This doesn't sound like a trick to lure you into rooting for the Packers to lose and leave the Dolphins as the only undefeated team for a whole season in NFL (Super Bowl era) history.

Should I point out that the article doesn't say that there won't be the annual toast when the last team gets their first loss, and only says that one member of that team is pulling for the Packers?

Nope, I'll remember that this is fark, and everyone knows that only trolling headlines full of lies by retarded submitters go green.

It is that time of year again? Already?

Hi guys, it's me! You know, Mercury Morris. Of the '72 Dolphins. Remember? The perfect season? Well, I just wanted to let you know that I'm still alive, and that I will be back next year when a team is 9 and 0 to remind you again!

If they go 19-0 and Aaron Rodgers retires, isn't he one of the 10 best QB's of all time?

The 1972 Miami Dolphins are are the only team to make it all the way through the regular season (14-0) and playoffs (3-0) with a perfect record

That should be only NFL team. The 1948 Cleveland Browns went 15-0 to win the league title. Because they played in the All-American Football Conference, and the whole league didn't merge with the NFL, the NFL doesn't recognize it. But it happened. At one point, the Browns were undefeated!

coolio mack: If they go 19-0 and Aaron Rodgers retires, isn't he one of the 10 best QB's of all time?

No. He goes down as having one of the best runs of all time (season and a half). He is playing (probably) as good if not better than anyone ever. Put a 4-5 year string of those together and then maybe. As much as I hate Peyton, he probably is the best ever.

I am a huge Packers fan, but the likelihood of them going 19-0, or even winning the Super Bowl (or getting there) is fairly slim. Why? There defense is very Jekyl and Hyde. They tend to disappear in the end of games only to return for one last play. On the offensive side no one can touch them, but their defense can (and has) gotten torched on many occasions. They let the bolts back into the game and almost let it slip away. Sooner or later their defense will give up a game. Hopefully this will be in the regular season and not the playoffs.

The 1984 49ers went 19-0, the league just doesn't recognize it. Dwight Hicks wasn't touching that Steelers receiver, and that PI call was bullshiat. The Niners won that game.

I'd just asssume they stop talking about the perfect stuff...i don't care what the regular season record is, so long as they win the big game...last year they were 10-6 and I couldn't care less since they won the Super Bowl.

Yeah, about 10 minutes after posting I thought about Terrell Davis. I was thinking along the lines of having 2 rings, a MVP and being the all time QB rating leader - but you gotta have that 8-10 year period of play.

People can no longer say "best ever"...it's just ridiculous trying to compare QBs from the 80-90s with QBs of today, let alone QBs from the 30s-70s, etc. You bascially have to say he's the 'best of his era', but 'best ever' is just silly.

The 1929 Packers went 12-0-1, winning the championship. The tie game was 0-0. Since ties were not counted in the standings at that time, they had an official winning percentage of 1.000.

As a huge (but very quiet) Manning fanboi, I have to say I have no idea how he would have performed in previous eras. I'm just a casual fan of football, but just reading the stuff in the Bathroom Reader gives me enough of an idea of just how much the game changes from decade to decade. You can say "Oh people didn't wear much padding, you have more physicality" but then you say that today you have morbidly obese players going all sumo on one another at incredible speeds. The only way to have a "greatest ever" would be to put their teams in a round robin situation at their peak, playing by different era rules for each game.

I can say that in my eyes Peyton has been the greatest quarterback of his generation, but young NFL quarterbacks today have been watching Peyton their whole playing career in high school and college, comparing their performance to him and (hopefully) learning from his work ethic. That means that hopefully we are going to have an era of many Peytons, many great quarterbacks, and hopefully some of them will eclipse him. I would LOVE to see Aaron Rogers eclipse Peyton and Brady.

But this is supposed to be about the '72 Dolphins and the media's annual interest in their studious disinterest in who is undefeated.

Agreed. It's worst with QBs, but you see it with other offensive positions as well. Chris Johnson has the single-season yards from scrimmage record, but who is going to say he had a better year than Jim Brown or OJ ever did? Randy Moss broke Jerry Rice's touchdown record, but it took him 4 more games.

