At this point, it's been longer since HL2 than the time between 1 and 2.

I'm old now. Can I at least know how the story ends before I die?

Hell, at LEAST give us "Meet the Pyro!"

Started playing TF2 again recently, a little bit. For some reason I only get servers to appear on the browser about half the time.. And even when I get a full list half the ones I try to join won't respond.

Otherwise I have next to nothing in all these kickass new weapons and I keep getting blown away by crazy shiat I've never seen before. The game is still a lot of fun, though.

and also giving their games away for free. I love the valve people. None of their games are my absolute favorite, but I have sincerely liked everyone. The really understand something critical about gaming. The know how to pace a game which in turn sets an emotion. Their attention to pacing, gameplay, user-friendliness, and atmosphere really sets them apart from most other game makers. And by user friendly, I mean, open to be modded, inoffensive DRM, cheap prices (relatively), low system requirements, and very bug-free gaming.

/ of course, they also take 3x as long to make a game. but, I can wait. The worst thing in the world is really wanting something that ends up being a piece of crap. I'd much rather wait a couple years for something great than get crap today.
// just spit out a third episode. I don't want a new game just yet (like the difference between hf1 and hf2)

If they're not going to get HL3 done anytime soon, you would think Valve could at least give the Black Mesa folks a hand in finally getting the thing done. At this point, I'm losing hope of ever seeing either done.

On the old one-to-ten scale:
Valve seems ok with releasing a 10 every few years, with lots of hats to fill in the space.
Most others seems ok with releasing a few 1's every year, and charging $30 for hat DLC.

I have this problem fairly often and there was some chatter about it in the forums a while ago - I think it has something to do with syncing to the Steam Cloud.
There are a couple of files in the Steam/UserData folder for TF2 that if you delete them, it forces it to properly refresh the lists the next time you restart the game.. If I were currently at home I'd look up the exactly file path and file names for you. I'll look it up and post later tonight if anyone is interested.

I'm giving HL3...10 more years. And then, then I'll be really angry Valve! You hear me?!

2011-11-16 01:46:12 PM
I've got a great idea about this hat business. Why don't they make a few smaller hats, rather than one big one. It would likely take less time overall, without reducing the quality of the product. Right? You could produce several good quality small hats - like a kippah or fez - in the same time it would take to make a large bowler or sombrero of similar quality. You could then sell these smaller hats as soon as they were produced, letting people enjoy said hats more often.

I've been lusting after Black Mesa for a while now. I always thought it would be a great interim thing while I waited for 3. Now I have no idea which will arrive first, but either way it's not soon.

Games companies are of the opinion that if they just tighten their grip a little bit more... everything'll be fine. Ya see, those idiots at Valve have it all wrong, you need to make a seriously restrictive and invasive DRM scheme, charge for every little DLC, throwin some game breaker 'pay 2 win' stuff and then and only then will you start to see some of those torrent downloads converted in to sales.

The office recently started playing tf2 at lunch when I was back at school. Little did people know, I've sunk more hours into that game than I'd feel comfortable mentioning. I mainly play scout or demoman, but spy is my third most played class. I decided to go spy the first time I played. Long story short, I was officially banned from being a spy because project leaders get upset when you backstab them over and over again.

I recently picked up TF2 after playing the shiat out of team fortress back in the day and the only thing that irritates me about it is not the micro-transactions for better equipment or anything like that...it's the attitude of the people that sink hunfreds of dollars into the game and then get upset that a person like me is "free to play".

Like hell I'm paying 20 bucks for a special gun that gives me a slight damage boost or 3 bucks for a key to open some crate that I discovered. psh.

for the record I have shaken the rust off and currently own people's face as a sniper or heavy, esp. on defence. Also, the change they made to sniper rifles is a little weird, but I see why they did it. the old sniper rifles were one-shot killing machines. Now you need to actually aim for the head and wait for the gun to power up before you really start finishing off opponents.

I really enjoy Valve games (though I've never tried TF2, I'm too old for deathmatch shooters), but I've vowed to not buy any more of their products until they release Half Life 3 or Episode 3.

I know they won't notice, I just don't want to reward them for canceling a game for no good reason that was important to me.

Don't forget stripping single player content to sell as DLC (Catwoman...) and online passes! Because OMG all of a sudden Gamestop is strangling the industry!!!

Doesn't help that a lot of gamers are spineless and just accept this bullshiat as something that's just going to happen.. It won't if you don't pay for it, moron!

