I had to run the headline through my ROT-26 uncrypter to figure out what it was saying.

Arkanaut: I hear they're interested in buying up Qwghlm too.

As a former SIGINT weenie, and a bit of a student of the history of both WWII SIGINT and the Ubootwaffe, that book sucked long and hard. I call it "The Craptonomicon".

Do you mean the general messiness of the plot, or the actual discussions of cryptography in it?

Yes.

I love reading good books over and over. My copy of "The Codebreakers" by David Kahn is falling apart from use. I read The Craptonomicon once. The characters were idiotic, as was renaming things (like Purple to "Indigo"), or coming up with non-existent stuff (the aforementioned Qwghlm, for example). And the u-boat stuff was just as bad.

Perhaps I have such a dismal view of the book because I know the true story of what went on, and I actually have experience in the field. Like how actual fighter pilots laugh at crap like Iron Eagles, but some of those who don't find it exciting.

You'll have to decode my post to find out. Or not.

OK, so it's been 5 hours, and none of you really smart people out there has posted the plaintext of my message above?

I mean, here are the Enigma settings for it, straight out of my profile:

My current cipher settings
Wehrmacht Enigma (5 letter groups):
B III V IV 20 08 13 AT BE CJ FW GQ HI KU LZ NO PV

And a simple Google of "Enigma machine procedure" brings up this page as the first link.

Googling your current settings brings up an amusing result, given your previously stated opinions on Cryptonomicon :)

Yeah, that's not me. Someone else is using my settings, probably because they saw them on Fark. I generated those settings a *LONG* time ago, at least 4 years ago now. Certainly predating that post.

To reiterate: That book sucks.

Now where would be the fun in saving everybody else the work? The only online emulator I found that supports all the settings is a bit of a PITA, but learning the procedure was kinda cool. You could have picked a more unique side note, though; it's hard to tell who's read your message and who's just jerking a knee at a crypto headline.

Also, I've been trying to figure out the headline. The usual trivial ciphers haven't turned up anything sensible. I'm probably being dumb about something.
