Finally (and the one I'm looking forward to the most), Wild Eagle (Dollywood).

Dollywood has a great set of coasters

I don't see how that's a Superman roller coaster. You don't even get to fly through any rings.

Awesome. Will have to check this out on a trip back home after it opens. Last year I visited Dollywood for the first time in over a decade and really liked the new addition. The Mystery Mine was a hell of a lot of fun. The only unfortunate part of the trip was that temps were in the 100s all day, so I just about got heat stroke walking around the park.

Unless there's a whole hell of a lot more outside that picture, that looks to be one of the lamest, most boring coasters in history.

ds_4815: Since they're rather sparse on pics...

Manta (SeaWorld San Diego)

[cache.rcdb.com image 640x400]

Skyrush (Hersheypark). Surprisingly little renderings to be found.

[worldwidebrian.com image 640x309]

Superman Ultimate Flight (Six Flags Discovery Kingdom), for those too lazy to check the article.

[cache.rcdb.com image 640x512]

Verbolten (BG Williamsburg)

[cache.rcdb.com image 600x766]

X-Flight (Six Flags Great America)

As an enthusiast and frequent visitor to Hershey Park I am looking forward to this.

Pretty much just once, not counting the "shuttle" action to warm up the launch, so to speak. With these kind of rides, I'm much more concerned with capacity issues... they work quite well for smaller parks, but this is Six Flags we're talking here.

There's a reason it's so short.... look at the rendering and see if you can figure out what essential coaster feature is missing.

Figured it out yet?

There's no pre-launch climb. The Superman ride launches out of the gatehouse. It's actually a fairly unique ride in that regard. I'm guessing the acceleration required to get it out of that little gatehouse fast enough to make that vertical is pretty impressive.

Well, hell, that's lame. I could have sworn it was a launch system they were touting when I was there this summer. This just sucks.

So? It's still lame if that is all to the ride. 7-10 seconds max.

The only roller coaster that I've been on that was both exhilarating and made me feel like my head was going to get chopped off was El Toro at Six Flags Great Adventure.

Everything else I've been on was pretty meh.

Well, it looks like it has to use magnetic propulsion, because you go pretty much straight up at the beginning... then you slowly go across the top... I guess it's supposed to make you feel like you're superman flying (although being strapped into a chair may somewhat limit that feeling)...

It's probably pretty wild for all of 2 seconds...

What the hell is a "Wing Coaster?"

Like, I get the word "Wing" and I get the word "Coaster." But is it just a coaster where the cars have "wings?" If so, I don't get the point. Will the "wings" contribute anything to the experience beyond "I'm in a car with wings?"

Relevant. Basically you sit just outside the basic track parameters.

There isn't really much "figuring out" to do. It's fairly obvious, if that is the whole coaster, which apparently it is.

It sounds like a complete gimmick. A fast launch followed by a damp squib is still a damp squib overall.

One-trick-pony coasters are usually a waste of time. To whit, the Ferrari coaster in Abu Dhabi, whose gimmick is "world's fastest", with a top speed of 150mph. Shame about the utterly boring layout.

I live very close to this park. They specialize in exceptionally short coasters, with exceptionally long lines. I havnt seen this one yet, but I'd be willing to bet that is the whole thing. They have another ride that is just a double loop, you go forward once, then backward once and you are done.

Cedar Fair (owners after the Paramount deal) never seemed to care too much about California's Great America; they sold it off a couple of months ago to these guys (and, curiously, the San Fran 49'ers); hopefully improvements will follow.

The Manta ride at SeaWorld San Diego is almost an exact copy of the same coaster at SeaWorld Orlando. With that being said, it is a great ride.

Here in 2011, it can be viewed as "lame." But 35 years ago when it first opened (1977), it was the first to do a loop both forwards and backwards, creating much pants-shiatting terror.

I'll bet in another 35 years, we'll be yawning at Millennium Force and Apollo's Chariot because they don't go 400 MPH at a sub-orbital height.

No shiat. Last time I was there, the place was filthy, unpainted, and they'd removed Invertigo. I think they only bought the park to steal rides from it.

Thank goodness they left Top Gun or whatever it's called now.

I've been looking for a good reason to go to Great America for a while now, as Raging Bull and Superman started to get tame for my tastes. I looked at the render of X-Flight's keyhole, and let out a nervous chuckle.

I'm so riding that on opening day.

FTA: Skyrush: The 12th coaster at Hersheypark will also be the park's longest, tallest and fastest, rising 200 feet, plunging down an 85-degree first drop and hitting speeds of 75 miles per hour. For an even more heart-pounding experience, grab one of the outer seats on the four-across trains: Unlike the inner two, they're floorless so there's nothing between you and the ground.

Eep.

Cheetah Hunt at Busch Gardens Tampa is like this. Very slick ride. It is also longer...something like three or four launches. So it's a little longer than Superman...which is nice.