Um... who pays for weapons? Achievements and drops are where it's at (as well as the tf2 raffle site). But if you enjoy playing it a lot, might as well spend $5 on 2 keys to be able to trade for more weapons!! And get a free hat!!

Absolutley. Gamers are the cancer killing gaming, just look at the "boycotts" of things like Modern Warfare 2 (I won't post the Steam picture), those self same boycotters then run around buying all the damn DLC.

Someone please teach them that boycot means doing without the shiney. Not pirating it or buying second hand but doing without.

As for the likes of Gamestop they have 1, maybe 2 generations of console left before they're kaput and they know it, hence all their shinnanigans.

I see the drops all the time, but I have witnessed a few people already bragging about how much coin they dropped to get the best shiat immediately while trying to talk shiat about the people that don't spend money on it.

I know what you mean, but it's not the purchasing of items that people are whining about, it's the people who are playing and never bought the game, i.e. the ones who started playing when TF2 became free, and really suck at playing it.

Plus, I think some of them are just butthurt that they paid $20 for something that Valve later gave away, but whatever. My only complaint was that after they went F2P, all the good servers were full for weeks.

Looking forward to this fix. I usually only visit two or three servers so I just join to see who is on.

What is the TF2 raffle site? It make sense to buy a key for $2.50 (or did they go up?) and that should let you trade for any standard/vintage weapon, and maybe the more common hats. Speaking of which is there a good site that tracks trade value for items? I ignore trading offers since I don't know the value of stuff. I'd like the max's head but that seems to be out of my price range, makes sense since it was tied to the purchase of a $60 game.

Your router sucks at the internet.

Basically, the way TF2 pings the server browser is by sending a whole bunch of requests to the router/cable modem/whatever all at once. Some crappy ones freeze up. Look for a firmware update or get a new one.

The main things you see people trade for are special event items (like the halloween costume pieces) and Strange weapons (the ones that gain rank as you use them)
Strange weapons used to be really hard to find, but the last several crate series, from #26 up, have been pretty much guaranteed to give you a strange weapon for a particular class, and if they did give you something else it was probably a hat or unique item.

Most strange weapons can usually be traded for another strange weapon or usually for 2 reclaimed or 1 refined metal, depending on which weapon it is. Prices are on the lower end for the classes that have had the special crates out already.
There are two main TF2 wikis out there - both have pretty good info including what's in the crate series (anything prior to series 31 or 32 is not available to find in game anymore)

I also highly recommend the website Willitcraft.com (new window). You enter your steam profile name, and it will check all of the items you have currently in inventory and calculate everything you can potentially craft based on what you have, and the recipes for those items.

LiberalWeenie: I've never tried TF2, I'm too old for deathmatch shooters

Get it free. Go heavy. Find, buy, or steal a sandwich. Stay out of open spaces, because sniper headshots will still one-shot kill you. (Also, scout scattergun shots to the back, which gets old fast, since heavy machine gun + hyperactive little [redacted] + server lag telling you where they WERE and not where they ARE means you can never hit the [redacted]). Enjoy coming around a corner, and blowing apart 4 people in 5 seconds, eating your sandwich for full health, and moving on. At low to medium range, you are pretty much guaranteed to win or at least tie.

/Ever since I went Eyefinity, I'm at ~2:1 kill rate with this strategy.
//Only problem is that you can't dodge and there's about a second delay for unloading the miningun, but since I lack the twitch reflexes for FPS's, I'm okay with being the tank.

But that's just general good play in any FPS without friendly fire.

As above, however you probably want to jump around corners since you can spin up the minigun in midair and it doesn't slow you down like it does when you are on the ground.

The game takes a little getting used to, it is pretty much the counter-everything to the "realistic" 1 shot kill games that seem to dominate the marketplace, almost all the guns shoot bullets that you can see and are semi-dodgeable, There's a /ton/ of ridicilous game modes like pushing a cart along tracks into the other teams base, having a "race" with said carts, ect.

The game is VERY fun, Yes occasionally you will run into a cheater, and occasionally you'll run into a sniper that dominates your whole team, there's like 2000+ servers, just chose another one. Remember to lead your targets even with bullet guns, just a little to account for lag

Get a few hours in, figure out what class you like, all classes have a 2nd set of items that are unlocked with achievements, and a bunch more that are randomly unlocked as you play (or you can buy them)

Although you only have to look at the Space Pirates & Zombies forums to see how well that's working out for them: SPAZ gets released and the beta users all want to move from Impulse to Steam... so they can escape Gamestop.
