, even when they were young.

Cool, sounds like a great place for low IQ M(ust) C(onsult) S(omeone) E(lse) "engineers" to discuss licensing complexities, activation problems, closed systems, bugs, exploits and poor design.

It's amazing what Topolsky lets pass some times.

"Note that Socl is a research project, so it's possible that it won't ever get released as a mainstream product, but we're hearing it's still going to be tested publicly."

Really? It's a research project, but we're writing the article to make Microsoft look bad. Given how much MS is invested in Facebook, I wouldn't be surprised if the stuff thought up here just got transferred over.

This is the same site that rated the iPhone 4S as better than the Galaxy S II. I hate to say it, but Engadget is far less biased with the old editing team gone.

"Screening the other social networks got you feeling blue?"
errrrr.....
"Being social over dinner? Outside the porch door screen it's blue skys..."
mmmmm... no....
"Even Socl will have a BSOD! Share this with friends!"
meh...

Also, can't we spell anymore? Socl? wtf

They may be late, but it's usually because they sat around watching all the other guys get the bugs work out, then find some creative way of utter destroying the competition (see Xbox).

This should be interesting.

Yeah, but the early birds didn't have massive market share and a completely captive audience. No one is leaving Facebook anytime soon.

If they release this, it won't be for the mass market. It will be to compete against IBM Connections or Jive Engage for corporate users.

Peki: utter destroying the competition (see Xbox).

Have they started making a profit off the Xbox yet, or is it still an Office loss-leader/tax writoff?

It will totally blow Xoom.com out of the water!

Xbox is the exception to the rule, and MS got there because the two main competitors dropped the ball (Sega first, then Sony). And the Wii completely dominated.

It's hard to think of much else where MS has made a difference in the past 5-10 years.

I'm thinking of switching my dev tools, because MS are just losing out. Startups are going with PHP, Ruby on Rails. Mail is going to switch away from Exchange to hosted email like Gmail. The death of MS is going to take years, possibly decades. It'll be like GM, I think.

But a lot of people want to.

If someone comes up with an easy, intuitive site that doesn't have stupid things like forcing people to use their legal names and isn't entirely invasive (I am SO tired of almost every site I visit trying to get me to share it with my Facebook) -- people will leave.

It took almost a year for people to pretty much evacuate MySpace and head over to Facebook. And that was because Facebook was clearly better. Something will be better than Facebook. It's definitely not Google+, but maybe this could be the one. Maybe Diaspora. Who knows? But something will -- too many people really do want to leave FB, but don't see an alternative right now.

OMG I love Exchange, I don't know why but it makes me warm and fuzzy.

Look at the MS Surface computing they've been doing for a few years now... MSFT has had some good successes yet not touted them so much.

I'm playing Duke Nukem Forever on the Surface while listening to the new Deltron 3030 album, so I might one day soon be getting a kick out of this reply...

Social Networking Steve Ballmer is sooo 1987 2007

That took more than a little editing.

A recent ZDNET article described how the Microsoft braintrust wanted to release a Windows tablet with no email support. It took bgates[nospam-﹫-backwards]tfosorcim*com to come back and scotch that bit of insanity.

I wonder if it will rival Bob in how many people actually use it.

Actually, I don't wonder at all. Don't care much either. Just like to make fun of MS.

Maybe instead of a Friends list, you can generate a Bullies list. People who force you to give them virtual money. It can be a real nerd's anti-social network. People can be rated by how many "not friends" they have.

That sounds more like a sort of framework project to test the integration of various sub-projects than anything they actually intend to take to market. If you're designing, say, a way to watch youtube clips as a party on the web, you sort of need a context to test it from a technical and marketing perspective.
