I have been in offshore survival training. More or less, you spend all day in class learning how to get out of a crashed helicopter. For the final exercise, you were buckled in a seat that simulated a helicopter, blindfolded, put in the water and turned upside down. After the instructor tapped you on the shoulder, you could start your escape.

/the main thing I learned is that I didn't want to be in a whirly bird if it crashed in the drink.

//pauses to remember my friends that weren't so lucky to escape bird crashes.

Good for them, might as well get something out of that giant swimming pool.

They could use it to drown puppies and kittens for the local inhumane shelter.

/What?

I'm one of the original investors. I can't wait to get the check for my share in the mail.

It's like training to shut off the oil flow on a giant underwater oil blowout.

what a useless skill...

They don't even blindfold you anymore, at least not when I did my training a couple years ago. The training center in Galveston did that but since Ike hit, that one is no more. The other one, west of Houston has the more elaborate helicopter simulator (like the one FTFA) but doesn't blindfold anyone.

CSB:

I grew up down the street from and was friends with the one guy (out of 19 I think) that survived the helicopter crash off the coast of Newfoundland a couple years ago. I can only imagine the survivor's guilt he must have.
