Sometimes I feel like I was the only one that burned half an adolescence on MechWarrior and MechCommander.

/Mad Cat cheats were glorious
//6-hour standoffs on MechCommander were not...two dudes with 12 Masakaris each lined up on a hilltop, nobody willing to move...stupid. And that was how we spent our time.

2011-11-15 03:57:15 PM
I'm sorry, but unless you add some more heatsinks and LRM ports, it'll be nothing but DFA fodder

Bah. Scout mechs can suck it. Hovercraft for the win!

2011-11-15 03:58:24 PM
Thirty years from now, as you huddle in the basement of your bombed out suburban ranch home, and you hear the mechanized whirring of the approaching killbots, you'll think back on this moment and say "I really should have gone Sarah Connor on those robot scientists when I had the chance."

Meh. 50 MPH is only a 5/8 movement profile assuming that's the top speed.

A fast 'Mech is more like a 9/12 or an 11/17 profile.

Looks like it could only mount a single small laser at best. That sucks. Might be good for NARC tagging, though.

Know what'd be really cool? If instead of investing so much money in things primarily geared for warfare with marginal side benefits for the rest of society, we would instead invest that money in things primarily geared for the benefit of the rest of society with a marginal side benefit for warfare.

That'd be pretty cool.

If you have a rocket launcher in the bathroom that the former tenant left, it shouldn't be a problem.

Meh. When they cook up an Atlas, I'll be impressed.

Maybe they can design one that doesn't produce so much waste heat.

Typo + Fark = no edit button

Still 50 MPH is slow in 'Mech terms.

Scrotastic Method: Sometimes I feel like I was the only one that burned half an adolescence on MechWarrior and MechCommander.

You don't even want to know.

/Spent huge chunks of my pay as a young adult visiting Virtual World's battletech centers and flying tons of sorties. I was two away from my veteran pin before the local center got sold and moved to another city :(

jido-genshi.com

Those buttons, they all do something. Those screens, they all mean something. Coolant loop routing, ammo jettisoning, weapon trigger links, weapon seek levels, coolant flush etc.

getinthepods.com

/would pick it back up in a second if there were a center nearby. Hell, if I had the space and the internet bandwidth to support it, I'd build a tesla pod in my house somewhere.
Get in the pod, shut the door

I don't think you need to worry about any kill-bot based on a bird that exists almost exclusively because it runs away.
If you know where it's going (say, because it's pursuing you) it'd be fairly easy to topple and fairly slow to get up.
This has gotta be a scout thing.

What you really want *for a kill bot*, are spider-legs.
Resistant to trapping/snaring, flexible for climbing/jumping/navigating uneven ground, and with built-in redundancy to weather damage.

I can't be the only Farker who noted there were definite break points with respect to Mech weight and speed.

I know I've forgotten some, but the ones I exploited most often were:

50 tons x 6; this was kinda pushing it, as the 300 class engine weighed a lot and limited your weapons loadout. However, this was fast enough to outrun heavy Mechs that could outgun it, while powerful enough to really hurt light Mechs that could match its speed.

55 tons x 5; at 55 tons, jump jets were half a ton each, vs a full ton above that weight

75 tons x 4; above this weight, the engine weighed too much to make movement speed more than 3 hexes impractical

Most annoying light Mech I ever made? 20 tons x 8 (IIRC), jump jets, and no weapons --- just a TAG unit to paint the target for a devasting Arrow IV bombardment, or a C3 slave unit.

Battletech Ref FTW, holy sh*t Mechwarriro MMORPG!!!!!

2011-11-15 04:22:17 PM
Ah yes, where wars will be fought around open areas of water to improve the efficiency of heat sinks, and 100 ton mechs can actually walk on the earth without sinking down to their knee-equivalents

/robotech is better

The Atlas packed a punch and had great armor, but the waste heat and slow speed where bummers, I preferred marauder.
