wasn't the first Expendables awful?

I was all prepared for outrage, but then I read the article.

The first movie actually did well enough to warrant a sequel?

I found it supremely meh. It could have been a fun call-back to old school action flix, but the movie was sort of filled with wasted potential.

Oh come on, that scene with Randy Couture talking about his cauliflower ears was pure comedy gold.

I cracked up at the "Because I'm smaller" scene with Barney and Yin-Yang
The scene with Terry Crews and the AA-12 rocked too

I like bats a lot more than I like a bunch of self-absorbed, middle-aged movie twunts on a vanity project.

I thought it was meh too, but watchable. Hoping Arnie has a bigger role in part 2, but I'm really looking forward to see Chuck Norris. They really need to poke more at the genre and themselves. And why the hell no Carl Weathers?

My favorite review of it said that it could have been a deconstruction of the late 80s super-macho action hero genre with all the aging heros, but it wasn't. It isn't some ironic self-aware re-examination of bad 80s action movies, it is a bad 80s action movie.

This is like a joke that's gone on too long. First film elicited a, "Heh. That's funny." Now it's getting sad.

Which was the entire point.

redmond24: My God what a bunch of prudes you guys are. Is this what married life does to you?

No. I was smart enough to spot people milking dumb frat kids and thirteen year old boys for easy money long before I got married.

Keywork99: Which was the entire point.

If I wanted to watch shiatty 80s action movies I'd reup my Netflix subscription and watch them from when the stars didn't look like a bunch of hairy potato sacks.

I don't know . . . I thought it was one of the funniest films I had seen in a long time. I laughed and laughed.

Other than the (seemingly required) Stratham-fights-a-bunch-of-people-in-an-odd-place scene, I thought the whole thing was one long in-joke.

Worth it for the Jet Li vs Dolph Lundgren fight.

\\there is silly

Yes I am sure while you are at your weekly book club discussion group (let me guess this week is Jane Austen?) you will probably make this a huge topic to cry about. But for everyone else it is just an action movie with older action stars where there is sometimes corny / funny / unrealistic mindless ... ACTION. And I guesss if you don't like you don't have to go.
// Let me guess ..Out of Africa was the last movie you liked AND of course you don't own a TV!

You Have Cynicism. (new window)

But South Park is probably too low brow for you huh?

I actually majored in English and funny enough I actually read a couple Jane Austen novels which the guy above me mentioned. I've read most of the pretentious novels and read/watched a bunch of Oscar Wilde style stuff. Importance of Being Earnest I actually find funny.

But if you can't sit back and watch an action flick without being a prude about it, something is wrong with you.

So what if the demographics for action flicks like Expendables include teenagers? Are you that afraid of being placed into a box of category that you convince yourself it sucks?

If that scene with Terry (Christmas) coming out of nowhere with his shotgun didn't get you excited then hand over your man card.

Expendables just wasn't that good of a movie. It had a great potential, and hideous execution.

Nope, my wife liked it. But then, I did not choose poorly like so many others have.

I thought it was a fun movie. Not great, but not bad. Plan on watching it again sometime in the future.

WTF is wrong with some of you people? "The Expendables" was awful. A laughable waste of time and (some) talent. Jet Li was sleepwalking through that crap, and Mickey Rourke had the only good scene in the whole mess. You could have programmed a RealDoll to deliver crappy one-liners with more comedic timing than Stallone. To top it off, I have only three words to say: face-painting dictator.

Don't try to pawn this travesty off on the lesser standards of action flicks. They may be lesser, but there are still standards.

Honestly, someone could slip you a dog turd on a hotdog bun and you'd be all like, "Whassamatter, Jane Austen, too good for mystery meat?" OM-NOM-NOM.

redmond24: But South Park is probably too low brow for you huh?

No, but it's not funny. Got any relevant Robot Chicken clips?

redmond24: read a couple Jane Austen novels

I read Pride and Prejudice. It was boring. Has nothing on Silas Marner though.

redmond24: But if you can't sit back and watch an action flick without being a prude about it

Who said that? I mean, besides you...

redmond24: Are you that afraid of being placed into a box of category that you convince yourself it sucks?

No, I'm afraid I'll waste another 2 hours watching another mediocre movie in which the only interesting bit is over once all the names are listed off at the beginning of the movie.

You can cluck and strut about your degree and how smart you think you are all you want, Expendables just wasn't a very good movie and the sequel isn't going to be any better.

Like I said, if I wanted to watch a shiatty action movie starring some shriveled up schmuck from the 80s I'd watch a shiatty action movie from the 80s. If I wanted to watch a good action movie, I'd watch Die Hard or T2 or The Professional or Inglourius Basterds or Predator or Aliens or Battle Royale....

Point being, there's a lot better examples out there. A LOT better.

From the things I have heard, over the last 5 or 6 years, Apollo reaaaaally pissed Stallone off and burnt that bridge into the mud. Dunno exactly the details, but I think he also has issues with the Governator as well.

What a bunch of pathetic, half-chinned Eberts in here. The WHOLE point of the movie was to make fun of and embrace what the 80's action movies were about. The plot sucked? No farking shiat... all 80's movie plots did. The acting wasn't great? No farking shiat... watch the source material again.

You morons could get a biatchin' 1985 Mustang GT and complain that it doesn't have cup holders, blue tooth AND isn't really as fast as you thought it would be. No farking shiat... it's a nostalgia movie for those of us that grew up during that time.

fark! None of us ever stated that Rocky 4 was cinematic art, but it was fun at the time for what it was. I'm sure the Harry Potter remake 15 years from now will thrill you to no end while the current generation won't get it.
