Wanna win an Oscar?

Make your setting during any time period but the present

Have your lead actor or actress put on a phoney foreign accent

Have your lead play a mentally ill person

Make your movie in a foreign country

Why not? Kind of a crappy field of possible nominees so far, and now with the bigger Best Picture category, they usually throw in one or two "non-traditional" nominations.

This was pretty good, except for the last 15 minutes or so... Drive is better in my opinion.

You forgot Nazis. Every Oscar nominated movie needs at least a Nazi or 4.

bighasbeen: Bridesmaids was funny but it seriously lagged in the middle.

Wife just rented it. It was one of the stronger comedies from this year (I'm a H&K mark) but it did have a couple of bumpy slow points. Also, if a comedy says Vegas and never goes, it never gets to Oscar material.

Yeah, oh God that movie was completely awful I mean what about that scene where - *savagely beats Rubber Biscuit to death*

Eh, I thought that was a smart move. Actually going to Vegas would have just made it a Hangover clone.

I'm going to sidle in here and throw my hat in for Drive. Best movie I've seen this year.

I just watched it last night... what the fark is wrong with you people? That movie was terrible... and clearly in the running for the most overrated movie of all time.

bighasbeen: Bridesmaids was funny but it seriously lagged in the middle.

I enjoyed it too. To me, it seems that everything that Apatow and that whole crew is involved with could stand to have10-15 minutes cut, and it would vastly improve the end product.

Pappas: I just watched it last night... what the fark is wrong with you people? That movie was terrible... and clearly in the running for the most overrated movie of all time.

I'm with you. The only person I liked was the cop. Well him and the fat chick for the 10 seconds she was slapping the lead chicklet.

All of the "funny" parts felt extremely contrived.

2011-11-15 11:23:11 PM
If you're going to give it to a comedy, "Crazy, Stupid, Love" is the funniest movie of the year. Since we all know that a comedy will never win, I'd have to go with "Moneyball" as the best picture of the year so far. I would have said "Martha Marcy May Marlene", but it hasn't had enough exposure to even be considered.

Bravo sir, bravo

So close on its chances but, January Jones didn't do a topless scene in that movie which would have nailed it.

Tree of Life was a beautiful film, sorry. I'm not used to seeing any Special FX in a Malick film, but he worked it in seamlessly here. Using the images from the Hubble was pretty damn good too. Visually speaking, the movie was stunning. The acting was phenomenal and in particular Jessica Chastain. Where the hell did she come from? If she doesn't get a supporting nod, I'd be disappointed. This was by far Pitt's best film. The one thing I can say about Pitt is that in any movie he has ever been in, you know it's Brad Pitt. This movie was different. He wasn't a big screen actor in my eyes. He was just an important piece of the story. Mostly though, the cinematography was farking brilliant. Lubezki, I'm sure with Malick's direction, was amazing. There wasn't a shot in the film that didn't matter and nothing was wasted.

The Tree of Life was pretentious shiat.

/A couple of chuckles

///Have a thing for Kristen Wigg though

Crazy, Stupid, Love was the best movie I saw this year. It was clever, funny, and warm without being sappy. And the twist was actually a surprise.

2011-11-16 12:40:43 AM
I just watched Friends with Benefits two nights ago, and it had the most funny one-liners of any film this year, although it had a mind-blowingly stupid premise and was kind of uneven throughout. The parody romcom that was playing on tv constantly starring Jason Segel and (I think) Rashida Jones was brilliantly campy.

As for good dramas:
1.) In b4 One Night in Paris
2.) Still need to see Drive

Boudyro: I'm with you. The only person I liked was the cop. Well him and the fat chick for the 10 seconds she was slapping the lead chicklet.

Oh god, I thought every scene with the fat chick was stupid. The whole indigestion part was simply not funny. And why did the cop have an inexplicably English accent (it might not have been English, my memory fails me)? He was cool though.

ThisNameSux: If you're going to give it to a comedy, "Crazy, Stupid, Love" is the funniest movie of the year.

The ending was pretty funny. Bonus extra Kevin Bacon shenanigans. But then there were those hilariously sad attempts to make Steve Carrell sexy, somehow. I guess that was sort of the point, but it was still contrived.

raccoon2k: I'm going to sidle in here and throw my hat in for Drive. Best movie I've seen this year.

Absolutely. Gosling and Brooks deserve Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectively.

2011-11-16 12:43:58 AM
Oh yeah, "The Help" was pretty damn good too.

2011-11-16 12:45:32 AM
Yes! I hope a comedy breaks through soon and wins Best Picture.

And I hope that comedy is 50/50

Bridesmaids was good. It was not Oscar good. It wasn't even Golden Globes good. Since the bar was so low, people acted like it was better than it was.

50/50 deserves at least a nomination. So farking there.

What else would you expect from a Terence Malick film?

Apos: What else would you expect from a Terence Malick film?

I like most of his films and think that TTRL is one of the best films ever made but TOL just didn't do anything for me. I'm convinced that only movie snobs like it.

Bridesmaids was total shiat. Completely underwhelming and mostly unfunny. One of the most overrated films I've seen based on critic reviews.

Definitely renting Crazy, Stupid, Love as soon as it's on Redbox. Also I definitely want to see Martha Marcy May Marlene, hopefully it's put on Redbox at some point. Don't really want to go into Boston and pay $15 to see a movie.

The elliptical editing is the very core of the film...and basically every Malick film. Honestly, with that style of cutting it the entire film would fall apart, from the performance of the kids (they'd just do a jump cut every time the kids, or anyone else's performance wasn't "on") to the ideas that Malick was trying to convey.

2011-11-16 01:06:39 AM
Drive is also my pick for best of the year thus far. So farking good.

2011-11-16 01:12:16 AM
On another note, I want to know how Tree of Life could be pretentious when it's pretty farking clear that the director couldn't give a flying fark what general public thinks about him, to the point that he hasn't made a public apparence in the 40 or so years of his career.

Let's not fool ourselves: The Best Picture will go to *drum roll* Clooney's The Descendants in lieu of the far superior The Ides Of March .

The Descendants
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
War Horse

I'm probably missing one or two.

Not really sure how Malick comes off as pretentious since the only people saying how great Terrance Malick is are people who aren't Terrence Malick. Hell, A-list actors show up at his door to audition and maybe end up in a cut scene, for which they get paid nothing.

He's an arthouse director, but he's more reclusive than pretentious.

Because hes Irish. If you liked him in that, check out The IT Crowd, its what Big Bang Theory would be if it were good. But yeah, that bugged me too, she does mention in the movie that she didnt know a non-citizen could be a cop or something like that, but it seemed like he was trying to do an american accent but failing badly the entire movie. Maybe that was the case and she ad libbed that line?
