Now, that sounds pretty cool...

2011-11-16 12:49:50 PM
"Must speak Russian"... I wonder how some of the original space race folks feel about that?

D'oh, not much demand for CS people, I guess.

You forgot "must have perfect vision w/o any corrections/medical procedures".

/sister was qualified but for that
//well. not the russian part. :-|

Ok NASA, you got your greenlight! Stop spamming the queue with your job posting.

I must break them

2011-11-16 01:45:35 PM
Pay scale: 62 - 145K USD a year.

/Which is a hell of a lot less than I expected

I'd only consider it if the airlines accepted NASA milage in their frequent-flyer programs.

gameshowhost: You forgot "must have perfect vision w/o any corrections/medical procedures".

It says "or able to achieve perfect vision with corrective lenses."

Is the blood pressure requirement with or without medicine?

Do they still do centrifugal testing during training? After the moon landing I saw a show about astronaut training. Then I made my older brother's day when I told him I wanted to spin around in the dryer for a few minutes so I could get used to it.

NASA needs to go. It's a Cold War era program that hasn't produced a single advance since the space shuttle, which isn't saying much. If it were up to them, the taxpayers would be throwing billions at them each year so they could continue to fly their Chia Pets into orbit and monitor their growth. I put NASA on par with the post office, Freddie Mae/Freddie Mac, and ... argh .. can't remember the other one. Sorry. But regardless, NASA is a waste and any of their salvageable programs need to be ported to private industry.

Why do you need a college degree to be an astronaut? Bruce Willis didn't need one and he saved our asses back in WWII.

/Pearl Harbor, never forget!

Actually, they don't accept faxed applications.

Your Sister is going to be pissed when she finds all the Google images of astronauts with glasses.

I'm somewhat surprised. It never occurred to me that there would be a shortage of would-be astronauts. In fact, I thought that most of the people who complete the training never even get to go into space.

heh at this place I used to work at they had these huge centrifuge machines they would use to extract water from material. it was hot, sweaty, back breaking work loading and unloading that thing all day long. so they had this huge retarded guy doing it. One day I was out in the dyehouse and he had climbed into the damn thing and wanted me to shut the lid and turn it on so he could ride in it.

Don't know Russian yet, but I'm willing to learn. Vision is correctable, and I'll have a PhD in physics in a year. Totally applying. Just so I can get my rejection letter.

Hmm...I'm 5'6", have a bachelor's in an engineering discipline, have naturally perfect vision, but I don't speak Russian.

Oh, and I hate flying. Hate it.

But space is super cool...not like my wife would let me be an astronaut anyways. Too risky.

I've met a number of astronauts over the years as part of my job, and there's a joke that we tell:

Q: How do you know when there's an astronaut in the room?
A: He'll tell you.

Sheesh people, even the Fox News article gets it mostly right, they'll teach you Russian.
