There used to be an arcade in front of my college campus, and I used to be pretty damn good at these things (mostly KoF and Tekken series games).

So one day I'm going in for an interview for a prospective research job at the old campus, and decide to swing by the arcade on a whim. There was the same old tekken machine, but the KoF machine had been upgraded to the current version (something like 6 iterations from the last version I had played). I looked into that screen and almost got seizures. It looked like you needed to command synaptic bypasses to actually play that game because there's no way you could send signals from your eyes to your brain and then to your fingers in time.

Or maybe I just needed to tell everybody else in the arcade to get off my lawn.

If I wanted to have seizure-inducing frantic license-driven gameplay assault my frontal lobe for hours, I'd play Super Smash Bros.

I remember one time my friend convinced me to play one of these, and I managed to do Zangief's ultra finishing move by just spinning the stick and jamming buttons because I didn't know WTF was going on.

Holy shiat, a Fark fighting game thread?! Let's do this!

I just picked up UMvC3 yesterday. Back in my MvC2 days, I was using Cammy, Capt. Commando, and Blackheart; none of those made MvC3. I was using Dormammu, Wesker, and Taskmaster in MvC3, but may switch to Hawkeye instead of Taskmaster now. We'll see.

I'm going to make an alternate team, though, to get me out of my typical zoning/control set. Maybe Iron Fist, Ryu, and Hulk.

Any Farkers looking for a match on Live: EIP. I'm not that good, to be honest; I'm a guy who likes the theory better than I can execute.

Also, obligatory in Marvel vs Capcom threads:
BIONIC ARM! Marn vs Combofiend (new window)
Clutch - PR Rog vs Viscant (new window)

since Capcom doesn't have a console-based Monster Hunter anywhere in the near future, i'll guess i'll just have to make do with Capcom vs My Little Pony.

In other words: you prefer the "special" version of fighting games for ages 6+
God forbid you be forced to press more than 2 buttons in some kind of sequence in order to play.

Smash Bros: BBBBBBBBABBABAAABBABBBABBABABABABA
MvC3: LP, LP, LK, LK, HP, HK. Forward, Down, Down+Forward + LP or HP

No, at this point? fark Capcom. For a variety of reasons.

But currently, yes, I'm still pissed about Megaman Legends 3. I'm also pissed that they half-seem to be *trolling* megaman fans.

Megaman Legends stage in MvC.

And then, there's DLC for Ultimate MvC III: Megaman X!...'s costume. As a skin for Zero. Not, you know, as a playable character.

No, actually, I prefer to be able to see and control the action on the screen without cinematic cut-scenes for every 75-hit air juggling, put the controller down and grab a snack while my friend is swapping characters in and out, combination that inevitably turns every fight into a competition to see who can make the other person fling their controller out the window first.

But that's just my preference. If you think your choice of Marvel vs. Capcom for a fighter somehow makes you special or better, then keep feeling that way. I won't stop you.

FTFA: Characters are thrown together and moves invented not because they're physically possible or even follow any kind of internal logic, but because they look cool on screen.

That's a load of crap. There's a lot of thought put into this game beyond what moves look cool. Not just as befits the individual characters, but in terms of where that character fits in the overall game.

Something MvC2 suffered from was that a large portion of the cast had too many similarities. MvC3 has 50 characters, but aside from the fact that most of them can do an elementary A->B->C->Launch into an air combo, that's where the similarities end.

Example. Newcomer Ghost Rider's moves revolve around his chain, allowing him the longest-range normals in the game. It makes sense, given his character. It also makes him unique among the cast. Frank West (of Dead Rising) takes pictures to level up, like he did in his own game. He's the only one with a level up mechanic. Rocket Raccoon relies on traps, Firebrand swoops and air combos... it's all very deliberate. This is magnified when you look at that each one is only a slot on a team of 3, and you need to pick out characters with complimentary assists, Delayed Hyper Combo compatibility...

Yes, it makes little sense on the surface to have gods battling photojournalists, talking animals, demons, radioactive spider-dudes. But not every fighting game needs to be Virtua Fighter.

That's because Zangief's Ultra I in SF4 is executed with a 720 motion and hitting all 3 punch buttons at the same time.

I don't get how people hate on other people's choice of fighting games. SSB, Tekken, MvC, what-have-you each have their own perks and preferences. Can't we all just get along and be glad we're not stuck playing Mace: The Dark Age?

Fighting is Magic has some beautiful animation for being an indie non-for-profit game.

Also, I wish if they ever make another Tatsunoko vs Capcom game, they include the MOSPEADA and Samurai Pizza Cat characters this time around.

I was almost a little disappointed that Capcom's side of TvC was absent from UMvC3. In this modern era of re-used models and DLC, I thought that would have been an easy buck for Batsu and co.

Agreed.

Also, I just want to play as Bad Bird and Speedy in a fighting game, I mean, they already have silly characters (not that speedy and bad bird were actually silly characters, just their design is vis a vis others)

I had to retire Taskmaster and Akuma from my team. Rolling Zero/Ryu/Dr. Doom now, with the mid/anchor spots open to change (but Doom may be permanent).

Zero changed up for the better. Hyper Buster is still a good keep away tool, but the special cancel allows for a lot more shenanigans. Dive kick change did some interesting things for crossup. Hitstun killed my BNB though.

The Ryu changes are beastly. He needed a true wavedash and Denjin mode is ridiculous.

sotua: I looked into that screen and almost got seizures. It looked like you needed to command synaptic bypasses to actually play that game because there's no way you could send signals from your eyes to your brain and then to your fingers in time.

I've always been pretty miserable/button mashy at fighting games, but when I looked up movesets for a couple games and people were comparing characters and moves based on number of frames, and which exact frame you had to start moves and hits, I knew it was a dead-end for me. I don't have the motivation to learn a game like that to that depth.

/ Link in Soul Calibur 2 was fun though

Also, loving Hawkeye and Nova. Tons of fun with the new characters!

I was playing the hell out of MvC 3. Then for some reason, I would start every match with half my energy gone. Couldn't figure out why it was doing that. I didn't see any handicap mode in the options. Finally, I just gave up. I might get this one though since I loved MvC 2.

Sounds like you turned on one of the missions. There are a few of them that involve you beating single player, winning a certain number of online matches, etc. with half health. You should be able to turn it off again in Mission Mode.

That might be what it is. For a little bit I was drinking while playing and may have done that on accident and didn't remember. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to check on it when I get home.

Once again, the early adopter gets screwed. I picked up the collector's edition on the first day, so I'm forced to rationalize my choice by telling myself that with 8 new characters at $5/pop, it's worth it.

I didn't get the collector's edition, but I was still an early adopter of the original. I think I'm going to wait a couple of months to buy Ultimate, just to make sure they don't announce a Super Turbo Ultimate version or anything.

That's not a "OH MAN WHAT'S WRONG WITH FIGHTING GAMES NOWADAYS GET OFF MY LINE" thing so much as it's a Marvel Vs. Capcom thing. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 has just as much nonsense chaos going on in high-end play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVTdAOb54xI&t=25m45s

It has twelve. I was in the same boat though, but I lucked out and Amazon gave me the game for 8 bucks even though I burned my 30 dollar credit in games about two weeks earlier with Uncharted 3. Needless to say... feeling pretty good about this purchase.
