Mr. Coffee Nerves: Revenge at last for not being able to climb the rope.

He was actually pretty trim in high school. You'd think he'd be a little more grateful.

Science, math and gym teachers should make more than Governors and any member of the Governor's staff. Sorry, they are just more valuable.

Sensual Tyrannosaurus: Haha, it's funny because he's fat. Get it? Subby is so clever.

No it's sad because as a nation we are getting fatter and fatter each generation because of the lack of value placed on physical exercise. Also most of the gym teachers I've met also teach other classes in addition to gym. This combined with the article yesterday about the GOP promoting pizza and french fries in school lunch programs has me convinced the GOP has stock in heart stents and cholesterol medications.

A lot of evidence suggests that a person's 'default weight' and metabolism is set in their earlier years.

If I were dictator, I'd push a whole lot more of the math/history/science to 16-22. When you have a little broader picture of where you're going to need this knowledge and can apply it to your real life. Honestly, most of the 'content' crap taught to under-15s is taught again to them in late HS/early college anyway, since it didn't connect to anything the first time. And I'd focus the under-15s a lot more on exercising and learning languages (things that 8-year-olds take to immediately, and are almost impossible for 20-somethings).

We have to make sure some poor people don't make significantly more than other poor people. So we can give more to the rich people.

Oh you don't have to tell me, I'm aware of the health issues facing our nation. I was simply responding to a Chris Christie thread in the appropriate fashion.

HAH. I laughed.

Also, stuff that NuttierThanEver said. If our kids stay fat, our health care companies profit. It also provides them with some kind of wedge against reform I'm sure, though I don't know how. I don't think the way they do, narcissistic and xenophobic (nevermind misanthropic) and...other words that end with -ic.

They're all jerks.

Philip Francis Queeg: Science, math and gym teachers should make more than Governors and any member of the Governor's staff. Sorry, they are just more valuable.

There were 3 gym teachers in the Akron public school district that made 106k+ last year not counting benefits. They work 4 days a week, 5 hours a day. Each one has 30+ years in the district and are protected by the union's seniority agreement. They actually laid off 9 teachers with less than 5 years of teaching to pay the 3 gym teachers salaries.

I can understand the purpose of PE at lower grade levels. It helps expose a lot of kids to activities they might not otherwise get involved in. However, by the time you get to high school, you're either involved in some some sport or you're not. I managed to get my high school to waive my PE requirement based on outside activities so I could take more of the classes I felt I needed.

Pretty sure Friday pizza day and french fries in the school cafeteria have very little to do with our obesity epidemic. They were school cafeteria staples long before our snowflakes started turning into snowballs.

yep, but it was not till the last 3 generations of kids that Gameboy, DS, Wii, Gameboy, World of Warcraft, Halo, texting and iPods were available to keep the kids constantly on their asses. Sure kids can have fries and pizza, but to encourage those (see yesterday's thread about the GOP fighting against healthier school lunch programs) while simultaneously demeaning the value of PE is a combination sure to worsent the obesity epidemic.
It's the same reason I encouraged my kids to play soccer instead of T-ball when they were little. They need to move, not stand out in right field picking their nose while some other kid tries to hit the ball 5 whole feet off of a tee.

And its football program brought in over 50 million dollars last year even though its just Rutgers....but I bet that money wasn't just spent on improving the teams locker room....I'd wager that some of the money paid for math and science related things.

Actually the money likely went to covering the expenses of the non-revenue sports, and because RU has so many, the athletic department lost money overall. But you're right, football isn't the problem, just an easy thing to point fingers at.

Rutgers football program LOST $2.9 million dollars in 2010. For that investment they achieved a spectacular 4-8 record.

If they need to cut some fat, don't cut actual education, cut a money losing, slave labor, minor league football team.

heh true - anyway, point was that I didn't always want to ride my bike or go play football or whatever but was made to because that's what you're supposed to do.

The ubiquity of electronics these days give kids more options when at home but that doesn't mean they should be given the option to be at home.

