The freaking British Crown during the American Revolution was more popular than Congress.

Wait wait wait.

You're telling me that liberal voters are pissed at the House, conservative voters are pissed at the Senate, independent voters are pissed at both, and non-voters look down their noses at all three of the other groups?

I am shocked and amazed.

Hmmm... the BP oil spill has a higher approval rating than congress. That's disturbing on a couple of different levels.

None of it matters anyways. Congress doesn't work for you and they don't give a fark what you think. As long as they keep the masters happy (and they are), the gravy will keep flowing.

Paris Hilton? This popularity rating (from 2005, even) is relevant how? Like there isn't something we hate equally that has come up a little more recently. I am disappoint.

Exactly. Congressional approval rating means zippo. You have to look at the approval rating of each member within their district, and the approval rating of each Senator within their state. Until those ratings change, the individual members have no incentive to act.

Actually, I hate Congress and my congressman is an idiot. Or, more accurately, a partisan hack.

I get your point, though. $$$ says we have most of the same idiots after Nov 2012 as we do today.

People hate congress because they hate each other. The country is split down the middle and neither side Is happy because neither can have their way. This split is reflected in congress and the voters have elected reflections of themselves--unhappy douchebags that are upset unless they get 100% of what they want and get it for free.

They are further pissed off because our constitution is designed to prevent absolute rule going to whoever gets 50.5 percent of the vote.

As long as ideologically locked idiots keep electing idiologiclly locked idiots we'll stay exactly where we are.

How to improve government.

Step 1: Stop rooting for politicians like they are athletes.

"I like the guys who are dressed in red, and have the Elephant mascot!" (No matter what they say)

Step 2: Realize that your vote isn't a bet.

"I voted democrat and the Democrats won!" (There are more than 2 teams on the field)

Step 3: Realize they don't care about you. They care about them, you care about you. Force them to care about you by voting out the ones who don't listen to you.

"He wants to cut my taxes!" (and cut your benefits. Stop voting against your own interests)

Step 4: Realize that dumb people make dumb decisions. Vote for the guy who knows more than you.

"I like her, she's folksy / hot / speaks in 5 second sound-bites"

So vote Republican?

No, both sides are not equal. One side has bent over backwards to compromise. The other side's idea of compromise is getting everything they want.

100% subjective scale. Simply judge them by how close what they advocate is to your ideals or how well their arguments and speeches are able to change your mind about your ideals. Trying to argue that someone is a bad or dishonest or inflexible negotiator, as compared to someone else who is also negotiating, is not productive or credible.

For once (and during all times of crisis) the American public wants their politicians to be more, and do more. They are doing less.

Democrats want more progressive government, Republicans want more conservative government, and moderates want them to just pick a lane and stick with it.

Sadly, the corpocracy is doing just fine.

100% serious. Take this argument to the extreme. One side says "let's ship all the black people back to Africa" and the other side says, "No, let's let them continue to live where they are and give them the full rights of citizens." Is it noble compromise to only forcibly ship half of them back to Africa? Applauding or condemning compromise is 100% subjective and depends strongly on the thing being debated. Raising marginal rates in a recession doesn't rise to the level of human rights, sure, but it is something that a lot of people feel just doesn't work.

Congress right now is like a shiatty contractor. You pay for them to fix up your kitchen, but while one side is trying to install the cabinetry, the other is ripping screws out of their hands and demanding that we use nails because their cousin owns a nail factory. Then, while one person is trying to put in the garbage disposal, the other is standing there yelling at them that they're not doing it right and the screws have to go in the holes before you put the disposal in because Jesus says so.

In the end, you wind up with a half-built kitchen that can't be used for anything, and is leaking gas into the room. It's just a matter of time before the house explodes.

It's a great time for many of you, and many Americans, to consider a third party. I suggest looking into ones that probably fit your political views much better such as the Libertarian Party (if you like OWS), Constitution Party (if you like Tea Party), Green Party (if you are far left liberal environmentalist), and others.

This is not to say that you can't vote for candidates from the mainstream parties. When it comes down to the Presidential one it's certainly a good idea to pick the lesser of two evils. However, when it comes down to Congress, Governorships, and state legislature it's a great idea to pick the party you belong to.