Defense is a little more consistent, but even then, it's hard to compare someone like Deion Sanders to Night Train Lane just because of the hugely different roles they played on the field, even though both lined up as cornerbacks.

BolloxReader: I would LOVE to see Aaron Rogers eclipse Peyton and Brady.

As a Packers fan, me too.

It's hard to say how modern QBs would play 'back then', but I'd guess they'd get roughed up a LOT more than most of them would care for.

While it's impossible to really compare different eras, I think it's closer to a wash then most people give the newer crop of QBs credit for.

Sure, "back then" you could maul receivers down the field, and the QB position wasn't such a protected class. Nowadays though, while it's easier for receivers to run their routes and for the QB to finish a season upright and non-concussed, the defenses are much more complex and varied than anything Unitas or Bobby Layne ever saw. So are the very playbooks and schemes the QBs nowadays have to digest.

Today's football is a nerdy, calculated one.

Lifetime Marino homer here, but I have to agree with mjbok. Looking at the stats, it's not even really close. Manning's been putting up obscene numbers his entire career. He's only had -- what, one or two seasons with less than 4,000 yards? A solid year passing for BrittFarr or Marino is a meh year for Fetushead statistically.

And obviously Manning's got a ring.

Manning probably understands the game better than any QB in history. He can't run. His arm strength is good, but not phenomenal. But he's got the "brainy QB" thing in addition to being solidly talented, physically.

ihatedumbpeople: It's hard to say how modern QBs would play 'back then', but I'd guess they'd get roughed up a LOT more than most of them would care for.

On the other hand, they'd probably adapt and be a lot better at attacking the relatively simple defenses. It's kind of like acting like AL pitchers don't want to hit, like they hadn't been hitters for most of their lives...athletes love competition and for the most part, quarterbacks like taking hits and getting up because it proves they can handle it as much as anyone. Now, come the next day they might disagree with themselves, but for the most part, the good QBs wouldn't have a problem with it.

They complain about it now because they know it's against the rules and if they're going to take that shot, they want the free yardage.

People that lose their jobs complain way more than people who never had jobs to begin with - it hurts more when you're accustomed to an "easier" life to take that step back.

What's weird about the '72 Fins' season was just how insanely easier their regular season schedule was. They played 8 divisional games, in a division were the #2 team went 7-7 (with 6 divisional games against teams other than Miami), and the best team they played in the regular season finished with the 9th best record in the league and failed to make the playoffs.

The '07 Pats, by contrast, played 2 teams tied for the 2nd best record (it was a three way tie), the two teams with the 5th best record, 2 of the 5 teams tied for the 7th best record, 4 divisional leaders (which is the most possible), and 6 total playoff teams. Their non-divisional games were against 1 division that had 0 teams finish below .500 (despite all losing to the Pats) and was #2 in overall division win% (the other division was okay, but not great), and their 2 flex schedule games were two AFC division winners.

Yes but I would call that "undefeated" not "perfect". There has only been 1 perfect season and Miami has it. Not saying you don't have a point mind you but I think the thing we can all agree on is thank FSM the Pats can't claim this as well

This is absolutely true. However the QB position (except for Tebow) is very different than it was in the past. In the "modern era" I don't think anyone compares to Peyton...yet. The great QB's of the past would have just as many problems today as QB's of today would have had in the past.

ihatedumbpeople: Season and a half?? More like this is his fourth good season. (new window)

I know statistically he's been impressive from the get go. However, outside of rings there is one stat that trumps all others: wins. Up until they went on their run at the end of last year it was a losing season and a wildcard berth. There have been many good to great quarterbacks that never got the attention or notice because they were on average teams. This will be the first time the Packers will win their division with AR under center.

Would you rather have a great QB who doesn't win or a middling QB that does?

Oh, don't get me wrong, I would not call that a perfect season. Hell, at that time there wasn't even a championship game. The team with the best winning % was the champion, and they didn't even all play the same number of games.

The Bears also pulled an '07 Pats twice. They were undefeated until they lost in the championship game in both 1934 and 1942.

Starks, Kuhn, Green, and Rodgers can all run well enough they can't ignore a GB run. Besides that, the point of a run game is so you don't have all your recivers covered, but between playcalling and catching talent, they could rush 1 guy and Rodgers would complete a pass, or scramble for 5.