Part of the problem is 'where do you think they should go?' A substantial portion of the country's housing stock has been built since 1980 (the population has grown 50%, so duh). And very little built since 1980 is even slightly conducive to kids having the kind of freedoms I did in the 70s. The immediate neighborhood streets are low traffic, although with all the curves you don't have the long sight distances you do in older neighborhoods. Each little subdivision dumps out onto a mega-road. The well-intentioned sidewalks are put in by people who haven't walked outside a Walmart parking lot in 30 years. If you're lucky, you can get to one gorram Walgreens within a 2-mile bike ride and not crossing a 7-lane 45mph road. Some neighborhoods, not even that.

First off, my schools didn't have a single coach that just taught gym and nothing else.

Second, does a gym teacher require less of an education to do their job? I don't know.

Does a gym teacher have less responsibility in taking care of the kids? Nope, probably even more, since they have more physical safety issues to deal with.

Sounds like they should be paid just as much to me.

Should they make less than a chemistry teacher? Probably, but then again you could make the argument/comparrison for any two teaching specialties.

I'd make the argument that schools are not set up to deal with individual salary plans for every one of their employees - our local school district with 300 teachers and 6000+ students has exactly ONE human resource person. You could save money by paying gym teachers less than history teachers less than english teachers less than... with merit pay based on ratings/feedback/observations but you're going to need a significantly larger HR department to keep up with that on a yearly basis.

It depends. In middle school, we had one female (ha! hardly) gym teacher and one male gym teacher. They taught nothing but PE all day long. I don't remember them doing much. When we took the Presidential Fitness Test, they didn't even explain what each segment of the test was, they just turned us loose to take the test. Unsurprisingly, our school didn't exactly excel.

In high school we had multiple male coaches and a dreadful old hag of a female coach. All of them taught other classes, in varying degrees of tolerability and wretchedness. The one coach who was a good teacher, intelligent, and knowledgeable enough to teach an AP class was also banging a couple of female students (that I know of) and was sharing them with another coach. My opinion of the good teacher dropped considerable when I found out what he was doing in the field house. The girls in question were pretty troubled, and that smacks of exploitation.

You are wrong. Knowledge of the material is not all that is required to teach a subject to children 30 at a time. You will fail and those kids will hate math.

I understand your sentiment but while being an engineer means the material is trivial it won't make you a decent teacher. No lie, we had a "student teacher" come through here 3 years ago - he had 2 PhD's and held numerous patents - he might have known more about science and engineering than the rest of the science department combined for all I know but he was a disaster (I'm talking video montage of planes/trains/cars crashing in to things and bursting into flames disaster) in front of the kids. He could not relate any of his knowledge to a level they could begin to grasp.

Any coursework he might have taken on learning strategies, psychology or basically anything not math/science related must have been utterly lost on him. Fifty percent of people who graduate with a teaching degree leave the profession forever within 5 years - its not for everyone - he was so bad he didn't deserve the shot to screw up high school science for those few years.

beta_plus: ace in your face: He is right. Math and science are fairly difficult to figure out on your own. Having a good teacher is indispensable. Otoh, if you can't figure out how to run by yourself you are too farking stupid to live. Are our kids fat in america? Oh fark yes. Is it cured by better brighter gym teachers? No. Any farking idiot can throw a bag of basketballs on a court and have kids run around. Gym teachers are not as valuable as math and science teachers, period.

This. And it doesn't even take into account all of the horror stories of retired engineers who want to teach public school kids math & science in their golden years for free, but can't because they have to get pointless and expensive graduate degrees to satisfy union rules that pay PE teachers 6 figures.

/if you've passed PDEs and Thermo, I think you can handle 6th grade math

It's not to satisfy the union, it's to satisfy the state. And it's what's right. People should have teaching degrees in order to teach. It's not just knowing the material, it's knowing how to teach the material.

Be honest. How many supremely smart teachers did you have in college who couldn't teach. Period. I know this semester I have one. Last semester? Two.
